Makes me happy I got my night ride in on Friday. Still, if the weather isn't too bad next weekend, maybe I can join in the Sat am ride

Next Saturday starts in the Mill Creek ravine. Were going to skip Terwilleger as some guys haven't been in the Mill Creek area for a while, so we're switching it up. I'm not sure about starting time yet. Probably not as insane early as Terwilleger, maybe 8am?

Anybody interested PM and I'll give you my address (I'm two blocks off the ravine so we decided my place is a good starting point as any).

I just got back from jasper. It's beautiful there. Cold but the trails are dry and fast.

I might be up for the early morning millcreek ride, kinda 50/50 at the moment. I'll probally only be on a couple hours of sleep, plus I have to commute there, so we'll see.

Why not meet at the upper Mill Creek Pool parking lot? Easy to find and the start of the good single track.

With a forecasted high of -1*C and flurries I don't think it matters. It will be cold and crappy no matter what time we go out! That being said, I prefer not going out before 8:00. Bundle up, boys!!!!

I'm still using the stock bonti's that came with my Paragon. Not sure what I'll do down the road just yet. I haven't had any issues with my tires so far.

Maxxis Ignitors for me - far better than most others I have used. They are great on dry and on wet. Where they fail is in really muddy conditions.

Given a choice between a Stumpjumper FSR, Epic or Enduro, which would you guys pick for the types of trails we have here in Edmonton and for the occasional venture to Jasper/Banff?

For most of my riding here in Edmonton I've been using Continental race kings. I've also used nevegals and schwalbe racing ralphs with success. The nevegal is a beefier tire, though I felt it was overkill for what I was riding. I use those when I run into more rocky conditions.

Neither. I think a hardtail is sufficient for the Edmonton area. Out of the options you listed, probably an Epic is the best bet, but I still think it's overkill.

I did my entire group ride on Saturday (Terwillegar + River Valley singletrack) on my 'cross bike, so a hardtail is definitely sufficient around here

That being said I would definitely enjoy myself more, clean difficult sections with ease more often (i.e. Fireman's in Terwillegar), and ride much faster on a full suspension on the local trails. Go with the Epic or Stumpjumper. The Stumpy would be nice if you decide to do any longer rides in the mountains. Extra inches up front help in the mountains.

Latest forcast is -10 Celcius on Saturday, but a high of 17 Celcius on holiday Monday. Anybody free for some riding on Monday? I'm going to go down to Terwilliger, probably around 10amish. If it's really -10 Celcius on Saturday, I might not go for the ride...we'll see.

The weathernetwork.com forecast says 0*C all three days, my phone says +1*C, +4*C and+4*C for Sat, Sun and Mon. Environment Canada says 2, 11 and 17. for Sat, Sun and Mon. Who to believe? lol

I will probably still do a Sat ride at Mill Creek but I am not going to be able to make it out until the afternoon after my son's gymnastics - probably a 2:00pm start. I am going to try to get to Ft. Sask. on Monday for a ride. I'll suggest a 10:00am start at Turner Park by the tennis courts. If anyone is interested in tagging along for either ride, feel free to join me.

2pm sounds good on Mill Creek for Saturday. I'll meet you in the parking lot, unless it's snowing or raining.

I'm not sure about Monday. If the wife and son want to bail on Terwilliger, then I'll meet you in the Fort.

How about the rest of the Saturday crew? Are any of them interested in coming out either day?

The other guys are up for Saturday, weather permitting. I emailed them about Monday - have not yet heard back. I'll post some updates closer to the weekend when I know for sure.

Graeme is out as he's gone this weekend. He's not sure if he'll be back in town in time for a Monday right or not yet.

Gord - Still hoping we'd get a chance for you to show me the Canada cup trail! Was really excited that, bummed about the rain spoiling it...

Did a night ride on Tuesday and last night. Both nights were great for riding, although I had to wear some plastic bags in my shoes last night. Riding conditions were good - trails were not wet, a bit tacky in places, but for the most part dry. Surprising given the rainfall we've had lately.

