Bad news from the Yeti Tribe - AnthonyS

Morning all, I'm afraid I have some bad news from the Yeti Tribe and family.

Anthony Sloan passed away yesterday.

We are still reeling from the news and trying to cope with loss of one of the stars of this world.

News is sparse right now, we will try to keep everyone here at MTBR updated as we learn more but please know that Anthony is riding one of his many bikes on singletrack that ends only where the sun sets, that the light for his photos is perfect and that his journeys are taking him to every corner of our world.

Godspeed Anthony, you are missed with all of our hearts.

From all of the Yeti crew here in Golden and the Yeti Tribe worldwide.

Anthonys at Interbike 2008

There is a void on our singletrack now.

Just shocked and stunned by this, I was just standing there talking with him Tuesday. Anthony was an amazing person and will be missed by all. Very sad. He was way too young. He had many more miles to ride and many more images to compose. An enormous loss.

I'm shocked. I cannot tell you how long my desktop image has been a shot taken by Anthony, and any time he posted I just knew the content was going to be a treat. I only know him from 'the internet' yet I feel like I've taken many vicarious adventures because of him.

This just sucks. What happened?

Anthony and I have known each other since the 80s. I'm at such a loss, and I know lots of people who are hurting beyond description right now. He'd have the words, but I don't.

From his blog:

"Here at play in the cathedral forest, sunlight lighting up the golden leaves, the breeze running its fingers through them and making them dance in a way that is so very much better than the false glitter and dazzle of Vegas. Though far from pure, I felt cleansed. Human again. There is something comforting in fall. The clarity of the light, the sweet smell of decay. Knowing that in a month or so Winter will begin tucking all of this in for the night. So you get as much of it as you can, you stay up a little bit later just like when you were a kid and you entered into those complex bedtime negotiations, putting it all out on the line in the hopes of getting thirty more minutes."

If that ain't the story of life, then I don't know what is...

RIP SS

I did not know Anthony well, but for many years here in Austin. First through mtb racing, over 10 years ago. Usually it was just a brief meetings as I am way too slow to ride with him except on those rare occocations he would lead a no drop ride. I was fortunate to visit with A several times after he moved to CO. The first big MoJo Fruita trip he came and shared our campsite and rides. God Speed A.

I am completely floored by this news.

I have a horrible feeling in the pit of my stomach.

I, like Cyclemaniac, did not know him well, but have known him for many years - probably about 7ish years. He was always so much fun to watch ride - it always seemed so effortless - as if he floated over the rocks and ledges. And yet really approachable - a group of us used to ride in the mornings at City Park, and I was always grateful for the patience he and the others showed toward me (I was the newbie girl in the group).

I always loved reading his blog and posts, and his pictures are just amazing. Truly a loss for us all. My thoughts go out to his family.

I'm really going to miss him.

Anthony,

Was a great rider, a great boss, and a really good friend.

I enjoyed our trips to Fruita, Titus in AZ, and Specialized in CA.

At the end of every ride where you kicked my ass, i knew you would have a great beer waiting for me at the trail head. I think it is the only way i made it though some of the rides.

I will miss you...

I spoke to Anthony on the phone on Tuesday about buying his bike. I had never spoke to him before, but off all the people on this site I admire his posts the most. I told him that and he was sincerely grateful. His photos from Cambodia were deeply touching in particular. I was REALLY looking forward to finally meeting him at the Bozeman Yeti demo, and now I never will.

Here's a few memories I have of Anthony...

I had never met Anthony before I moved to Colorado, but I knew "of" him from my days in San Antonio. He had achieved sort of a revered status among a bike forum/community there. Before leaving on a trip to Denver to scout out the area, I PM'd Anthony and asked about meeting up for some rides. He took me up Chimney Gulch and down Apex and enchanted forest. I always think about that ride. It was a brisk morning in Golden and the newness of riding in the mountains made me giddy. The thought that those trails were going to be my home trails was really special and I was truly happy. I often search for that feeling when I ride, but I can't recreate it.

