Shift cables are shift cables, but brake cables have different ends for road and mountain. If you are talking about the pre-packaged sets the shift set for road bikes doesn't have enough housing for a MTB unless it's got downtube cable routing, which is getting rare unfortunately.
I really like those DA/XTR cable sets, they give a drivetrain that last bit of refinement that can make all the difference in the world.
Not sure about shifter cables (I ride SS), but for the BB7s you can get a lot better power if you run full length, compressionless cable housings. Something like the Jagwire Ripcords. Just my two cents.