I only saw one other rider on both nights. A few people walking, but they tend to get out of the way faster when riding at night than in the day (must be the lights).

Snow should be gone by Saturday, not sure how wet it'll be. Hopefully we get another good two weeks of riding in after this snow melts.

I'm volunteering for it this weekend. I'm hoping to marshal on a sketchy corner of doom for maximum entertainment value, and crossing my fingers for more rain or snow. 'Cross is at its best when it's nasty. Nationals last year was bone dry and cold.

Got a ride in last night as well, it's a little bit mushy in the lower creek areas but for the most part it was dry.

I hate the snow though!! I really can't see myself riding in it, even with just a little dusting. Not sure if I will be riding again till April
and spin bikes get so boring.

So is Saturday and possibly Monday still a go? It's damn cold out right now. Next week we're supposed to see a recovery back to the plus side of zero. Need to do some night rides before another snow fall.

We need to baseline a cancel threshold for Saturday 2pm. Any ideas? The other guys who regularly do the Saturday morning rides are going to cancel if it's below zero.

The below 0 isn't bad, it's more about trail conditions for me. Instead of cycling gear I will have to put on the XC ski gear.

The Saturday ride will be light on riders as most people are at CX at Argyll Park or 4X in St. Albert.

Looks like I'm going to bail. We're going to head out of town so today is out for me. Gord - the other guys on the Saturday rides are out as well (too cold and too much snow for them).

I'll post back on Sunday/Monday to see if anybody's up for a ride on Monday

I'm still heading out - it's nice out in the trees.

Monday ride is still on at Ft. Sk - 10:00 start at Turner Park. I think there is 5 of us so far...

Conditions were great today. There is a bit of snow down but it doesn't affect handling at all. The only problem I had was I overheated and I only had a long sleeve shirt and a hoodie. Once you get moving you really don't feel the cold. I'm really looking forward to Monday's ride!

I agree , was a great day for riding ,long ride in inclement weather today and loved every minute of it I went from the start of millcreek to Capilano park back to Kinsmen and rode some trails there . I must have gone through Millcreek around 2 going home . did you still start then ? I was keeping an eye out for you .

I hit the trail around 2:10. I didn't see any other bikes in my adventures but I did see lots of tracks. There was more foot traffic than I have ever seen. I was dodging people the whole time on trails I have never seen people walking on.

Just got back into town. Drove to Valemount and back. Needed to do some things in Valemount that couldn't wait. No snow in Valemount, a bit in Hinton, and Edmonton looks okay.

I'm still in for Monday. May try to get a ride in tomorrow am down in Mill Creek.

Speaking of Canada cup , anyone here involved with the cyclocross national championships ? Strange , I think this is a much bigger event than the CC was and I hear nothing anywhere ! Whats wrong with the media ? I was coming back from my ride yesterday and noticed something going on so rode up to the velodrome and whoah ............... I was shocked ! I was talking to some guys and when Geoff Kabush walked right by me . I also saw Alison Sydor ...............Pretty cool stuff . Yet pretty lame as far as the attention it got !

I was in the Four Point Sheratin yesterday for some wedding stuff and the hotel wedding planner told me there were "tons of these bike guys" in the hotel. The lobby was an impressive display of bikes. Everywhere. I was paying more attention to the bikes being wheeled out than the wedding stuff!

There are a bunch of trails West of the high level bridge on the south side of the river. Take any trail off the main path - they are all quite good.

Heading East from the high level bridge, stay left and drop in to a trail along the river just past the washrooms. When you come out under the bridge, stay left and follow the single track. When you come out, follow the road to the left and go through the opening in the fence. Turn right and head up the ST trail up the hill. Turn left at the next trail and follow to the paved trail. Follow the paved trail for a bit. When you get past the piece where the path is right by the road, watch for the granular trail on your left. Once you see the granular trail, take the next left. That is a trail called Treasure Island. Follow that all the way and it will take you back to the paved trail just on the East of the trail entrance to Old Timers Cabin parking lot. Go just past that intersection and turn left. This is West Coast trail. follow that to the top of a set of stairs, Drop down beside the stairs and turn right and follow it across the roots. You will exit back to the paved trail, Head west and take the next left back up a rooty climb. This will bring you back the the bottom of the stairs - turn right and head down the back alley and go right through the posts. Start heading west back along the paved trail but take the road rather than the paved trail. It will turn left up a hill and you want to turn up a trail just beside a house. When the trail takes you down a hill to the left, take the left about 1/2 way down the hill. Follow that trail back to the paved trail. If you head across to the ST and turn left, it will take you back to the kinsmen.