Later in the trip Anthony offered to take me on the Kenosha Pass to Breckenridge ride. It was only the two of us and after a 6-7 hour ride, I rode back with him in the car. We had never met before that trip and he was willing to share so much. On the return drive, my accelerator cable got stuck and we had no choice but to speed through fairplay. We were pulled over of course, but the marshall let us go when the car started throttling up on its own. We laughed and prayed that we would make it back to his trusty Xterra.

When I finally moved to Denver, I arrived a few days before New Year's. Anthony, true to the fashion that he demonstrated upon our meeting the previous Fall, offered for me to come over to his house for a small get together. It made me feel like I was home in a new place on what, otherwise, was surely to be a truly lonely night.

Anthony really inspired people. Of course no one is perfect in all things and to everybody, but the way he rode his bike, wrote his impressions and thoughts, took pictures, traveled, cooked, listened to music, read, etc. really made others try to emulate him and his ability to LIVE. I know I tried... That is something that is really special. He set a model that others aspired to learn from. To be an inspiration to others to help them find their passion certainly is a great way to live life.

I'll miss you Anthony. You're immortal in our thoughts and memories now.

I just never imagined those silly strands of tinsel would outlive you, anthony. I will never take them down.

I hope all his closest friends can get through this and come out the other side with the knowledge that their lives were more special for having known Anthony Vail Sloan.

I am sad beyond belief for someone I knew mostly through his words and pictures. He really inspired me to improve my photography but mostly he just inspired me to get out there and live life on my bike when ever I got the chance. We will all miss you Anthony.

What a tragedy. Never met him in person, but his photos and writings are one of the primary reasons I started riding again some 2.5 or 3 years ago. What a loss. Condolences to friends and family to be sure.

I almost cried in the middle of my classroom when my friend told me today.

I had the privilege of Anthony's friendship starting back in 2001. I have always said Anthony was not of this world. He was beyond kindness had such a presence everywhere he went. I rode with him countless times in Austin and when he moved to Colorado he generously opened his home for me to come ride the mountains. He always came back on his Yeti road trips and other races across Texas. Always hugging me. He was an amazing person and I am so fortunate to have known him. So lucky to have hundreds of pictures that he took on my rides in Colorado.

May he ride the heavens forever. Saddened beyond words.

So sorry to hear this. It makes no sense at all.
My thoughts go out to his family and friends. I knew him only a little, but I can echo
the sentiments I see here. Anthony has touched so many people ; he knew how to live in the moment. Quite a gift.

I never really met Anthony, maybe in passing at I-bike…
I never knew his background or persona
My co workers always spoke highly
I came upon Anthony’s web site only last week
His words and photos captured me
I never needed to meet Anthony
I feel like I’ve known him for a long time from his words and images
I will miss him

My deepest condolences to the Yeti crew and family

I feel in some way we are partners in-crime in our little Colorado bike world, life is just too short-

Take care all

I've been reading this post over the past 15 minutes, and I still can't believe it. Man, this is just unreal. RIP Anthony. Thanks for giving us so much in exchange of just a few words, that many, like me, posted here in awe for all your incredible pictures. Be sure you took all of us in every jorney you had. Only now, this jorney you will have to follow up by yourself, no pics, no posts, but we all gonna get there one day too, and then we will ride along again.

Never met you Anthony. Just spent 15 minutes reading over this thread. Left one hell of a good impression on people that's good enough in my book. Great pics. Ride on in the singletrack upstairs brother. Condolences to your friends and family,

I am so, so terribly sad and sorry to hear this. Man that just can't be.

I only met him once, but like others, I feel like I knew him through his beautiful images and passionate and inspired words. It seems cliche' but he really seemed to live life to the fullest and always gave back more than he took. His trip report to the Cambodia orphanage remains one of the most touching experiences of my life.

My sincerest and heartfelt condolences to his family and those who were close to him.

You will be missed, anthony. Ride on.

You OK, Dave?

Oh.

That is very sad news. If there was any person I wanted to meet someday and say thanks for all the words and visons of life and riding, it was he.

My condolences to those that knew and loved him, including Grendel.

Sigh.
