    Another Vulture Flies (Finally!)

So we finally got this Vulture out on the trails and a little tiny bit muddy. My friend Paul (loooong time lurker) and I ordered Vultures over two years ago. Unfortunately, as soon as Paul had all the bits to put his together, he herniated a few discs in the lower back and was off the bikes for a very long time. After a year and a half of pestering and badgering, we finally had him back on the local bike path riding his Surly fixie to the Redhook Brewery and back. Nothing like the promise of a few pints of hand-pulled cask beer to serve as an effective motivator. After a few weeks of that, we decided that the time had come to make the Vulture taste mud. I do not think he'll make it to HarmCon this year, but we're going to make him to promise to come to Fall Barbie Camp.
Here's a few pictures of the Vulture, probably holding the record for the longest time between delivery and first ride.

It is a very interesting color, sometimes it looks light blue, sometimes it looks like a pale seafoam green depending on the light
    The build is as follows:
PlanetX Knifen Fork (almost as heavy as my sussy fork!)
    Blue CK disc hubs F/R
    Mavic D521 Rims
    Gazzi 3.0 F, 2.6 R
    Profile 180 Cranks w/ti spindle
    34:19 (King Kog)
Avid Mech Discs with Paul's purple levers
    CK blue Headset
    Race Face 27" bars
    Fizik Blue saddle
    Thompson post
Random flats (probably replaced with Time ATACs soon)

The stem is temporary, it will be modified as his flexibility improves. I think he has a Thompson somewhere in the parts bin waiting to go on.

    Dang! That thing is sweet!
I can't get over how awesome those Vulture rear-ends look!

What I can't understand though, is why many of the Oregonians use the 8lb DH tires when the soil up there is already filled with tacky-goodness?!?!

    Jeez!!!

    That thing is AWESOME!

Could use some Vulture decals, tho...

Why not spring Barbie Camp? There's plenty of campfire stirring to be done while everybody else is out on the bike during the day. For that matter, there's plenty of mild riding available around camp. Shouldn't hurt anybody's back. (Take it from a guy with a bulged disc -- L5/S1.)

You're going to be there in spring, aren't you Kyle?

    Spring, Eh?

Well, now that I am working part time, I might just be able to make spring Barbie camp. Paul really was ready to go to fall last year, but his work reared its ugly head and he could not get away at the last minute. Spring all depends on scheduling. What are the days again?

PS Sparty-Where's the pictures of the new paint job on the vulture? My powdercoat has begun some small flaking and it might be time to send it back to the nest for some of Derrick's magic.

    Awesome!

I'll bet that rides sweet! It needs a 7" rotor for the front though...

I picked her up last Saturday. She got in front of the camera this evening (professional photographer). I'll get a CD with the photos on it sometime soon -- will post 'em later.

I wanted new paint on my baby because her powdercoat was scratched in places and had begun inviting moisture between the finish and the tubes. I could see blisters forming under the finish in places -- AKA rust. Paint bonds to steel better than powdercoat does so I knew it was time to get the frame back to Derrick for a new finish. He did a great job, albeit understated compared to some of the flamboyant paint jobs I've seen coming out of Vulture's paint booth lately. That's okay, I got exactly what I wanted. You'll see soon.

It's about time! Both for getting Paul back on the trail and for you posting the photos

    Wasn't my call

He's a fellow rider (SSconny) and I didn't commission the job -- Vulture did (for their website). If'n it'd been up to me, I'da just shot 'em with my lil' Canon A80...

    (I ain't THAT obssessed.)

    Nice Vulture!

Love the color. Sorry Paul can't make it to HarmCon -- it's shaping up to be a serious VultuReunion.

Does it count as a reunion if I just got my bike? Talked to Derrick yesterday -- mine's getting drawn up in the next couple of days, should start getting built this weekend. Another week or so after that before my fork arrives, and I'll be a proud new Vulture owner myself.

No, it ain't no reunion. Think of it more like a flesh-tearing VultureFest.

You have a keen eye Bob. That is indeed the QFC parking lot, unoffical entry point for St. Eds and Big Finn Hill

Ha thats pretty funny. I used to like riding those trails. I remember they were like a rollercoaster! Used to live in Kirkland so I got to ride up that long hill to the trailhead! Boy I sure miss that fish place named spuds....

    Lurking Vultures ;-)

Well, I built the bike to be indestructable, unfortunately the body was not...

Still getting my off-road legs back, but the ride is very nice. With that 3.0 Gazzi front and Gazzi Jr. rear, I think I could ride over oiled marbles!
