I own a Trek X-Caliber 8 and I was wondering what the maximum tire size you could put on it. I have it mounted on 29x2.2 for now but whats the max? Is it possible to mount it with 2.5 or something similar. And also if I upgrade the front derailleur to one that doesn't have its mount to the back of the frame close to the rear tire would I be able to gain clearance? If so what front derailleur do you recommand?
Thank you loads of questions, but rather asking everything at once and spam 20 different posts.
I honestly don't know the maximum tire size you can put on an Xcal 8. . . but I will say if you do put a bigger tire on it check to make sure the tire clears the front derailleur when it is in the small chainring position before you go on a ride. The front derailleur gets closer to the tire as you shift to the smallest cog. If you do put a bigger tire on it and the front derailleur happens to hit the tire while you're riding you might cause some damage. Just a thought.
I just mounted some 2.2s and measured them. Two inches on the nose. They're new, but still...
OP, eyeball it and see what you think. If a tire is true to size, it'll get wider by half the difference on each side and a little more than that in height. You can usually find discussion of whether specific tires run true to size by googling them.
Whether or not you can change your front derailleur depends on how it's mounted. If it's clamped to your seat tube and your seat tube doesn't change diameter, probably. I could see a water bottle boss getting in the way. Funkier seat tube shapes may limit your options. Also look at clearance between the chain and the back of the derailleur cage and your tire when you're in your granny gear. There are a number of reasons 1x is popular for more AM-oriented bikes.
you have 19mm rims on that bike if i remember right. a 2.2 tire will handle better than a 2.4. you will gain some compliance with a 2.4 but the sidewalls won't have much support and you increase rolling resistance. imo you should move to a 21-23mm rim for 2.4" tires
you could move to a tire that has a tread more suited to your riding environment, what tire do you have now and what type of terrain and weather are you looking to do best in?
so , whats the max size an xcal rear can take...i am willing to throw out the front derailleur!
