Rockshox Recon Gold TK service manual calls for 5w / 15w (oil bath/upper legs). I think I've heard of people replacing them with synthetic motor oil instead. Is that better than/on par with say Maxima Fork Oil?
If I get 5W, what would the SAE be? 5W30, 40, 50.... ?
While I think motor oil would be fine, I prefer to use fork oil. I use Maxima fork oil. Any motorcycle shop should have it on hand. It's easy enough to come by and I've used it for years in dirt bikes, motorcycles, and bicycles. There's a reason they want you to use certain weights. Too thick in the damper and it will effectively increase compression. Too thin in the lowers may cause accelerated wear
The upper is the most important. That's where you'll get harshness if the oil is too thick. I'd say grab a bottle of 5wt suspension oil and a bottle of Mobil 1 for the lowers and air side. Same goes for the shock. Use the right stuff in the damper and motor oil for the air side.
