2003/4/5 Stumpjumper HT... magic ratio? half link?

Just curious if anyone's done a conversion on a 2003 or 04 (or 05 for that matter), Stumpjumper hardtail. I'm doing mine and would like to avoid a tensioner or eccentric hub if at all possible. Don't have the $$$ for the eccentric, and hate Singulators. On my current SS I have 32x18 in horizontal dropouts, and would like to stick to the range of 32x16-32x18, preferably 32x17-ish. Any comments welcome.

Oh and the rest of the build if anyones interested:

Thanks, but a bit "spinny" for me... appreciate the reply though. If I did my math right, and my chainstay is close to factory spec I *should* be able to run 32x16 w/ a half link, I think.
