    Magic gear question

Okay so while i love my monocog i am going to pick up a '06 giant rincon(recon?) this evening that has been converted to ss. My question is how reliable is the magic gear set up? I have a spare tensioner laying on my table from another build i am working on, should i put it on just for a bit of extra stability? The owner said it is a 42:19 and i know that if i change it much i will have to get a tensioner. Thanks for the help.

As a former wrench I ****ing hate the "magic gear". Seems like you always either need a brand new chain or a worn out one to get it right. I would rather be able to adjust it to my liking so I would purposely not use the magic gear and use the tensioner.

That said I'm sure a lot of people have great results using it.

I rode it around the house when i got it home and the ratio is a tad low for around here i think but i am going to slap the tensioner on it and try to be safe.

Nothing wrong with a tensioner at all. It works just fine. Personally, I think the bike looks cleaner without it.

What I've done in the past is filed down the inside of the drop out so that the axle had just a few extra millimeters to slide back. This completely solved all my tensioning problems without the need of a tensioner.

Plus, unless you get really, really lucky the gear you have to run will be a compromise. O.K. I'll shut up now.

*Theoretically*, as long as you keep the same number of total teeth, you should be OK, but yeah we can assume the chain you are using is stretched/broken in so you'll need to forever use chains with equal stretch which has it own bag of issues.

Andy, I live in western TN our longest climbs are a few hundred feet at a medium grade. We have alot more of the 15' high creek bed walls but those you can bomb down one side and fly up the other. That and i'm just a tad twisted in the head so i like to make it a challenge

Yes, sorry, - I tend to forget that not everyone has the same sort of terrain and that they're not all old and feeble like me!

FROM MY EXPERIENCE, you don't need a tensioner if the chain is tight; however, when you need to replace it, the new chain will be too tight. My GT has a "magic ratio" of 32:20 (sorry, I'm old and weak in CA), and I run 32:19 with a tensioner when I replace the chain, then after a few rides throw the 20 cog on. This lasts until the chain is worn.
