Bikes BRAKE; bones BREAK

This is one driving me mental.

Bikes have brakes. To slow down, you brake.

You can break bones, take a coffee break or break a move.

Brake is not equal to break.

This is mostly not targeted at this erudite crowd, but I read the thread on pinkbike about JOYRIDE and the majority of kids seem unable to make that simple distinction. Nevermind that some of them seem bizarrely attached to the idea that they can stop faster on a breakless (sic) bike.

Feel free to comment on your own grammar/spelling pet peeve (don't even get me started on affect/effect, led vs. lead and many more) or the joys of riding with no brakes. Or chains. I think I need BMX education. It's a whole different world. One that can't spell. I'm so old.

*hand raises*

I can't spell worth a damn...

I was a terrible english student, and only because I couldn't spell... my grammar is terrible too. The only reason I can't spell is because I'm lazy. That and the fact that I had to juggle at least three different languages growing up.

I know it is alot of peoples pet peeve... and I truly apologize for my errors... I do... but... hey... there are worse habits I suppose!

Ironically - I work for a national newspaper and am the last set of eyes that looks at the pages before they go to press (well second last as the pressman looks afterwards). I CAN catch every grammar mistake and spelling error... so go figure, I can't spell worth a damn and can catch others spelling mistakes...

I still try my best to correct myself before posting or before sending an email out... but sometimes, I'm just lazy. Shameful! I know!

Yeah I feel your pain about the rampant bastardization and Americanization of the English and Canadian written word. We used to spell "zation" words with 's' instead of 'z' (zed). There is no perceived need to spell correctly anymore. I blame text messaging, and spellcheck. Here's one that drives me nuts: FURTHER and FARTHER

Heh. Another one:
Advise (VERB): I advise that you don't take my grammar issues too seriously
Advice (NOUN): I need advice about letting it go...

You're right. I should not read pinkbike. But those illiterate children are our future! they'll be paying my pension! I am concerned!

My ESL brain is offended by the frequent use of "should of" in lieu of "should have" or "should've". At times I wonder if people read what they type before hitting the Enter key.

I often cringe when reading posts due to poor grammar and spelling. One that always gets me: road vs rode. "I road my bike..." Road is not a verb! Argh!
I agree that texting and spellcheck have taken the "younger generation" a long way down this road (not rode!) to poor language skills. But then again, I also think that wearing one's flannel pyjama pants in public is wrong too. Sometimes I think people don't realize that they have left their house, they are out in society and ought to behave that way as well.
*sigh* I'm too young to be this old! I sound like my grandmother.

I agree that it's worth reading all points of view, no matter how they're phrased. But as you point out, poor grammar and spelling colours your perception of the intelligence of the contributor. Thus, a poorly phrased message gets less respect than one that has been written grammatically and spelled correctly.

Let's not forget that not everyone's first language is English, sometimes bad grammar isn't necessarily always a badge of stupidity. I agree that using words like "b4" and "da" are pretty idiotic, but the occasional misuse of "their" and "there" is hardly anything to get bent out of shape over IMO

Based on my own observations, I would suggest that the worst offenders are not using English as their second language.

I work for the Globe and Mail for almost 7 years now, was with the National Post for 3 years before that... I am a preflight technician and transmission operator... so I see alot of the ads in the paper - and read the newspages before the readers do

Where are you going to be working if you be leaving the NFR?

I think we are in the same age category? Hmmm... now that I think about it... I am 37 and can't spell... shame shame...

I admit to my poor spelling yes... I admit that sometimes my postings are crappy and fragmented and, and, and... but it doesn't mean that I am less smarter than anyone who's grammar and spelling are great.

I happened to be an excellent student in school MINUS my english class. I could never get anything over 65-70 in english... My strengths - Mathematics, Accounting, Art, Geography and French. I think in my case, English was a boring subject and I was just lazy...

Lets give credit wear credit is do, tho.

Although the younger generation are largely responsible for perverting our good Queen's English they do have excuses. While at the library the other day I noticed a young woman listening to headphones (on bust apparently), texting on her phone in left hand and typing on a keyboard with her right. Perhaps her spelling was poor, but her dexterity and focus, very impressive.

