08 Enduro

well I got rid of my 07 stumpy and purchased an 08 enduro comp sl white/orange.

any likes/dislikes. things to watch out for? I love the look and feel of it. more comfortable then the stumpy. I have a feeling it'll be an excelent all mountain bike. the stumpy was awesome so this can only be better right? seems to weigh a few lbs more but oh well.

reason I switched was I wanted a little more plush ride for bombing down hills yet still be able to actually climb.

any enduro fans here?

I have the same bike. Setting it up to your personal likes is a bit tricky but once set up you'll love this bike. Check the air on the compression (right) side and make sure its set between 50 and 55. I'm tall 6'2" and I use an off set seat post to set me back a little. I love the bike although I have gotten myself in over my head on it.(It pulled me through most of the time.)
Enjoy

yeah I moved the seat back a little and it made a good difference. I spent a long time adjusting the sag. that should be really really close when I finally get it on a trail. compression and rebound should be somewhat close but that changes for every trail...

brakes and shifters are in perfect position.

I noticed there is another slot of the bottom of the rear shock. does this help to move it or just leave it alone?

anyone running bigger then the 2.3 tires?

I have the shock in the low/slack (most rearward) position, and haven't had any trouble climbing. If I were doing 30+ mile rides on a regular basis, I might consider he more XC position.

I have been running a 2.5 Weirwolf in the front and a 2.35 Nevegal in the rear. I'm pretty happy with this combo, and have been pretty amazed with the amount of abuse they have taken without getting a flat. I thought for sure I would flat at Downieville last month, but nothing.

I have used 2.6 Kenda Kenetics front and rear for DH in mud with no tire problems.

Look at the front fork, set it to max extension and the rear shock to the rear position for a nice light DH machine.

Go the other way and run the fork at the min and the shock in XC for a tight single track XC machine

My prefered do all setting is the front fork at the Min marks and the rear shock in the DH slot for the extremly technical Single Track I ride.

Seems like you got your SL for the right reasons (i.e. enjoyed the Stumpy but now want a more aggressive ride). Quite a few people on this board with SL's, you'll find all the info you might need here. Be sure to check out some of the useful stuff on suspension setup and maintenance posted by "kelstr" and "Speci-Suspension Tech" (and the whole 5-year warranty story that came about largely thanks to the efforts of "Lipps64").

As for your tire question, I run 2.5 Minions (DHF/DHR) with no problems, although Maxxis sizing is on the small end, so they are in effect not a lot bigger than the original 2.35 Resolutions that came on mine (07 Comp). I have made a bunch of other mods as well, because I ride mine pretty hard (rims, brakes, chainguide etc....). A great all-rounder that is up for some fun as well.

As for the suepension set up, I run the shock in the DH position exclusively (i.e. the most rearward hole, which gives the lowest BB height). It still climbs well enough, and rips on the way down.

Enjoy your new ride, and don't forget to post up a pic!

my next question was going to be the front fork adjustment. right now the ride height is in the middle. guess i'll just move it to the max.
i'll get pics up as soon as I can get to a real computer instead of my cell phone I'm on now.
I can't wait to go bomb some hills!!

i still have a soft spot for the enduro sl, i wanted to buy one but a friend of mine persuaded me to go for the sx trail, i may sell my epic frame and fork at the end of the year and get an 08 enduro and swap over all my light parts, the bike would be definately under 30 pounds but im afraid itll be too close to my SXT.

I am running the 2.5 Weirwolfs front and rear. Hardly bigger if at all from the stock Spesh tires that came on my '07. They are also MUCH better tires. Currently I am running in the slack position up front with no problems, but find that I am doing more XC than bombing. Might try the front position and see what it does for me.

Either way, you're gonna love that bike.

My riding buddy did EXACTLY what you did, Camaro Dave. Went from an 07 Stumpy to an 08 Enduro. He absolutely loves it. Now he's even faster.

