I've been riding with my BB7's in the mid teen temp wise all winter and have not had a single issue. Maybe a quick squeek here and there but nothing to ever concern me. Definitely nothing like the horrible viration I got out of my Juicy 3's on another bike that is now swapped over to SLX's...
other than the cables freezing, wont the hydros do the same? the reason I posted this was to compare, there is another thread on this forum with similar issues on Hydro brakes

hydros also get grit in the piston seals and rotors and pads get coated in ice & frozen mud so Im not sure there is any advantage either way. also a sticky piston will make the brakes not stop so well
we rode yesterday and my Shimanos, friends Magura both didnt stop so well, other friends bb7s worked fine.
seems to depend on who get water/mud on them and who doesnt
wish i had a pic but i locked my bike outside of class a few years ago and it was like 0 Fahrenheit and water from the roof of a building was dripping on my bike and when I went out to get it my front brake was completley iced over like the size of a small melon of clear ice on the hub cause it was dripping directly on the hub... rotor was locked up and everything... had to walk my bike home...
tried to do a wheelie the whole way there and ended up breaking 4 spokes when my front wheel hit the ground... this was bb7 by the way... other than that no issues whatsoever
LIke all things mechanical, service and clean them on a regular basis and issues tend to to be minimal, if at all.
I own both BB7 and SLX. I like the BB7s better for service, you can inspect, clean all aspects of the system with basic tools (even on the trail), not to mention stopping power equal to any hydro I have used. Main benefit of hydros is weight.
Ice can freeze around the caliper and prevent movement of the arm to which the cable is anchored to. It can also prevent the return spring from functioning as it should. It could also freeze around cable stops/ends.
