Typically I ride with the stock saddle that comes on my bike. however, I have read a few web articles about some saddles that are more comfortable than others. I am getting my first fat bike and would like to put a nice saddle on it and eventually put one on my Trek Dual Sport 8.6. (I am guessing my new Fatboy will become my year-round bike.)
I would be interested to know which saddles you like the most and why.
I currently have an old WTB speed V on my Pugsley....works for me. I have been considering a Brooks B17 for my Moots, but I have never spent much on a saddle.
I like Selle Itaila Turbo, and flight models. they fit my ass well and arnt too shabby looking;-) Next saddle I'm getting is one of those new brooks cambium c17 saddles for my fat bike. Like the idea of weatherproofness but still a brooks feel.
First of all, I am a daily commuter. I ride roughly 12-18 miles a day. Currently on a Trek Dual Sport 8.6 but transition to a Fat Bike. I have done some research in the past on these and I still have these questions.
Brooks - The leather may not be good for muddy or rainy conditions. Also, wouldn't I want some gel or comfort for the daily riding?
Selle Italia - I had one of these on my BMX bike but never sat on it so i don't remember.
What are you thoughts of a gel or thicker padded saddle versus the flat and virtually no padding? Why don't you ride with a gel padded saddle? What advantages do the Brooks style seats provide?
"Hammock" suspension, also available e.g. with WTB Speed, some Selle & Fi'zi:k.
I have modified cheap saddles by cutting away polymer shell beneath sit bones.
To me over thick padded saddles are ucky, I pretty much want my sit bones to make contact and nothing else. Soft saddles put to much pressure on the taint and I can't stand thagt. I like the Selle gel max because it's kinda firm but has a little suspension built in underneath. Not the lightest saddle and not for everyone but I like it. Saddles are just so personal. For my xc bike where I am in an out of my saddle more I use a Specialized Phenom.
I like cheap saddles apparently. I have a 9 dollar vader that is actually quite comfortable, and one off a gt something. I wish I knew who made it cause I want another one
I actually love the way my $12 Vader sits as well, too bad they don't last long. On my third one this year (granted, I killed one in a crash). I weigh 240# so I kill cheap stuff.
Another Brooks fan here. However I will say i only like Brooks for certain applications, mostly touring and commuting. I like having a Brooks on my fixie.
I still prefer the Fizik Arione for road bikes. For mountain bikes, just about anything works since I'm out of the saddle often enough out on the trails. I'm currently using a WTB Pure V on my fat bike.
My favorite saddle came to me by chance. When I first started riding my 2013 Specialized Camber Comp I was really enjoying it. One day I realized I had not given the saddle a single thought. It turns out the stock Henge saddle is so comfortable I never noticed I was even sitting on it.
I found the stock Henge on my Camber to be comfortable as well, when I trashed it, I went for a phenom and found it even more comfortable, if more expensive. It's light as well, got em on all my bikes now
I would just stick with the stock saddle. If you can't get it adjusted to make it work, then try some of the models mentioned in this thread. Leather saddles are suitable for winter riding when they are maintained properly with proofhide, or a similar protective cream. Everyone's body type, riding style, and level of experience differ, so my favorite saddle for all-day riding might be the worst saddle that another rider has ever sat upon.