I did the same thing.
Went from '07 stumpy comp to the '08 enduro sl comp white&orange..
Since then:
It gives me soooo much confidence{sometimes a bit too much...},even my riding buddies noticed the difference, speciallly on the downhill sections..
I'm riding a lot loosely,I know she'll save me..
Is anybody converted the original tires into tubeless?
Mostly I'm doing technical singletrack and my weight is around 150 pound.
I would do it to shave off some weight.
Any ideas?

cool pics.

I rode up a paved bike path (about 7 miles) then did a little tiny trail. like 2 minutes worth. not very long. but I did notice it rides just about the same on pavement even in the spots where its fairly steep. the thing stops really fast for having brand new brakes. my stumpy had to break in for a few miles. it sure is a lot more plush on the dirt! I really cannot wait till saturday to go bomb some big stuff!
anyone weigh about 180 w/ gear and everything riding these? just wondering what you have your shocks air pressure at.

I'm about the same and I have about 205 in the shock. Mostly hard XC stuff and I use most of the travel.

What do you mean by the right side and left side numbers?
Left side is height/travel adjust and right side for Compression and Rebound...

Jeep.. he's talking about the air pressures in each side. On the bottom of each fork leg is a valve. One side is the Positive Air (Spring) side and the other the Negative (Compression). The Positive should be about 100-150lbs depending on your weight and the Negative should be about 50-55lbs. The Negative Shrader can be accessed by using a wrench to remove the nut cap. The Positive side has the standard Shrader cap on it.

Hope this helps.

well took the bike on a good ride yesterday. as I expected it doesn't climb as well as the stumpy. but most of that issue is I'm outa shape. and at first the DH was really bouncing me around. messed with the suspension a little and it ROCKED. it sure is a fun bike!

I need to let some air outa the rear shock. it seemed stiff. I can tell a big difference in this bikes rear suspension design compared to my 07 stumpy. seems harder to compress it...

I love the look of the bike but I think different color wheels would make it more unique. anyone know who makes like orange or yellow wheels that'll fit this huge axle?

Spinergy's fit with a bit of modification. Do a search to figure out how. They have white, yellow, and red spoked wheels available. If you ask me how to do convert that front wheel. I will make fun of you and not tell you. I promise.

Camaro_Dave, Did you try reducing the travel in the front to 110mm when climbing? It helps a bit. I don't do it anymore as for me, this bike climbs amazingly even using the full 150mm

yeah i reduced the travel. its probably just mostly me. seemed like i leaned too far back when climbing or something. the front end popped up a lot. i'll get used to it.

Dave, I don't know what they have in em for axles, but those new Iodine wheels from Crank Bros are a really cool shade of red- orange. Kinda pricey, but a sick lookin' wheel.

Who knows... If they make green ones in 29".....

hey dave I'm nyrr's friend. I did the same thing you did. Went from an 07 stumpy comp flat army green to and 08 enduro expert ano green. Still have the stumpy. Left the enduro at my LBS yesterday for some minor issues and rode the stumpy for the first time in a few weeks. I love both bikes and dont think I'm gonna part with the stumpy. The cockpit feels the same to me but both have a different ride. A difference I like. Both of these bikes have made me faster. I even promised myself that if I bought the enduro I'd quit smoking. 3weeks so far and doing good.
Did you have any problems with leaks in your triad? I tried to find a fox equivalent to put in there and have it pushed but couldn't get a definite answer from anyone.

my stumpy was perfect zero issue. only put 250 miles on it though. the traid seemed pretty nice to me. the enduro is gettin a little more loose now, in a good way. seems more plush and reacts better. I brought it to work and was flying down the concrete stairs (17 steps). no need to touch the brakes. felt like a dream! very impressed. rode it off a flat bed trailer but it was only about 3' off the ground. setup two 2x4 boards on a bucket, one for going up, other for going down. then rode over it. seemed a lot more easy then I thought it would ha ha, its not much to brag about but it was sweet and half way technical. so between all that and the small but super steep loose dirt hills and riding an awesome trail saturday the bike is feeling amazing! I love it. I need to wack an inch or two off the seat post though so I can drop it further when doing stunts.

are there 2 schrader valves on our E150? The setup video and my LBS didnt say anything about another fill valve. unless i skipped it. spec is sending a new cartridge fro my fork because it was making a wierd noise when you turn the rebound knob counterclockwise and then compress it. i read somewhere else there was another valve for neg press on the other leg.

