I'm back from my crazy epic bike tour (as of last Monday).
Just in time for the excellent fall riding season!
I'll have some photos up eventually, but the bike tour is a tale best told over frosty beverages after a ride.

Ah yes, fall riding. I would have to say my favorite time of the year to ride.
Now I have to figure out how to sneak away from campus to get in a lunch hour ride

Do you guys do group rides? Just starting MTBing and trying to push my hardtail to its limits (and myself)! Need to look for some trails around University area...
I too would like to try to sneak out between classes and go ride!

Closest trails to the university would definently be in the kinsmen/queen elizabeth area (I think that is what the ravine is called.. it's pretty much connected to the kinsmen area). There are some stairs at the top of Emily Murphy Hill right beside the tory turtle building that take you right into the kinsmen trails, you can also go down emily murphy hill and through the ravine that connects emily murphy park to kinsmen.

We have tried to do group rides before with little success. That being said, with days getting shorter it gets harder and harder to get out mid-week. We can make another attempt at some group rides, if there is any interest.
I'll throw an idea out for this weekend - anyone who would like to go for a spin, feel free to come out. Sunday morning at 9:00 at the Kinsmen tennis courts parking lot. If anyone wants to go out on Saturday afternoon/evening, I could do that too.
*edit* I changed the days as my wife informed me that my Saturday morning is prebooked this week.

Mike - I am in Mill Woods as well, so if you ever want to throw your bike on with me rather than commute to the trail, I don't mind at all. I know you like to log a lot of kms, but if there is a vehicle going that way already....
I usually ride at Strathcona Science Park on Saturday afternoon/evening as it is very quiet out there compared to any other river valley trail and allows you to open things up a bit more, but I am up for anything, really. As long as I am on single track I am happy!
JCYC5 - new riders are always welcome! The more the merrier!

Where do you ride in Laurier? I live fairly close, but the only trails I saw were in the dog park and they didn't look that good (well the ones I found atleast).

I will be there Sunday around 9:00. We can do a spin around the Kinsmen area, out to Ewok, in and out of Mill Creek and back through the Kinsmen area. It's about 20km of some of the best single track in the city.

I'm pretty sure the City removed all the water fountain taps on the outdoor drinking areas, other than the Hawerlak Park washroom (the tap on the side of the building). I would think that you could dart into the Kinsmen and use the washroom to fill up your bottle(s).
Nice pics!
Did Tewillerger this morning. 7-8:30am with a buddy of mine. Great riding and at that time, nobody else is on the trails so you can bomb them pretty fast.

I was out in Mill Creek this morning (11-ish) and was thinking of heading down towards Kinsmen, but I had my freehub fail (dangnabbitsonofafish!!!). Turned it around and limped it back to Millwoods At least it was the Cx bike (crummy little Tiagra hub) vs the Cake (with the Pro II).

Scariest ride of the year for me. What is passe for Gord and Jay was out of my comfort zone. It's weird riding with your heart in your throat for two hours, but I was pretty stoked! Great ride and lots of new trails for me to go back to.
Will post back on next Saturday time and location for Twilleger!

I was in kinsmen around noon/one'oclock and saw 3 guys at the top near the playground in the queen elizabeth area and was thinking it might be the guys from here? haha. Hopefully I will be able to go on the next ride.
The trails around kinsmen are in really nice condition right now, but I headed over to millcreek for a bit and everything seemed really muddy and eroded (maybe I just don't know where the good stuff is though).
Super windy today too eh?

I was in the same boat when I tried all of those trails for the first time. Once you get down them 4 or 5 times and you will won't have any problems, or at least you will know where to expect the problems!

Wow - a weekend of learning plants in the bush is extremely interesting and thrilling in a different way than MTB. That was a good way to spend the weekend.
Anyways, I'm going for a ride after Critical Mass on Friday. Night riding should be fun .
Location TBA - I will post it here.

