Hi im new to the forums and i just picked up a new mtb after about a 10 year lapse in riding. The bike is a FELT VIRTUE COMP 2012 with some Sektor TK Solo Air forks 130mm, they are not that great but will do for the moment until i get more cash for some decent forks. My question is do these forks take 5w fork oil in the upper air spring top? I know you put in 6ml of 15w suspension oil in the lowers but when i unthreaded the air spring top cap their was no oil in the tube!
Any help on this would be much appreciated.
I unscrewed the whole black top cap the Schrader valve is attached too. heres are some pictures with it removed. I just want to know if i have to put 5w oil in here or not. They are 2012 forks and are brand new and they have no oil in them at the moment
Incidentally, how are you liking those tires? I'm thinking about a set for next season. I mostly ride XC, but with a fair amount of vert and sometimes rain or loose surfaces, so I like a little more than, say, a Maxxis Ikon.
I don't see any mention of putting oil into the inner leg on top of the air spring. Seems like they think grease and an O-ring ought to take care of it.
Mine are Continental x king 26 x 2.4 not sure how they cope with anything at the moment as ive had them less then 24hrs lol. But it says their designed for XC so your guess is as good as mine Continental X-King MTB Tyre | Chain Reaction Cycles Sorry i cant be of more help.
I run Conti Mountain King II 29x2.4's. I just bought a second pair. I absolutely love them. I heard a lot of people complaining about the cheaper non-German made set. My first set was this cheaper, non-protection tires. The only reason I'm getting the new pair is I want to get true tubeless protection, not because the tires were cheap or tore or anything. I've gotten one pinch flat, my own fault for running too little air on a really wet day, and one from running a nail over. Both tubed obviously.
I recommend them highly. Blueskycycling usually has good sales (buy one, get one free), its where I got my first set.
I have a set of the 2.2s. I'm more thinking about what I want to race with next season. I loved my Rocket Rons but lost time dealing with flats and I don't think I can get a puncture resistant version. Tubeless may be too expensive for me for next season. Irritating.
The oil goes in the other leg, the one with the lockout lever.
Unscrew the other top cap and withdraw the rebound/lockout cartridge. Fill the fork leg with SAE 5w suspension oil to 1cm above where the bottom of the cartridge is, when installed in the fork leg.
An easy test for the correct oil level, without dismantling anything, is to try the lockout lever. If it works then you have enough oil. Then let out all the air from the other leg and see if the fork compresses all the way to the end of the travel.
If it won't then there is too much oil in the other fork leg.
BTW the Sektor TK 130 Solo Air is not a bad fork. It can however be improved by fitting the remote lockout kit with MoCo damper cartridge.
Thanks for the info! Was getting the fox forks mixed up with the rockshock as i know you put a bit of oil on top of the airside spring piston on fox forks for lube. I heard these forks can be changed from 130mm to 150mm travel by removing a spacer on the air pistion?