yeah that other schrader valve is the spike valve...it needs to be set at 50-55psi....alot of times they come from the factory with 65-70 PSI which is wrong....it ruins the small bump sensitivity of the fork....and these settings of 55 psi comes from spec. so its not something I just pulled outta my ass....its thouroghly covered in alot of the forums here....

anyone know how much of the seat post is supposed to be in the frame of the bike? I'm wanting to cut it as much as possible.

i'm guessing around 3 inches?? does everyone else with an enduro have two holes towards the bottom of the seat post? would it be bad to cut right in the middle of one?

thanks

There's a little sight hole in the back of the seat tube. As long as you can see seatpost in it, you have enough.

You are wrong!

You need to have enough seat post in the frame that goes completely past the top most weld of the top frame tube. Anything less, you will be putting 100% of your body weight into one piece of tubing. Once your seatpost goes past the first weld, you now are spreading the weight into the triangle of the entire frame.

alrighty I think I'm good. I cut about 1 3/4" off and at an angle so the farthest forward part is like 1/2 inch shorter. makes quite a bit of difference with just that little bit.

its was kind of a lazy day at work. so we got the track-ho and built a table top maybe 4.5' tall and 10' across. nothin huge but it was fun!

Is that weight specific like the + pressure? I'll check it when i get it back from the shop.

Camaro! I just cut my enduro seatpost. It was the same exact post that came on my stumpy. see the line that says minimum insertion? as long as you have at LEAST that much inserted you will be fine. I'm 6' and i cut it just below that line and i have way more than i need in the seat tube with some room to drop it

Know what? In the case of my Stumpy, I'm NOT wrong. I checked the manual. It says exactly that. I just looked at the location of the hole and it's exactly where you say it should be. I was wrong in assuming if my Specialized had it, everyone's did.

I friggin' HATE people who have access to track-hoes AND who get to have lazy days at work to top it all off.

got a Kenda 2.5 thrown on the front. got some shin/knee pads. I ended up getting the specialized ones. tried the lizard skins and one other brand and these specialized were the most comfortable. they actually feel good when pedaling.

if this 2.5 tire works out good I think the only thing I'm going to do is get a bash guard and ditch the 3rd gear. anyone know which one is the best/easiest to install? and what all do I have to replace?

I really wanna post pics but I still haven't pulled out the camera. oh well. it looks like every other white/orange enduro

A bashring is easy to install, you just need to undo the four bolts holding your chainring on and replace the big ring with the bashguard. There are plenty of good bashrings out there from brands like MRP, e.thirteen, Raceface, Gamut, etc. It really just comes down to either which one you like the look of most or price!

There's an 08 Enduro Comp in white / orange at a local shop on sale here that I'm REALLY tempted to get. Still trying to decide between that and a Reign X. How are you enjoying your Enduro so far?

I love it! I took it to work for the week. I do construction in a different state then I live in. so I'm there 4-5 days out of the week. (not much else to do besides work and ride) our project is building condos. so we have a few acres of dirt we can play on. access to track-hoe to build jumps etc its a sweet ride. I know its probably not the BEST bike in the "all mountain" catagory but its the one that fit me the best and I like the looks. I would buy it again if I had the choice.

i'm almost positive my next bike will be a DH bike. I'm sure the enduro will handle my dh skills with ease though.

In my Opinion the enduro SL is one of the Best All mountain bikes....Its a Very Capable descender within reason and in some situations is fater than a DH sled...its lighter and more flickable.....Its jumps great as long as you have a good tranny and some finesse...I want A 2009 Demo 8II to compliment the enduro....your gonna find the enduro making u a better and more skilled rider....U still up for tomorow????....I get off at 1 pm and the park is open till 430...so give me a call and let me know..Im going up regardless

for sure. I might go up a little early and just dink around. I should have phone service everywhere on the mountain. but I can meet you at the ticket office at like 1:30-1:45 or so.

I agree with keeping the enduro and adding a demo that'd be awesome.

