New question here. I need SS wheelset advice

I'm looking for a solid wheelset to be used on a new SS. Challenge - I need it on the cheap.

    Some options I've seen:
    WTB Laser disc
Several online shops sell Mavic 317 or 517 with XT's for about $200

    Any other ideas?

What happened to the Bling-Bling wheels?

The trouble with common sense is it is no longer common

You could build up some Surly hubs with Rynolites

If you have any intentions of dual use (SS/geared) go with the XT hubs and spacers for SS. If SS only, Surly disc hubs. I prefer DT 14/15 spokes - maybe Revos in the front. I'd go with Mavic 517 rims - you can run them setup as discs or rim brakes - not as pretty as the all black disc rims, but more versatile.

    My cheepset:

    E-bay rims 521 front and a 217 rear ($70)
St gauge dt champion spokes ($35)
E-bay LX non disc front ($5)
    Surly rear hub ($45)

Only way to do it cheaper would be to grab a set of machine builts from whoever has the best online blowout price and convert it with a gusset kit (think pricepoint, jenson, cbo). I was shooting for a durable SS specific setup for v-brakes. V-brakes stuff are about the best deals now since most are going disc. I could have saved $20-30 by going with a set of Sun rims, but the mavic quality is so much nicer to build up.

Have you gone on Webcyclery and used mean-Todd's wheel build calculator? This could give you an idea on cost and options...

I'll be sniffing around Ebay and some of the other ideas. I may just use my existing King disc wheelset and just remove the cassette when I ride SS - that way I stay focused on getting a nice wheelset as $$ permits. Anyone do this?
