Looking to replace an old blown Van RC coil on my son's '04 RFX and thinking about going air to save weight. Anyone have experience with an air shock on a hl RFX? What tune would be best if I went with a Monarch? He's a featherweight (< 100lbs)...
I had bad results with them, but they've come a long way. What I'd say is make sure it's tuned for him (send to Avalanche, Push). 100lbs is way off what the stock damping is intended to handle, so it's going to be a harsh ride, even if the sag is set right. One of the issues I had with air shocks (RP3, RP23) was the excessive compression damping because they were intended for XC bikes, course the DHX Air totally went the other direction with crazy diving and wallow. I'd say pick up an older fox air shock and send it to Push/Avalanche. That's really the only way it's going to work well IMO, otherwise it's going to come with a shim stack intended so 250lb riders don't blow up the shock, which is way too stiff for someone less than 100lbs.
Don't you love it when everyones suggestions cost more than you paid for the whole bike
Anyway, I think I've shown that the Monarch can handle seeing as I've got almost two years now beating the crap out of that thing. Jayem information is a bit dated, the Monarch is available with a variety of factory tunes and a low compression tune would be good for trail riding and the medium would still be fine for all the jumping he does. $215 for a 2015 Monarch R is the best value new shock out there. You have probably also noticed that PUSH no longer lists RS rear shock service.
