    bashguard?

I have never used one, but the other day I realized that my steel surly chainring is actually slightly bent... I was surprised. But I am glad it is steel so I can bend it back, anywho, who out there uses a bashguard and what do you look for in one?

It's the Surly ring; very bendy.
With 5 bolt rings I don't run a bashguard. With 4 bolt I look for something thick and burly. On my XT cranks I have a Salsa Trials bashguard.

I have bashrings on my bikes. I don't bash them too often but they have some scratches or dings from tall rocks or something. Apparently, it might not be a bad idea to reinforce a 4 bolt crankset either and a bashring seems to do that adequately.

I just want a bashring that is not much bigger than it needs to be. One of mine is a leftover that the LBS had. Another is a Blackspire that they swapped on my crankset in exchange for the LX rings.

I don't run one. The chain will protect the ring in 99% of the situations. The Surly rings do tend to bend though.
