Modesto area

As the name says I am new to MB. I have a couple questions, the first is where to most of you ride that are in this area. I have been doing the Dry Creek Trails in Modesto. I have heard Knights Ferry is nice. I am not on an amazing bike...it is a 07 specialized hardrock, that I was loned to get me into bikes.

I am also considering buying a hardtail so I have my own. I want to be under $750 but would prefer to find a great deal and save a bit. I also do not want to buy a used bike.
29 or no 29? what are the benefits of a 29? What bike shops do you recommend? What bike brand also?

Is anyone looking for someone to ride with.

I have been riding a few weeks and I am riding 16miles, at 12MPH average.

Welcome to the area.

There are several ride options open to you, but most of the really good stuff is under snow right now. Red HIlls, Lake Hogan, and New Melones are all great fairly local ride places you might want to try. Red Hiils is the most technical of the 3 and New Melones is the easiest. Knights Ferry is nice but really not a mountain bike place.

You're best bet is to hook up with the TROGS. There are several that post here or you can say hi on http://www.trogspace.com/forums/YaBB.pl
Also for local information try these two sites.

I'll leave the bike recommendations to others.

Hope to see you out there, Fiona

Hi New, I'm next door in Ceres. Fiona gave you some good pointers. Sign up on the Trog site and show up to ride.

Modesto area mountain biking is good and bad. The good is it's 1-4 hr drive to some of the best riding in the country. The bad is it's 1-4 hr drive to some of the best riding in the country. We carpool alot on the farther rides.

A couple of us try to ride Dry Creek on Monday nights with lights. We haven't been very consistant with that this winter. The DC trails get damaged too much during wet weather but Red Hills gets better the wetter.
