I have an extra KMC X9SL chain that was given to me and I'm wondering if it's strong enough for my SS. It's 3/32" and was used on a BMX race bike. It would be nice to shed a little weight there, but if these are too delicate or will stretch or whatever - then I won't bother.
If it fits onto your chainring & cog, it'll be fine. Geared drivetrains suffer at least as much stress as singlespeed drivetrains, contrary to whatever else you may have heard.
I am using the KMC superlight bmx, hollow pin, machined out plates gold chain on my chain S.S. and works great. One of the guys I sometimes ride with that works at my LBS is terribly hard on chains on his DJ and has never broken one. Swears by them.

I'd imagine there is far more stress placed on a geared chain in cross shift at say 300W than a single speed where the chainline is straight at 300W.
I bought one for $35 on chainlove not long ago anticipating using it for when I need to add gears to the SS, but I thought about whether I should use it on the SS, so this is helpful! I think I will still save it for the geared application as I have a brand new SRAM PC850 on there now.

That XTR crank looks sweet, gsxrawd!
But I have to ask - where do you guys find that X9SL in 3/32" width? All I've seen is 1/8", which makes sense as this is supposed to be a 9-speed chain...

Arek
The x9sl is an 11/128" (9-spd) chain. It is only available in this width.
(1/8" = 16/128")

Umm.. That's what I said above? I think.
The point was, it was the OP who said it was 3/32" in his first post - which I questioned.
I'd love to go weight-weenie on my 3/32" chain... Or maybe I'm looking for trouble where there currently arent any - have been running trusty Z610 HX chains exclusively since I started SS-ing.

Guess I was confused. Thot you were saying the x9sl was a 1/8" chain. My bad... sorry.
Can the X9SL hollowpins be added and removed on these chains, without affecting the strength integrity? I have the gold chain and you can easily spot the pins that were removed or added, since the color came off and the mushroomed ends deformed a little from getting pushed through.
Also, I got 3/32" from KMC X9SL Chain at Danscomp where I bought it from. I guess 3/32 is actually 12/128" instead of 11/128".

I wouldn't run a chain on a SS that's been put back together with a chain tool, but I value my "parts".