Hey sunYnelson! Got the rims from a place in Sydney call Bike Shed Mortdale. Those guys sell a lot of DH/FR stuff and have plenty of stock if you want to check it out:

http://tbsm.com.au/

It took it ages to find out what I wanted as most of the rims I saw were really heavy. I wanted something strong enough for the aggressive riding but light enough for XC which I enjoy a lot too.

This Halos are a great and I LOVE the look on the bike. Can’t stop looking at it!!!! The tyres look beefier as well as wider which I am sure will give me better handling.

It took me a lot of begging and time to the wife before she let me buy them… They just can’t understand why you need to upgrade components on a bike “specially when you pay over AU$4000 for it”

Anyway, very happy boy now and as for the back hub, I was going to give it a change but that was going to take me down few more bucks so decided to stick to it. I hope, I just hope I don’t regret it soon. The guys at the LBS checked it anyway and said it was in a very good condition still…. Fingers crossed.

any likes/dislikes. things to watch out for? I love the look and feel of it. more comfortable then the stumpy. I have a feeling it'll be an excelent all mountain bike. the stumpy was awesome so this can only be better right? seems to weigh a few lbs more but oh well.

reason I switched was I wanted a little more plush ride for bombing down hills yet still be able to actually climb.

any enduro fans here?
Here are both of my bikes dave. BTW just got my enduro back from my LBS today. they repaplaced the shock cartridge. I asked about the other schrader valve on the right fork leg and spoke to spec. they said thats a preset nitrogen charge and should not be changed unless the rider is extremely light ie twink/chick lol. Its main purpose is to keep the oil charge from foaming. anyway took it for a beating today and it rides great.

well I went on another great ride today. I love this bike more and more every time I ride it. it was a fun day NO CLIMBING went to sundance (utah). my rear shock did lose 10 psi (150 from 160) from last night... front didn't change.

I'm deffinately gonna save up for some nicer wheels. no issues with these yet. but I think yellow would look killer on my bike. I better hint to the wife for christmas.

all in all bike is freakin sweet. I just need to ride more!

so I went on a ride down af canyon last night. just on the pavement. I didn't touch the brakes hardly at all. now today my rear brake is making a terrible squealing noise. its bad. and there's sticky crap all over the rotor... I put brake clean on a rag and wiped the rotor off. I can squeaze as hard as I can and I can't lockup the rear brake.

any quick fix? I pumped the brakes a lot to make sure fluid was pumping.

Sounds like the seal in the caliper leaked brake fluid all over your rotor.

Avid Juicy 5's SUCK.....but I do have a brake bleed kit you can borrow.....its real easy....but before you bleed it u need to pull out the pads and clean em off with rubbing alcohol and also clean the rotor the same....or since you have a one year tune up thingy from mad dog I would just take it in and have them jerk with it....just tell em exactly what happened

If they fell mushy a bleed might fix them as long as they arent leaking. Ive got juicy 5's on my stumpy and had 7's on another bike. had the squeal problem once. if its not the fluid leaking try some auto brake cleaner and pull the pads and sand them on a flat surface. sand the rotors, clean both and put it all back together. always worked for me. if those pads are too contaminated just swap them out w/new. I had to put organics in my stumpy bc i was overheating them and glazing them over causing the brakes to suck. also had 2 pairs fall off the backin plate bc they were got so hot so if your doing alot of hard/frequent braking you might want the organic pads

I went in saturday to buy my own shock pump. for some reason yours would only work on the rear shock but not the fork?? don't know why. when I went in I told em it wasn't holding air so I'm taking the bike in monday to get the whole bike looked over. I'm betting the rear shock is just an o-ring on the shrader valve. it came loose once but I tightened it pretty good. so maybe it just got smashed wrong??

it hasn't leaked at bad the past 2 days.

if I get the brake working good you still up for sundance saturday? I kinda want to go friday and saturday

After Market Suspension

Have any of you enduro owners gone with any after market suspension. I love the specialized fork but am thinking of going with a fox float air in the rear and see how it works. I saw a guy with a boxxer on the front of his but that didn't make much sense.

Yeah the boxxer seems a little much for this bike but really intersted on a new rear shock.
