I've worn out the rear Maxxis Ardent tire on my 2012 Transam 29. What is the biggest rear tire people have been able to run. The reason I'm asking is the SRAM front der doesn't leave much clearance.
I'm looking at the Hans damf 29 and the Specialized Butcher 29 tire.
Highly recommend hans damf, I have a transam 26 that i run with them and it feels like it makes it a 2 inch travel bike with the right pressure. Theyre super fat so i had to offset my front derailler for clearance
If you're having clearance issues with the stock 2.25 Ardent and rear derailleur, you're not going to fit the Hans Dampf in there. It's definitely bigger than the 2.25, more close to the massive 2.4 Ardent.
So, I'm not using a front derailleur, but I had the Specialized Purgatory on mine in 2.4 and it actually fit within the frame, but it rubs on the chainguide when I was cornering to the right. I can imagine it would NOT work if you're running a 2x or 3x setup with a front derailleur. I think with the new 1x drivetrains like XX1 where a chainguide won't be necessary, that will be a huge bonus for the 29'er frame designers.
If anyone's looking for a good and meaty front tire, I'd definitely recommend the Purgatory.
^ Ever run a Maxxis Ardent 2.4/2.25, how's the Spec tires compare in volume and size?