Thanks for the trails guys! Biked to the old timers cabin today, took the trail down just south of the parking lot, went across a scary bridge and hit some rooty areas... was a lot of fun!

Only 2 issues - somehow my front fork got frozen and locked up. Riding very rooty areas is not fun on a rigid bike! Also... my Wellgo (Stupid Shimano knockoff POS) cleats clogged up, making for a very annoying time half way though. Now that it's warmed up and thawed out, it works again.

My solution to the second is the buy Time pedals (or Eggbeaters. Kind of a toss up right now), but need help from all you Edmontonians for the 1st! It was only -3 today by my cyclocomputer, and I do intend on riding until -40.... as long as my fork doesn't lock up again. What can I do about that? (My buddy Jeff on his brand new Specialized Stumpjumper didn't have the same problem with his Fox TALAS... It's only the stupid Suntour on my Hardrock)

If you have a low end Suntour it might have elastomer-based springs (i.e. big rubber bands). If this is the case it will always freeze up in the cold. Winter is a good time to whip out the rigid singlespeed anyway for ease of maintenance , and you'll learn how to be a smoother, faster rider.

Wuss! It was a sweet ride today. A little dicey in some areas, but a ton of fun. Just a thin layer of snow was down and there weren't too many wipe outs.

I haven't ridden that poorly since I was a noob. I couldn't keep upright out there.

Also I can't say it enough. Crank bros are ****. They are the worst pedals ever made. couldn't get clipped in and couldn't stay clipped in. I need to get another pair of times for my hardtail too.

Here`s a couple . My buddy "ruling the rock" on the Holy Cross in grand Junction , easily one of the most technical trails I have ridden so far .

The second is a dime a dozen Moab shot , I really am impressed on what your bikes will climb out there .

I am a wus.

With the weather warming up to the teens by Saturday, any plans for any night rides this week? Dana, are you still running Friday night rides? Anybody up for a Thursday ride?

My lights should be coming in soon, hopefully this week, so I'm anxious to try out a three light setup.

My family is coming in Wednesday for a late Thanksgiving. They will be leaving Sunday morning so I would be best advised to not go out Saturday.

I think there is a Friday night ride at Ft. Sk in the works which I might be able to sneak out for. I will post back with more details as they come up.

The forecast just keeps getting better and better for Sunday, so I will definitely be going for a ride then. Let's set a tentative time of 10:00am for Sunday at the Kinsmen tennis courts.

Sunday at 10am sounds good to me. I'm going out Saturday either to Mill Creek or Terwilliger. I think I'd rather stay in Edmonton for the night rides, but we'll see how things go later on this week.

Hey guys, in Edmonton for a week. Looking forward to riding some of the trails I loved when I lived there a couple yrs ago. Anyone up for a ride friday daytime or saturday morning or late afternoon? I'm hoping to ride a bunch while there. Hopefully get some kinsmen, mill creek, and twillegar rides in. Those where my favs. Is ewok village still a ridable area or did it all wash out like i recall parts of mill creek had.

So I've got three Magicshines mounted on my bar for tomorrow plus the helmet mounted light as well. I'm thinking that the three lights on the bar are a bit heavy for my liking. I've got two batteries wrapped to the downtube bottle cage and another battery running below the stem. I'd really like to run the three light setup for shlts and giggles, but I may have to drop one light off the bar.

Too much bar clutter. Going to run two lights on the bar plus the helmet for tomorrow's ride. Pretty stoked as it's been over a week since I was last on my bike. I fully expect to wipe out tomorrow night!