I was just about to ask if you were a member of the University outdoors club, then I saw your sig! Haha. I didn't go on the trip but remembered seeing it on their site a while back.
Actually I just joined up on orientation and haven't been paying much attention since.. but I just went on their site and saw that they are having a mountain bike trip. Do you know how technically difficult it will be? Looks like it'll be fun, albeit probally a bit cold as well.

Gord, check your pm.
JCYC5 - plan on going in Twilleger Park Saturday 7am. The park's clear of dog walkers at that time so we can rip up the trails without too much caution for others around blind corners. There's a parking lot at the base of the lot, we could meet you there around 7:20am if you're able to make it.

Despite the fact that I have graduated and technically "moved on", I am still helping out with the Club as a trip leader as long as I have the free time. I'm not on the website now, and I prefer it that way .
So... that means I'm leading the bike trip! Sign-up in the office (Student's Union Building 6-16) if you want to come. Trip is capped at 10 people. You need to buy a membership ($10/student, $15/non-student) if you are not a member.
If you have a vehicle and bike you will be given priority over someone that has NO bike (i.e. many international students are trying to sign-up - they must find rentals/demo bikes IN EDMONTON for the weekend). Rentals in Jasper turn into a gong show. I'll check out the trip list when I step into the office today. We run a carpool out to Jasper - you pay the driver for gas.
We are going to ride some primo singletrack in Jasper on Saturday - Valley of the Five/Wabasso, Overlander/Athabasca River, OR Saturday Night Lake loop. Sunday will be more Jasper OR Hinton. I guarantee you it will be cold that weekend, if not on the trail then definitely in the campground at night. Weather can be rather unpredictable this time of year, but lower elevation trails can remain snow-free for quite some time.
P.M. me if you want more info. I guarantee it will be fun if the weather is nice!

jkirkpatri - I wish I could come! Have to work that day unfortunately (I work at United Cycle!)
Excel - I really am interested in coming out to that! I have a couple buddies who also would like to, and they have a van that could probably work. All of us have bikes! Hope it doesn't fill up while they check their schedule to see if it could work! Do PM me more info though! Would we need to bring our own tents?

Here is the plan for Sunday's ride - Fort Saskatchewan! As it's not something we can just commute to on our bikes, we can definately arrange some carpooling. I can comfortably fit 4 in my truck if anyone needs a lift. Where we carpool from will depend on who needs a ride and where in the city is central for those coming. If it's just 1 person, I could pick them up at their house. Let's try to be on the trail by 9:00 which would mean we need to leave Edmonton by no later than 8:30. Anyone who is driving themselves, meet by the tennis courts at Turner Park in Ft. Sask. Anyone interested? We need to know by Thursday so carpooling can be arranged.

I frankensteined my F8 pretty much at lunch...Ghetto SS(Hope the chain doesn't snap from too much tension), Brakeless because tektro discs were warped...
Tho when I have the funds, I'll be getting a Back wheel for $120ish, an SS kit for $15ish and a set of bb7's.
Btw...Since the winter riding season is getting closer...Are schwalbe Ice spikers @ MEC worth the investment?

Can't make it. Wife has other plans for me. She says I'll have to ride with my "new internet friends" another time.
Sorry, but I can only make Saturday.

Outdoors Club trip status: full as of tonight, HOWEVER there are many people that need to try to rent bikes in Edmonton (damn international students). If that all falls through more space will open up. I will start to deal with that tomorrow. Also, I may need another driver to make the trip work.
For anyone that is interested: the Club can rent you camping gear if you have a membership ($20 deposit & credit card info req'd per item). If you are worried about cold fall camping, layer up inside your sleeping bag (toques, long underwear, gloves etc.) and you can always sleep in the car if it snows really hard (2 years ago... ).
Ultimately, if you ARE interested please come to the office and put your name down on the waiting list. I will try to accommodate. If there are additional people on the waiting list this is a good thing in case I need drivers or a spot opens up last minute.
This trip is weather dependent.
Cheers!

I officially love frankenstein. So light and climbs like a mountain goat. Though once I get the funds...I'll set it up as a legit ss with 32/16 gearing. xD. And don't worry guys, I'll be putting a set of bb7s on it or something lighter...I think I'm becoming a weight weenie.

