I'm an old school V-brake rider who is gonna buy a new bike pretty soon. No experience with disc brakes so I will have lots of dumb questions. I really enjoy upgrading & customizing my bikes and I will do so with the brakes on the new bike, therefore I need your learn about them...

1) Are there specific M975 calipers for specific rotor sizes or can any M975 caliper run on
a 140 or 160 rotor?

2) Can XTR M975 calipers work on other brand rotors, such as Avid?

Thanks,

1. There are M975 calipers that can run 160front/140rear or 180f/160r. They are both IS mount. I'm not sure about the post mount models.
2. You can usually get them to work with other rotors, but its best to use the same brand because that's what they are designed for.

I've been running the M975s for the last few years and they have been great.
