I got my R1's yesterday. When I spread the brake pads apart with a plastic shim, brake fluid leaks from the top of the master cylinder on both front and rear brakes (picture of location below).
The fluid would leak from one of the 4 holes seen above. Has anyone experienced this before? If you have, what was the solution? I called FormulaBrakeUSA and left a message since they're closed today.
all of them had this leaking issue except the Puro's. It was always going to be fixed in the next batch. What I don't understand is that the same problem that is already present since the K24's is still present in the newer brake models.
The issue with the brake pads rubbing the discs due to lack of space, the discs rubbing the inside of the caliper (especially when one piston is sticky, and the other one tends to tilt the disc a little) is now solved with a new 2013 feature called 'enhanced calliper design' (read : more space between pads and disc and a wider slot in the caliper where the disc fits in). A new flashy term for design flaws? Come on. I already pointed these issues out 4 years ago (since Formula The Ones). Formula makes great brakes when they work, but it seems they don't learn from their mistakes.
I moved to Magura MT6'es, couldn't be happier. The 2013 version of the MT6'es is even better than the 2012, with a firmer bite point.
Yes, mine did and a few others did that. Apparently it happened in the early 2009 batch which has since been fixed. People reportedly sent them to formula and they were fixed. I have yet to do so, but don't anticipate any problems as formula service is top notch.
Same as civil. I just got mine back from Formula USA and they were repaired free of charge. They did change the lever from the Mg lever though to Al. Said some of the Mg levers were having problems. Good people.

Put my brand new set of R1's on my bike this weekend. After a couple minutes of messing with the lever angle and reach and seeing how they felt I noticed fluid dripping out from behind the rear MC.
Freaked out and looked it up here and this was the first thread I saw.
They're headed back to Formula today. So far they've been really easy to work with and have promised a fast turn around.
Still not happy about this. I have K24's and Puro's and have been very happy with them and now this. :madman:
Formula Brake USA has my brakes now. They seem to be working on a same-day turnaround time. I requested next day shipping to return the brakes to me. Should have them back in my hands tomorrow. Onetrack, I'll be able to report on your second question by then.
Seems like defective caps. They had to be replaced on mine. Charlie from Formula Brake USA received mine today, squared them away and sent them off. I should have them tomorrow.
Charlie from Formula Brake USA came through! I got the brakes back today and re-installed them. Charlie included a Formula t-shirt. Here's the new cap:
Charlie at Formula took care of me as well. Turnaround was quick. Brakes are mounted up and so far no issues. Since I live in Minnesota I've got a little time yet but the way I noticed the leaking in the first place was by mounting them in the garage and squeezing the levers...
Just went for a ride and had both brakes (R-1) leak fluid onto the bars. Unfortunately the bars are Truvative Noir riser bars and the carbon fiber is already blistered. Brakes and bars, I'm not pleased. Did I miss a recall ?
these guys have nothing to do with service and repair unfortunately. they just have big load of Formula brakes they cannot sell because of overpricing. and no replacement parts available yet.
Formula in Europe have worst customer service ever. I have recommended all my friends, coallegues and customers to not buy brakes from Formula, any model, any year, new or used. price is very high like a premium product but when they broke, owner will get no service or support.
anyone can read more details here about my own case with R1 leaking levers. the same case happened with my friend about 3 months before. and year ago the same. I did not trusted before faced by myself. top prices, no service. this is how Formula works here, took money and disappeared.
I did not asked for full replacement of brakes or levers but only for these small rubber membranes with caps to stop leaks. I am bike tech myself and have tools & experience to do replacement. direct calls and emails forwarded me to local office (Drivesport). local office first tried to resolve issue but found that italian office isn't responding, then told me to gtfo.
ps. for people who are using Formula brakes already I would recommend to install them at aluminium handlebars only. when Formula starts to leak (it will happen sooner or later) then your carbon handlebar coverage will be destroyed by brake fluid. also drops of fluid may screw up your frame coverage and equipment.
When I´m reseting the pistons on my 2012 R1s, there is a leak at the back of the MC and after pistons are reset, brakes need to be bled in order to make them work properly again.
Brakes have been ridden for less than 1500 km (still with original pads) without any steep of long descents and I feel like they have just broken in...
That rear MC cap looks differently than those pictured above (even differently than those replaced after warranty claims) so that´s probably just some random flaw. Hope it will be fixed under warranty.