Ahh, hopefully those international students can't find something to rent! I looked at the office hours and nothing works for me tommorow, so I will come sign up on wednesday most likely.
I would be interested in going to Fort Saskatchewan as well, I would need a ride though.
Is the riding suitable for beginners?

Don't do it. It's expensive.
But it's fun. I WW'd out my Trance X and I'd do it again in a heartbeat
Speaking of which...... I went out for a ride this morning, and the trails in the fall + cool/crisp morning air are amazing.

I rode Ft. SK as a VERY beginner last year, well rode some and walked some. It will definitely be a good measuring stick of where you are and what you need to work on. You might jus surprise yourself!
I need to know what area/neighborhood of the city you are in to get an idea of how to best arrange rides.

Speaking of which...... I went out for a ride this morning, and the trails in the fall + cool/crisp morning air are amazing.
|
Of course its expensive...When I said weight weenie, I meant having the bare minimum on the bike. Such as some sort of brake(s), SS, Rigid. My ideal bike. Edit:Reason why an SS rigid is the ideal bike for me...Less stuff to break.

I am in the west end, somewhat close to west edmonton mall. I can get to the downtown or university areas fairly easily from my house if that would help simplify things.

Gord - I may or may not be able to get a ride to Ft. Sask. If not, would you have space for 2 from University?

Hmmm...I'd love to hook up, but Sat I'm either volunteering at School of Cross (Cx race) or I'm going to an RCC orientation with a team member to try to do some recruiting.
Hmm...hopefully I get that wheel back early this week....I have a hunkering to see all the ST I had to skip on last Saturday when the Tiagra tapped out on the Cx bike. <- Yeah, I know, I've gone rigid and semi-weight weenie with that bike, but it is the best choice when I ride up from SE Edmonton to the trails and have to ride back afterwards.

If Gord makes it Saturday, that'll be four confirmed riders for Terwilliger. Anybody else who can make it for a 7am start, PM me and I'll give you the address of my friend's place from where we will depart.
It'll still be light out by the time we leave, so don't worry about lights.

I think I can fit you in if you need a ride. As I said my truck holds 4 comfortably, but 5 can fit in the cab. Right now we have myself + my buddy who is a bit west of downtown + plastictrees from the west end + possibly JCYC5 + 1 From the University = 5. If you can't find a ride the guys in the back seat might be a little cramped, but chances are someone will have to change plans before Sunday rolls around. Bikes will be a bit cramped in the box as well, but I can get it all to fit.
Based on locations, I think if we meet at the Kinsmen around 8:15 we should be able to make Ft. SK by 9:00. Let's plan for the parking lot by the tennis courts as it's not busy and easier to spot people. That gives time to load bikes and gear and head out by 8:30. If you aren't there by the time all the bikes are loaded and everyone is in, you get left behind! If your plans change and can no longer make it, please post. If anyone else wants to join and needs a ride, post it so we can see if we can arrange something for you.

I see no reason why I can't make it, other than no being able to drag my ass out of bed in time!

Okay, that was some scary f*cking ****. Decided to take a ride through mackinnon. Stopped at the top of one of the hills and a guy in a black hoodie and jeans came out and threatened to stab me if I didn't give him my bike. Good thing that old couple came walking up the hill which scared him back to the bushes. I don't think I've ran and ridden a bike that fast.
Called the complaint line and I'll probably be speaking to someone today about it.
And I should go get a new phone seeing as I lost my old one earlier in that ride...Atleast the contract runs out today....All in all...I'm not going in mackinnon anymore in the mornings.

That's not good. You should come out on Saturday am to erase this memory. I've been approached by older guys (you know what I mean) in that ravine, but never been mugged.

I'll try to make it...I need to find a ride. I'll talk to my dad and see if he can give me a ride early. He has to go out that morning anyways for a work meeting at 8 or 9. I will more than likely be on the blue F7 rather than my F8 as it's geared, meatier tires and brakes.
But yeah, I'll try to make it.

