experimenting with SS chain tension with derailleur?

playing around with my bike and ive shortened the chain quite a bit but there seems to still be quite a bit of slack. im just using the stock derailleur as a tensioner for now. how short should i make the chain to get the right tension?

i didnt modify the derailleur in any way other then adjusting the b screw.the chain still wraps through it the regular way. is this the correct way of doing it?

I go as short as possible but not too tight, just give a little space for the chain to stretch.

Give a little bit space for the spring to work a little bit since chain has tight spot so the tension is not fixed.
