I rode Smiths Gully yesterday (Saturday) and it was pretty sweet except for a few sections, where I had to walk through some sloppy parts. I was riding a Trance X3, so the 5" applies and it was a 45 minute drive from Brunswick Melbourne. The Smith Gully General Store owners were really helpful with track routes and they have delicious pies for afterwoulds.
Hard to say, I've never been to St Andrews, but it could very well be similar in terms of technicality and amount of uphill/downhill riding. Let us know what its like if you ride it.
I did get down to Melbourne with my beloved bike in one piece (first time boxing it for air travel - think I depleted Officeworks' supply of bubblewrap for the month!).
As expected, YY was still closed as was Lysterfield, so we went to Wombat. It hadn't rained for a week or two, and was a nice sunny day, but nonetheless the track was seriously muddy. As in rear-wheel-spinning-on-any-kind-of-incline muddy, and plenty of nice slidey moments in the corners. Fun. It's a fun track, and you pretty much have to concentrate everywhere because it's always twisting and turning - close to 21kms of pure singletrack is very tasty indeed. In an ideal world (for me), it'd be a bit more technical with some bigger climbs and descents, but you can't have everything.
We underestimated how long it'd take - the mud made things pretty slow - and had to finish the ride in the dark, but it was a great ride.