Happened in mackinnon ravine at about 8:30am. I booked it out of there so fast its not even funny. Policed were called and an couple officers went and looked in the area.
My parents still don't get why it didn't scare my bike love out of me. Its going to take more than an encounter to make me stop...well, I don't think anything could make me stop riding. Its too much fun.

gord - I'm in for Sunday, +1 or maybe +2. From what it seems like so far, might have a car for that. May or may not want to meet up with you at Kinsmen just to made sure we don't get lost, but we shall see, and I'll let you know when I have a better idea! But definitely count me and one of my buddies in. We're both beginners!
excel - signed up for the outdoors club trip today, fingers crossed spots open up!
sherijumper - you have no idea how jealous I am, especially with the amount of school work that's bogging me down now! Argh!! Have fun and share photos and stories when you're back!
zadey - That's crazy. Hope they catch him and thank goodness you're alright!

Sure, we can do that. When you say 'beginners' can you tell me how much experience you have? Years riding, type of terrain, etc. FYI, Ft Sask is an advanced/expert trail and about 16 kms out and back. There is a paved trail that runs parallel if the trail is too much. It will probably be a fast paced ride but we won't leave you behind.

Only started seriously riding this year. Had bikes before, but never took it to technical areas. I've been riding some single tracks here, notably the one that runs down alongside Groat road, but nothing too technical yet!

wow I haven't check this site for a while. I quit my job and just started school and i'm f@#king busy!!! Oh and my car died so i've been trying to fix that with what little free time i have.
I'd like to go on the ride on sunday if i can find the time. I have a few assignments due next week so i'll see how many I get done.
I'll also through this out there although i know it's pretty late. Some friends and I meet at redbike almost every friday at 10 for a night ride. Last week we rode from 10 until 12:45. It's a good time. I think it's all weird this week because they want to ride after Critical Mass so i don't know what's going on. But pretty much guaranteed if it isn't pouring we'll be riding next friday at 10ish.
JCYC5 - I live by the university. I live right by kinsmen. You can send me a private message sometime and we can arrange to meet up someday and i can show you all the good singletrack around here. I know most of the trails around here and in mill creek pretty well because i live here and it's what I ride when i'm short on time (if i have more time i'll head to other areas of the city or load my bike and drive to terwilliger). I'm pretty busy right now but I always find time for a bike ride. It might be a short 1 hour tour but if you're interested pm me and we can meet at kinsmen and i can show you around.

Dana - That would be sweet! Just have to work out some time that works for the both of us! 6 classes, running a lab, working... doesn't leave much time unfortunately!
I would have loved to join your night ride this Friday! It would have been perfect since I get off work at 9:30 and I'm dying to test out a new light I just got!

Okay, you should be okay. There may be sections you need to walk but you can probably ride 80%+ of the trail.

What Gord really means, is that you can ride 80% of the trail, but your knuckles will be white due to your death grip on your bars, you'll be saying, "oh ****! oh ****! oh ****! to yourself about 70% of the time, and you'll learn how to unclip faster than you've ever unclipped before!
In other words, you'll have a blast! Too bad I'm going to miss out.

Saturday's Terwilliger ride has been delayed to start at 7:30am due to sun contstraints at 7am. So far there is four confirmed riders. If you can make it, send me a PM and I'll give you the address of my friend's place.

we usually ride most anything in the river valley. most of us who meet ride and some of us race cross country. So it's cross country stuff. No drop or jumps. If you are new some of it will be challenging but you can just walk something if you don't feel comfortable.

I might be able to swing by sometime this autumn and try it out. Not this Friday, though. I'll post to confirm for any future Friday night rides. Sounds pretty cool.

I know what you mean. I am only in 4 classes. But in my graduate program 4 classes take pretty much all of my time. I don't have a lot of class time but a lot of other work and projects. Fortunately I can work around it because I only have class on tuesdays, wednesdays and fridays. So i can make time on a monday, thursday, saturday, or sunday. I can usually afford an hour or two in the evening and just do more work earlier that day or later that evening. As long as it isn't on a tuesday, or wednesday i might be able to make it work.