My daughter has a learning disability and can't spell most words right even though she goes to a teacher who specializes in teaching kids like her. When I volunteer at the schools, quite a few of the kids do have trouble spelling and reading. Most of these kids have hearts of gold and they try so hard to get things right.
Give me those kids over snobby little straight A students any day.
I know a bunch of people who can't spell worth a crap but still manage to make over a hundred grand a year, so they aren't doing too bad despite their bad grammar.

OK, I've met you guys half way here by updating my avatar to more accurately reflect what most people probably visualize as a "sausage" vs. a "wiener". I can't do "phest" though in place of "fest", since if I post anywhere but on the Eastern forum no one will have any clue what the phuck I'm talking about.

Speaking of pasty sausages, I do love Weißwurst. It is so fresh and tender, not to mention it goes nicely with Weißbier...

For a few years now, I've had thoughts of combining Oktoberfest with late September or early October riding in the Bavarian and Austrian Alps.

Give me those kids over snobby little straight A students any day.
I know a bunch of people who can't spell worth a crap but still manage to make over a hundred grand a year, so they aren't doing too bad despite their bad grammar.
Point well taken. I certainly hope you have not felt offended racergurl. My beef is not with those who face daily learning challenges like your daughter or my oldest son. I am just put off by those who can't be bothered to use their language skills to their full ability because it's not cool. Thus endeth my rant.

I'm just a little touchy on the subject.
I totally agree that kids who have the brains to use proper grammar should use it, though it probably wouldn't be considered cool these days.

And in a vain attempt to re-rail the thread (I actually don't care! Keep up the funny),
I remembered peddling (when they really mean pedalling). That road/rode one is awful too.

As the other posters said, it's mostly the lazy English users that bug me, not the ESL ones (usually better) or people who have genuine learning disabilities. srsly tho - how is anyone supposed to learn proper usage when peeps can't B bothered to type stuph in phull?

In related news, love this site.

Perhaps I should re-translate to Finnish and back to English again. Who knows what you might end up saying!

I'll admit, I do get somewhat bothered by seeing the word phuck instead of fu**. It's new and disturbing. I like the traditional spelling a whole lot more.

It's an "in" joke (maybe even a tribute? ) encapsulating some of the more compelling moments on this forum for the past few months. If you have been fortunate enough to miss its origins in this context, consider yourself lucky.

Minor problem compared to the idiocy created by those who think that using text and IM style spelling in their posts is a good idea.

just spanking, but Mrs would wear a tight leather suit... The problem is with the fact that the actual spanking would be performed by Mr... So better check your grammar and drop that "s" next time...

you wouldn't see him...

he would be right behind you - very busy...

otherwise very nice person with some behavioral issues like riding on a bike without any gears and suspension and hanging around weird bunch that calls themselves an "Empire"...

However, Mrs is quite the opposite. And by that I mean really opposite. Mrs is actually a female. I know it's a shocker, but you have to trust me. However, Mrs exhibits same behavioral deficiencies as Mr... No gears, no suspension etc... You get the drift... There you go, you have been warned now....

Oggie is easily confused by the different genres of bikers. The ones that wear leather are your other friends Oggie.

Or maybe it's just that he's easily confused period?

That is not nice and you know, I will tell the story about you in the boy scout camp.

frankly i enjoy the challenge.

so much of the actual content around hear is so tripe that decovering the massage is the most gratuitous part.

despite an incredible degree in the language i am continuously being corrected in mine grammar buy 'english-as-second-languagers'. of course this mostly because they done learned from a professional, wearass we learned to make the same problems with words as our parents and piers done did.

As if he'd find you attractive anyway.

Gotta say, these threads are really balancing that line between funny, sexist/homophobic and offensive. Perhaps we could all take a little step back from the brink and talk about recumbents instead. Though, of course, that makes me think of this:

I'm not helping, am I?

It is time to breathe a little life into this thread. Perhaps we should try to break away from the misogyny, queer bashing, and rampant phallic themes.

I know; let's revisit Nerdgirl's original topic!

Some common grammatical errors that irk me:

"There's" instead of, "there are". e.g. "Hey, there's two arseholes on that camel!"

"I" instead of, "me" (and vice versa). e.g. "Just ask Sam or I" / ("Sam and me just bought some sausages.")

"Bath" instead of "bathe". e.g. "It's time to bath the dog."

Please add to this list! Let's see how long we can make it grow.
