I've gotten a couple people wondering if they can register through myself or any other methods other than Active.com Yes you can. Please email me and I'll sign you up and once you get into town you can sign the waiver and pay the race fee. The snow is setting up real nice so get those bikes ready. You can also call Cycles of Life at 719 486 5533 on Saturdays or Tennessee Pass Nordic Center at 719 486 1750 whatever is easier. Spread the word....

Really, really considering this.
Anyone want to carpool up from the front range? I can easily meet along I-70 (I'm in Morrison) or if I drive I can fit another bike on top, assuming a 100 mm fork, I have a trunk rack that another pugsley with a 135 mm fork can go on(hope the roads aren't too cruddy though).

Any info on distrance? 25 miles? 50 miles? 10 miles?

Depending on weather I might be interested in going out for another lap afterwards or checking out the other courses a little. I'm hoping to get in 5 hours of riding, even if that means going back out when I get home.

This weekend's course is 11 miles long and packing down real nice. Wait till you see the downhill. Its filled with jumps and berms....surrounded by powder.
We look forward to seeing everyone this weekend.

GET PSYCHED!

11 miles total? Or per lap? How many laps?

Interested (especially in the descent!), but wouldn't consider traveling that distance for, um, that distance.

Any info is appreciated.

Any input as to what setup is going to work the best? I was wandering about studded tires, reg. tires with lower pressure, snow bike, etc.
Thanks in advance for the input.

with the snow we have, it will be 1.5-2 hours of riding. For it to pack real well it needs alot of continious packing. If it snows before the race, it will be a good workout. Depends on rider weight and tires too.

11miles total. 1 lap. The jumps and berms are made out of the terrain and winddrifts with a lot of help from the local slednecks; a bunch of rollers to double. Much more to explore after the race if you need more. Most of us will be drinking beer and stranahans afterwards.............

I rode the course today after work starting at 4pm. My set up was a Karate Monkey with 2.5 Weirwolfs with 33x20 single speed set up. I was running 32psi. Everything went great. At 10am the course will be much harder packed. If you have a snowbike you'll be psyched. If you don't use your widest tires and rims. The course is getting packed down by sleds and a roller everyday and will be packed down the morning of the race. We haven't gotten any snow yet this week and it looks like its going to be the same for the rest of the week. The sun helps pack down the trail too.

Its sunny and cloud free in Leadville right now. The best way to forecast the weather here is to look out the window

No doubt, especially in the mountains but I've been an inveterate weather watcher since I was knee-high to a fly so I can't help but look.

By the way, that snowy forecast only makes it more enticing for me. Last year was beautiful and sunny, maybe add a little excitement and challenge this year with some snow and blow.

Well, I'm out now. After leaving at 7 I caught horrible skiing traffic, made it to Floyd Hill at 8 so I bailed. It would've been pretty iffy on whether I could get to Leadville, register, change, and get the bike set up before 10. Dang that was some bad traffic, I was in 5 miles of gridlock before I turned around; I totally should've left at 6.

I won't make the next one, but I should be able to do the March 1st race, looking forward to it.

Hey D Man! Thanks for passing the libations, you made a new convert at the table in my crew. You're right it was a great day for a little snow play. The course had all the classic snowbike elements: noO2, cold, sun, hard pack, soft pack and knee deep slogs. It doesn't get any better.

Here's what I recorded at the race. Your data looked a little funny around the start of the 2nd loop, taking a little sight seeing trip there were you?

Hugh kudos to Sterling and ALL the help and sponserships from so many locals.

Leadville rules.

Wink too much?

i don't know about TOO MUCH Mr. Fixie!!!

although, when the mileage is 1/2 of what a usual xc race is, yet your time (my time) is twice that of the xc races, one really has to wonder.

it was fun yelling at you from behind for a little while today, Mr. Fixie!! ;-)

stellar job EDEMTBS, PIVAAAYYY, DAVEFix, EBENESQ, TOMP, MISSIONMAN, (no, you cannot have my hat), DOGDUDEduce, and all you other hot rock stars out there ;-)

JSD303 -- wtf!?!? we thought we'd see you at the after party.

I have to say, this race was EXTREMELY well run! The course was awesome. The people who oragnized are brilliant ... and just simply down to earth and neat to be around. VERY fun day everyone!

Marni, get better so we can ride.

Erin, you rock!

Great seeing you Dave! Lots of fun!

What a great course this year, the downhill sections were a hoot. I left some nice face-plant divots in the deeeeep powder

woohoo snow

Tons of fun in beautiful weather! Looking forward to the next one. Plus a lot more climbing than I was expecting which was good. Although I made a lot of divots on the DH's I'd do it again any day

So great seeing all of you friends today and making new ones, sometimes winter becomes a sort of solitary endeavor and this was a nice break.

