1984 Cook Bros. Bonzo Fury

Finally finished this one. One of the first 16 production Furys out of CBR It was an empoyees gift to his father. It was used but mostly as a commuter. It has seen some trails though. The bike spent most of its time in Arazona in a garage. Its mint but everything had to be cleaned. All the grease had turned to glue. Its all been torn down and rebuilt. I added the motorcycle levers and the turbo seat. It uses a bmx headset. It had a hatta alloy. I swapped it out for the more robust and trick hatta sealed bearing kongo. The grips are original. The original tires and seat are gone but I would have switched them out either way. Everythings era correct. Except for the new tires which are reissues of tires from late 80's. The frame, fork, bars, hubs, crank, and bottom bracket are all cooks. The rest is shimano's first top of the line quality mtb group. I also added the head tube decal. The bottom bracket and hubs had their bearings replaced with Phils. These are even the original cables too.
Its going to be like a trip back in time. This will hit the trail in the next few weekends hopefully.

I guess it about time for a follow up on the Fury. I added a modern Jandd Portage bag. I wanted a vintage strap butg could not find one and this one was almost free. It had the velcro mounts but I cut them off and drilled holes in the bags aluminum frame to line up with the frames braze ons. I also swapped pedals for something that had clips mounted to it. This has got to be the most fun I've had off road. When I first took it to the trails my mind was going in the direction of..... This thing is a beast. Its heavy. Has no shifting ramps. Its going to be slow. The gearing is so high. I was totally wrong. The Deer Head shifts flawlessly with the Suntour freewheel. There is slight hesitation when climbing and a shift is needed but not much. In fact climbing is the best part with this bike. Just sit down pedal and it climbs like a Mountain Goat (not the bike) At times I felt like I was coasting up hill. Incredible! I wish they still made these Oakley 3s. They are so comfortable. The leverage they create is like having bar-ends. I hope the current value of nos 3s drops from 150$+.The wide bars took some getting use to with narrow trails. After hitting the bars ends on a few trees, I was use to it. Its very stable in fast steep descents are very stable allowing me to go faster than on most of my bike. There is nothing for me to complain about with this ride. Oh, Well maybe about that little floating plate that the cable attaches to on the rear derailleur. I guess the was the precursor to Shimano's floating upper pulley? Either way just a little play in the rear shifter is not bad. Its too bad more of these were not made or sold.
Here are some more detail shots I added after my first ride but never posted.

Great bike. There is a deerhead RD that does not have that weird mounting point. I forgot what it was that that did...

Wow!

Fantastic work CKev! I dig the brown and cream color scheme.

I hope you put a few rides on it for good measure.

Palos? It looks like it (white gravel trail in the background). It's funny how you end up missing things that you take for granted when they're in your back yard (although I absolutely DON'T miss the weather you're about to get ).

Great bike, I love those bars and wish I could find some (that I can afford) for my singlespeed.

Thanks . Werent there three versions? This one. The super plate which I have no idea what its purpose was. Then the one like mine with no "play" plate. No?

Thanks, I didn't dig the tan at first but its growing on me. I like the clean look but I love the old headbadge. I'm working on getting a repro cbr fork flag for this too. Nothing else.

Thanks. No wall hangers here. I restore to ride. I have no room for displays. This was the only bike I rode this summer. It was so much fun when I would come blasting past some dude geared up on their full sus. zoot up hill with my suede pumas and cargo shorts. I might have snuck the FRO out once to check some new changes though. It has about twenty sessions on it since the rebuild.

Yup those are the Palos horse trails. Closest point to the car so I could get my camera and get some shots with a nice background. Bike has enough weight with out a rack and a camera bag. I use to want to go to all kind of different riding spots but then I just figured. Hell. Its 10 miles from home and there is no way I've ever covered all the trails there.
Its a cold one today. 70º yesterday 42° today. SanDiego is the place for me. The wifie says otherwise.
Those bars are pretty rare. I've only seen three. I have two.

Not that there is anything wrong with wall hangers. Its just that I use to have bikes that I loved to look at but they rode like crap or were to mint and I was afraid to damage. I got to the point of 22 bikes and decided that if I wont ride it it has to go. I am down to 12 and I have 3 that I'm on edge about. I just wanted to clear that up. Dont want to offend anybody or come off as elitest or anything.

Oh not at all. To each his own. I feel similar about it to the way you do. Makes sense to me.

I think it is completely awesome that you ride it and can thus appreciate the nuances of the handling both uphill and downhill. Thanks for posting the ride report as most of us here will never get chance to ride on of these rare beasts, much less have ownership of one. Somehow looks even better with a little dirt on it imho

Awesome bike and glad to hear that it rides well!
I'm a shameless wall-hanger-owner and my bikes are actually dusty from just hanging around and not dirty from hitting the trails...
What color are your suede Pumas?

Don't know what to say, you are at the mercy of Ckevlar to repost now. I have seen the photo's and they are cool. This is why my computer at work is full of files like: Dirt drop, Ritchey, Roller cams, Cook Bros. etc.... A little reshuffling of someones photobucket account and Bam.....If you haven't already saved them, they are gone. Thanks to all who post photo's here regularly.......
