The Dewey Bridge on highway 128 burned down last night

i was driving home (i live in grand junction) from moab last night after a day of hiking and i couldn't believe my eyes when i saw the dewey bridge burning down

http://www.gjsentinel.com/blogs/cont...ey_bridge.html

i got some pictures, it was just unreal

this was a pretty historical bridge for those of you who aren't familiar, and i believe it was currently being used by the kokopeli trail

Here is the story from KSL. Crazy
http://www.ksl.com/index.php?nid=148&sid=3025799

A historic bridge on state Route 128 near the Colorado River has burned down.

Grand County police say a boy playing with matches on Sunday caused the fire. They say he started a brush fire at a campground that moved up the riverbank and destroyed Dewey Bridge.

The suspension bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was built in 1916 and was the state's longest bridge without supports in the waterway it crossed.

Wow. That actually makes me very sad. That bridge held some pretty powerful symbolism for me.

!! No way!! That is horrible.

If you watch the film Vanishing Point, the bridge was in there for a scene.. So sad.

This is very sad. I'm from SE Utah. I took a photo of my wife on that bridge two years ago. I'm glad I have a record of being there.

I first drove across Dewey Bridge in 1980, when it was still the only way to cross the river. What a great loss to the local history.

skez, your photos are very dramatic. Thank you for your contribution. You may be the only one to have recorded it for others to see.

I almost always use 128 when I go to Moab, Seeing the Dewey bridge has always been a sign that I'm almost to there and going to have some fun. I've actually only ridden the bridge once. That was last year when I rode from Fruita to Moab.

I hate to make light of the tragedy, but you could have sold those pix to the news for good money. Those are great photojournalism photos.

It's a bummer.

Gonna be really hard crossing the river now when doing the kokopelli trail..

Well, maybe. If the parents were irresponsible enough to leave matches where a seven-year-old could get to them, then leave the child unsupervised next to a swollen river, there might be some parenting issues. The GJ Sentinel article says 'charges pending'.

Against the parents, I hope.

This is so surreal. I drove past about 2:00PM. I wish I had needed to stop and take a leak at the pullout there.

It is pretty early in the year for brush fires...

That is a total bummer. I drove over that bridge the first few times I went to Moab in the early 80's. I even have pictures of my '78 Jeep Cherokee with the bikes on top going over it. This was just before they built the new one. Bummer !

I have a pic of my family on the bridge in 1973 when I was ten in our new BMW. We were on spring break, and had Arches and Deadhorse to ourselves. That bridge will be missed, but to rebuild it is a mistake (it'll never be 92 years old again). Charge the parents with child neglect and general stupidity.