What program?
I know what you mean, those 4 classes seem to take more time than 6 undergrad courses.
I am finishing 1 class that I chickened out on last fall. I am trying to get in some rides during the week around lunch between classes, just 1.5 to 2 hrs of hard (to me) riding.
But just wait until you have kids, then it will seem like you had all the time in the world
With newborn twins and and a 2.5 y.o., I have to make the most of every free second

Fortunately my wife and I don't want kids and don't plan on having kids. But who knows. Things change. I doubt it though. I've never liked kids.

Fair enough, but I have to warn you, that's exactly what I said when I was 25
I have to say that while I've had some pretty neat life experiences, I would trade them all in in a heartbeat for my kids. Nothing I have experienced can match the joy that my 2.5 y.o. brings me.
But the sleepless nights really do suck

Ah, I see....I'm 31 now and let's just say that while I love my kids to no end, I had a vasectomy given to me for my 31st birthday, haha.
Well then kids just might not be for you. I would have to disagree with 'everyone' when they say it will change, some times it doesn't.......which means more time for biking
So you ride for pedalhead? I've bought a couple of bikes there, nice place and good guys. I keep meaning to go out on a group ride, but it's tough for me to get out at 6.........
I'd love to get into the racing scene.....maybe next year when things settle down a bit...

It was my oldest son (now 11) who got me into mountain biking 2 years ago when I was 30. He lives with his mother on Vancouver Island but when I have him for the summer all we do is ride our bikes. He is now capable of riding some very technical trails and in the next 3 years it will probably be me trying to keep up with him. My youngest is 2 and a bit and he wants to ride all the time on his run bike. He has no fear and has amazing balance and handling skills for being so young. I took him out to SSP and people couldn't believe he was getting around on the ST out there on a run bike. It's great that they want to be biking all the time as it gives me an excuse to be out all the time.

I have a BSc. in Mechanical Engineering and I spent the day at the career fair in the Butterdome - what a zoo! I don't really feel like settling down yet, but I want to start a meaningful career.

It turns out I can not come out on Sunday
Unfortunately I have to go out for brunch with family! Atleast I found out now instead of at last minute.
Hopefully there is another group ride the week after.. I definently want to go on one!
I know there is another group ride at terwillegar on saturday morning, but since I won't be able to ride on sunday I will probally be going for a ride on Saturday (and I can't get to terwillegar.. especially that early!), so if anyone wants to go ride in kinsmen or millcreek shoot me a PM. I'll probally be going late afternoon.

If you are still coming to Uni, we could follow you to Ft. Sask, otherwise an address for meeting point (could google map the route) would be awesome!
*excited*

My two friends and I will be continuing to do Terwilliger on Saturday mornings until the snow flies. The start time will be pushed back accordingly as the sun rises later in the morning as we progress through October. Anybody's welcome to join us.

We will be starting from the tennis courts in Turner Park in Ft. SK. You can map Turner Park on google. It's quite simple to find.
Both people that might be coming with me can't confirm until Friday, so I don't know if I am going to be going through the University area or not. I will update as the time nears.

Just flipping through channels and CBC has a documentary about cycling. You can read more about it at http://www.cbc.ca/documentaries/docz...wer/index.htmlIn Canada, bicycles "don't get no respect." From the story of Igor, and the anatomy of the underground world of bike peddlers in Toronto, this film spins out to how other cities are making riding safe. Using innovative "bike-cam" techniques to convey, up-close, the sensation of bike riding, a series of character-driven mini-narratives propel the film through a study of what makes a city "bikeable". Whether it's the public bike program in Paris, bike mega-garages in Amsterdam, bike paths in Vancouver and Montreal, or the surprising leadership of New York City, we follow the story of this remarkable little conveyance as it wheels though the first decade of the 21st century.
It airs again Fri, Sat, Sun and Mon on CBC and Newsworld - http://tvlistings.zap2it.com/tv/pedal-power/EP01183195
