Hey everyone, I am going to be riding the Dusk to Dawn race in December. It is my first time doing a 12 hour race. I have ridden the course several times with my 32 x 21 gear ratio. With that gearing everything is super easy to climb but I find myself spinning too much. I'm thinking of going to a 34 x 20 or even a higher gear. However I'm afraid that after six or seven hours, the high gear will really take its toll on my legs. Is it worth it to sacrifice lap speed for the ability to finish the race strong? Any tips?
I have ridden lots of >12 hour days on a SS and you definitely have to take distance into account when choosing a gear. However, for Pemberton, I would think something like 32x18 would be better. However, I'd get out there and try a few ratio's out (all depends on your strength and fitness) 32x21 seems WAY spinny for pemberton.
In my *limited* SS experience, I rode 32 x 18 on a borrowed Surly out there and felt it was good for me. Granted, I did not ride 12 hours. The 20 might be good for the all day session!!
I rode 32x18 out there last week, in prep for D2D and it was still too spinny. I will probably run 34x18 or 32x17 for the race. There is so few hills you really shouldn't have to worry about a harder gear burning you out.
FYI, the Pemberton trail was re-routed after last year's D2D (no more sandy jeep road climb). DCB's website states that they will be using the same course as last year, but I do not see how this is possible with the trail being re-routed.
44X15??? There is no way I could push that for 10 hours.