I probably will. It depends on how my back feels. It's pretty sore right now and I'm not sure how it'll feel tomorrow after tonight's ride. If I do, it'll be around 11am starting in the Mill Creek area.

So that's why I was all alone in front of Red Bike until 8:30pm. Must always remember to check the bulletin board before I head out.

Sorry to have missed you guys. Ended up going home and dragging the wife out on her maiden night ride. Two lights for her, one on the helmet and one on the bar. She LOVED it! Now I just have to get her out on the single track (work in progress). We ended up going for 1.5 hours, just got back now. Nice temperature, not too hot, not so cold that the toes go numb.

I'll be riding tomorrow and probably Sunday too. I'm in for a group ride Sunday if anybody else is interested.

I could probably make it out for a 2:00 ride on Saturday. I think a spin out at Strathcona Science Park (17th st just south of the Yelowhead) might be in order as it's been a month or so since I rode there. We could hit up the trail to the south of the river between Goldbar and SSP if anyone is feeling adventurous! Plans are still on for the 10:00 ride on Sunday at the Kinsmen tennis courts. Anyone who wished to join on either ride is more than welcome.

Gotta get fitted for a tux/suit tomorrow at 3:30pm so a 2pm Saturday ride is out for me. Busy day tomorrow all around so I'm going to pass on any plans as I won't be able to keep them.

Sunday 10am at Kinsmen sounds good! I'll be there.

I'm going to switch my tires to something that sheds mud a bit better. The Ignitors are great for all conditions but mud - they do not shed at all.

Greasy, wet, two front wheel washes saved, and one over the back flip with a spin out on the climb at the beginnig of the ride. Multiple cleat clearing stops, a few skiing sessions with the wheels on the downhills, and a good pound of clinging mud on the frame.

In other words, it was a great time!

well, I wish I could have brought my bike to Banff (was there for a conference) but no go...though the Fairmont Banff Springs is pretty posh. I'll have to get the tires dirty here in the coming days

Trails were pretty wet in the river valley yesterday, not a surprise b/c of rain.

Has anyone been out today? I'd like to try again this afternoon....

Hope it turns out ok for the hostages at the WCB building.......anyone in the area?

I will be heading out tonight at 7:30 from the Mill Creek Pool upper parking lot. I suspect the trails will still be wet (hopefully just tacky) at that time.

If anyone is interested for a ride Friday or Saturday night in Fort Saskatchewan 5:30ish post on here , or send me a message . This of course depends on quality of the trails .
Rode into the night last week and it was pretty cool .

Saturday may be a possiblity for me, but I can't confirm until Saturday.

Sunday is calling for clear and sunny skies. I wouldn't mind getting back to Terwilliger, say around 10am?

The way the trails are right now I can`t see them being any good for Friday , It`s like soup out on the singletrack and that is all FtSk is . I have too much respect for the trails to go out and trash them . Hopefully it will be dry enough by Saturday .

Just got back from a ride. Edit: (missed the ".") .5km on some single track in the Mill Creek and then a pavement speed blast up to Yellowhead/Rundle Park and back home. 40km round trip and yes, the pavement is good and the single track is single crap. Looks like Sunday for single track for me. Unless it rains, again, which will leave me to pavement only (better than nothing).

Got stopped in the alley way by a guy walking his dog that wanted some info on my lights. He said he could see me coming up the Mill Creek and waited to see how many riders there were. He was obviously surprised it was just me, albeit with three lights going. This is the third time in the past month somebody has stopped me to ask about these lights.

And what's with all the walkers playing the deer in the headlight game when I come up on them?

Yeah, I've tried riding the last three days and the trails are just too wet. I end up riding the paved paths which beats not riding......

Maybe tomorrow afternoon........

Sunday is calling for clear skies, and it's supposed to be rain free until Monday. Monday might see some snow. If it snows Monday, I think that's it for fall riding.

At this point snow might be a good thing. It will get us back on the ST and a) not destroy the trails and b) not destroy my drivetrain
