I've been having a blast on my Zion 737 EBB for a while now, but I broke my ankle pretty good in March.
So now I can't put out the watts to push a SS. Huge amounts of pain standing to pedal. Is there a cheap way to get some gears on this frame, or should I stick to the road bike till I get back to 100%?
agree with dekes on the 1x9, easier way to go to get gears and you can keep your crank set up. If you have an 8/9 speed hub you are all set there. then find a short or med. cage rear mech, cassette, 9spd chain, shifter and cables. universal cycles sells rear only shifters also i think. ebay and classifieds would be a good way to go also.
road miles would not be a bad idea either. good way to rebuild all the stuff in your bum wheel
good luck and heal/rebuild fast! then you can get rid of the gears again!
Why do you suggest a short or med der. instead of a long cage? Seriously, I don't know which to get and was just gonna get a long cage. That's what is on my FS 26er.
if you are going 1x9 you don't need the long cage. your chain can be shorter and the tension will be better. less chain bouncing around, less chain suck etc. all the DH, FR, DJ guys that run 1 or 2 by 9 use the short or med.
deciding between short and medium depends on what range of gear inches you will have. if you are going with say a 32t ring and smaller range of gears in the back you can get away with a short cage. if you go 32t front and a max of 32 or 34t on the cassette you would want a med. cage. (someone correct me if im wrong, i think this is how you would choose)
I've heard some talk of getting gears onto a dedicated SS frame by going with a Hone rear hub and derailleur. I'm not sure how cheap that would be, but it should work.

I (and others) have had success using an Ultegra rear derailler in a 1x9 configuration. I also use an N-Gear chain watcher and a Spot Chain guard on my 1x9. Works great!
I think the road bike would help you the most. It would put the least stress on your body, compared to a mtb. Either way, hope your recovery goes good.
