A Little Vacation

So when the pace of life spins up towards redline, it is always prudent to take a little time off. Take a break. Get away from it all. And seeing as how it is October, Moab (yes, Moab) is a sensible refuge.

The residents of the Casa de MTB loaded up and headed west with disarming nonchalance. A prudent stop in Fruita for a variety of hydraulic sandwiches, and zip! Pop! We were once again wrapped up in the velvety folds of the Zion Curtain.

Orders of Operation.

1) secure campsite. (within 10 minutes doing this we were offered money for our spot)

2) Ride.

A little bit of a self portrait. Any thing more than that and the camera breaks and I don't wanna break any cameras.

So we repaired to the local Brewery, rallied the troops, introduced everyone to each other and had a fine meal.

The next morning we woke up bright eyed and bushy tailed ready for a big ol' ride. Today's menu consisted of a little shuttle...

That took us up to Winter.

forgive me, a little product placement there.

After a small bit of kerfuffle and a near shattering of the group, we rejoined, all smiles, and proceeded to follow in the footsteps of Alexander Von Humboldt and work our way down some vegetation zones.

And life was, to put it succinctly, good. Aside from a tiny, stupid and incongruously hideous spill on the lower skirts of P.R. it was a fantastic ride.

We all agreed that riding bikes was just hills of fun and that we should all get together to do it again someday. So we did. The next day....

This day's ride took place in a whole different season. Gone were the skeletal trees and indifferent skies. Sun, Warmth, Sleeveless jerseys were the order of the day.

We wandered through the desert for hours. Stopping only to drop in at an ancient Nabatean Kingdom for some shrewd barter of Frankincense and Myrrh.

And of course we viewed the scab..

And there it is. We reravelled the shuttle, had a fabulous snack session of olives, prosciutto, Hummus, dark chocolate, broccoli and Warsteiner and everyone went home. Some by bike, some to Colorado, some to New Mexico. Dispersal. But all for a good cause.

I thought your work was a vacation. Seems like you'd want to go sit behind a desk when you got some time off from the "salt mines".

Absolutely uber-adequate images you got there. Time for new wall paper.

I can't compete with anthonys pictures, but here is a different shot of our crew rolling the slot on LPS. He was the only one brave enough to try it.

Did the Geek make it? I wouldn't be surprised if he did.

Anthony and IG, me = jealous. Next time, boys. next time.

Nah, he was just the only one in the group dressed for trying it... further confirming the adage: clothes don't make the man.

Awesome post

This is one of the best pics / threads in a while. Thanks for all of the great pics.

What you have out west is completely different from what we have here in Ga. Being able to see that far is just amazing. While I wouldn't trade my N. Ga. singletrack for what you have, I am definitely needing a vacation in your part of the U.S. to enjoy it for a while.

(Check out Anthony's pics from the Middle East on his site.)

'Specially when you peer closely at the picture and scale onto things by realizing that there's a guy sitting in the doorway.

But it's all true. That's been a fixture of Mo'ab for time out of mind. It's just down the road from here:

I... need... to... go back to Moab. Hopefully I can get enough $ together to go this spring... but probably not if I buy that new fork I've been lusting after... and I must say that the last 3 shots are of my favorite trail in all of Moab, or maybe anywhere. Thanks for including them...
