Fork for my bianchi b.u.S.S. ???

After years of going rigid I'm thinking about getting a fork, something to soften up all the roots and rocks in my area, problem is I don't really know a lot about them.
I know that I don't want to spend more money than what my bike cost though
Whats the most travel I can have without screwing up the handling? And do they even make mounts for V brakes on forks anymore? I mostly just see disc brakes now.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Look for a used Fox F80X Terralogic with the V brake mounts pre-2007. 80mm travel to stay in line with the BUSS geometry. Should be $200'ish for the earlier models, though I have seen the disc specifics '06 and '07 going for as high as $400 used.