I left my house near DTC at 6:15am and didn't get to the Leadville start line til around 10:30am... The whole drive up was a parking lot... I kept convincing myself that any second I'd get to the accident that had stopped my progress, but it didn't really let up til after Copper. Super frustrating drive topped off by Google Maps telling me to take 24West instead of East and making me another 20minutes later while I drove out of Leadville... My first trip to Leadville was not a total loss... donated my race fee to the cause and then went on a ride on the Mineral Belt Trail for a nice ride (thanks to the suggestion of one of the wonderful race helpers). Sorry I missed the race and had to bail afterwards to hang with the in-laws on their surprise visit. There were so many great people out there, I was bummed I didn't get to hang out and get to know everyone more.

leadvegas and everyone else that worked so hard to put on a fun event - thank you! I'm looking forward to the next 4hour drive to Leadville for Race #2... I'll just be smarter next time and leave at 5am!

Pictures of my ride in Leadville below:

Terry-

Here's the info off of the flyer:

Feb 9 Tennessee Pass Night Jam:
Bring your headlights to Tennessee Pass Nordic Center for a fast race through the woods at Ski Cooper. Register/Check-In at the Nordic Center 5 pm. Race starts @ 7pm.

For more details call: Tennessee Pass Nordic Center 719-486-1750, Cycles of Life 719-486-5533, or Sterling @ 719-486-5533.

I'll probably be there with a few friends to add to the women's class. You can also email Sterling. He sent me a very good description last time. sterlingmudge@gmail.com

I might drop him a note to update this thread, so we don't all email him. I highly recommend you come to the race. It was extremely well organized last time with a search and rescue snowmobile almost every 5 feet it seemed. Snow races are cool. Night races are even cooler. Add them together and you get a festival of pimpnastiness.

Encouraging you of course...

Don't worry about a slog. I think Sterling and the crew have their heads very much in the right place when it comes to setting up a realistic and safe race in the snow.

This maybe more than you want to know but no one is making you open the link! This is the GPS data from last years night race. The average finish time was around 1:20. I won't be able to make this years night fiesta, hope it's another great one!

BTW, in a multi-loop race everyone finishes behind the leader. If you get lapped then you get to finish early!

Saturday's course looks to be a good one. The crew has been working hard buffing out the trails. A lot of thought went into this year's course taking into consinderation what happened last year and the snow conditions. That being said here is the course description. Sorry it came so late.

The race will start at the Nordic Center going uphill on the Cooper Loop past the Cookhouse then down the super steep trail named The Griz. We'll take a left on Larry's Loop torwards the 10th Mtn. Memorial. We'll pop out on to the road and head back up to the Nordic Center where we'll zoom down the wide open meadow to a sharp left turn onto Larry's Loop, then a right onto the Woods trail to the 10th Mtn. back to the Memorial out on to the road and back up to the Nordic Center finishing with a quick descent through the meadow.
trailmap.jpg

The best part of this route is that we only cross our tracks once for a distance of about 50 ft. Total course length is 7 miles with an expected finishing time of 1:15.

There will be a free pasta dinner served up after the race along with some wine and beer!

We hope to see you there!

Totally right. This event was too much fun. Where else can you get an awesome, well run race and a kick a$$ dinner with booze PLUS prizes and a raffle for $20? If you're thinking about coming out for the last race on March 1st, do it!!!

Kudos to Sterling, et al, RE: Tennessee Pass Nite Jam

By far THE BEST course layout, and overall organizational effort in my ten years of racing in the LWMBS night races. Job well done! Even though I'm too old to be a place winner, it's good to get out and keep the field honest. Looking forward to Mineral Belt Mayhem. Will train as weather and grandkids permit.

4th Snow Race Planned for Late March '08

Did I hear someone say they wanted another crack at Tennessee Pass Nordic Center's Trails, during the afternoon, as well as a post race BBQ on the deck with a million dollar view? Ty and Roxanne Hall heard you and will host the 4th and final race. Times and date to follow soon.
Thanks to everyone who has supported this fun series!

Some info about this weekend's race. First bike race ever on Leadville's Mineral Belt Trail. The course will be an 11 mile loop around town on a groomed trail. Registration for the race is at 8am at Cycles of Life at 504 Harrison Ave. (719) 486-5533 Race starts at 10am.

Since it is SkiJoring Weekend in town; Harrison Ave. is closed due to 2 ft of snow and 9 ft high jumps. The best way to get to the bike shop from I-70 will be to take a left on E 11th St. right after passing the Family Dollar store, go up one block and take a right on Hemlock St. Continue on Hemlock St. until E. 6th St. Take a right for two blocks and park. Walk down to Harrison Ave. and take a left. Cycles of Life is located at 504 Harrison Ave. Between E. 5th St. and E. 6th St. right next to a great coffee shop called Provin' Grounds.

Feel free to call Cycles of Life at (719) 486-5533 if you need directions.

Don't worry about any floods happening while you're here. We'll all be safe and sound.

Fantastic Race!

Excellent event and I leared a few good lessons:

1. Take notes from Sterling and the gang on how to put on an awesome event

2. Check the weather *really* good before the event

3. Ask the locals on how #2 *really* impacts snow quality

4. If you are 230lb's and running Nokian Extreme 29er's...go directly to the finish and help with timing!

Truly though, exceptionally beautiful day out on the snow above Leadville and I'd highly recommend the 4th race to anyone who would like to visit Leadville and take part in a fun snow biking event.

(Disclaimer - please read above lessons, especially #4!)

Keep up the fantastic work Sterling & Crew!

Allen (my time of 2:30 was a nice touch!)
