Is that an 08' Specialized Stumpy Pro in the first pic? Somebody must have the inside hook-up.
That in fact is the 29er stumpy in the pic. Specialized had lots of demo bikes, including the Stumpy Pro, Epic and others.
Had to drive all the way back from Oakridge tonight, so sorry for the late pics. All my action shots came out a little blurry, but here is some scenery.
And thanks to all the hard work from Randy and the crew to put together a fabulous weekend.
Looks like Norcal MTBR was well represented in the official photographs. Swiped these from the website, but there are many more that may be worth seeing, including pictures of my tent.
No that photo is actually from half way down Lawler. Sure looks a lot like Heckletooth though.
I just rode MRT with the MTBR crew today. They are on their way back south now. Poor buggers have got a long drive ahead of them, but it was sure worth it!!
MRT was WET!! Still, we got to enjoy Sahalie, Koosah and Blue Pool in all their splendor, and still had fun. What a great group. You're all welcome to come up here and enjoy our trails any time. We still have plenty more to show you
Boyd
P.S. That was me on the 29er Stumpy. I loved the ride. Just a pity about the BB height, which didn't really work on Middle Fork with all the roots and rocks. Other than that, it was great. Thumps up to Specialized for having the best Demo program I've seen in a long time.
Eighteen of us Norcalers are here in a Mackenzie River Hotel setting up to do some more riding tomorrow.
Thanks for the best time EVAR!!! The Middle Fork ride is the the best in my riding history.
We'll be back. We're still here. Maybe we'll stay.
francois
Conversation with francois Saturday night.
shiggy: How was the Middle Fork?
francois: BEST TRAIL EVER!
shiggy: Yup, one of our better rides.
francois: Why didn't you invite me up here sooner?
shiggy: I did.
francois: Why didn't you tell me the trails were so good?
shiggy: I did.
francois: Why didn't you insist we come?
shiggy: I did. And I have come down to ride your trails several times over the years.
francois: Now I understand why you seemed so ho-hum when we took you on them! Are there any other trails around here as good as the Middle Fork?
shiggy: (I name 8-10 of the top of my head) You really need to ride Tire Mountain tomorrow (francois bailed on that one because of a little rain--best group EVER!).

Today I did Twins (to the top), down the backside to Lemmish Lake, back to Charelton Lake, eastside of Waldo and up Betty Lake today--solo--everyone else bailed because of the mist and/or MRT. Perfect tread conditions! ~29 miles of flowy singletrack

Hope the cool crew had fun at MRT.
Nice to see Plim and Fiona represented. NorCal MTBR was definitely well represented on this ride. All knew about us.
I was noticing those looked like my shoes in the picture above. I just pulled up my pants legs and damm... I do have a scratch on my left leg I didn't notice! I thought the itch was from the wasp bite just below it.
Oh, and I'm so glad I didn't bail from the rain on Sunday, conditions were tacky perfect and the rain cleared. I got a clue when I saw more guides than people on the bus. THEY knew it was going to be good riding.
I've got a card full of pictures as always. I'll post later.

We headed back after riding Sunday, but a big thanks to you, Wes, Cheri, and the rest of the guides for making my weekend.
What's this "we" cr@p, ya damn foreigner?!? Great to see you, Boyd. Safe journeys to you.
Thank you, all you NorCal'ers, for coming up and partaking in the splendor of our playground. If it weren't for you, all us guides wouldn't have had all the meals, beer, shuttles, and great people to ride with!
Looking forward to seeing more pics.
Albee loves you! (and it's not just the pinot noir talking....)
p.s. Wanna hear something crazy? Middle Fork isn't even in my top 10 of local trails!

Nope. You're describing Larrison Rock, and Larrison Creek. This trail is the opposite direction from Oakridge, closer to Eugene.
I knew it started with an L......thx Sasquatch.
Yah, we did Creek in the morning, wanted to go up in the evening to do the Rock, but shig took us out on an extended Heckletooth epic during the day, we didn't have it in us after that.....
So here's some teaser photos. I'll write a bigger article.
Last year, I missed this event since I was on Vitamin Vicodin. People I trusted said I missed some really, really good trails.
Well, I got myself north of the state border and had a grand time. These are some of the best trails and the best people EVAR!!! <-- you'll hear that a lot.
Here's a taste:
The Law
A major crash in the group
Aussie Bob
JeffH on Hardesty trail
Noah with a trailside tattoo
Dan51
There were a few scenic bridges
Personalized box lunch
Mtbr tent in the rain
A little accident with the keg tower
Boyd leading the charge
Nick on the lava
Ho hum
Wes and Boyd saying 'Thank you, come again mate!'

The second pic in Ebrider's post is of Boyd's "special rider mating." Pretty sure he meant to say "meeting" in order to talk to us about the x-tinsion. As one of the few ladies in the group, I was relieved.
Hey, great event. Really well organized from my perspective and I loved the eco-friendly aspects of it-- no disposable wares for the meals etc. Plus, the riding was extraordinary, especially Middle Fork.
While in the lunch line, Chum politely asks Bob (I think that was his name) the guide with shoulder length curly hair, "So, what kind of tires should I run in this weather?"
At that point I kind of tuned out because Chum started rattling off different kinds of tires he thought might be appropriate given the night's deluge.
Without hesitation and with much disdain, Bob said, "**** that. I don't talk tire."
Then and there, I knew Bob was a man after my own heart. Rensho's too.
Ogre and I just got back home. Thanks to Randi, Porter and crew!!!! It ROCKED just as much as last year. Can't wait to attend next year. Maybe we'll ride MRT dry. We're planning on North Umpqua River afterwards.

Just finished unpacking the car, and staring to wash the very wet riding clothes...
Another amazing MBO experience - topped last year, and that was the "best rides EVAR" then... Some quick thoughts (maybe I'll write up an official ride report if others don't cover enough)
- Alpine in the rain was like being in a dream - riding through the green forest in the mist, singletrack disappearing around a corner into the clouds...
- The Lawler + Hardesty double shuttle was a great addition this year. Two singletrack descents that just didn't stop.
- The guides were numerous, helpful, and extremely friendly. Their enthusiam to show off their trails and for us to have a good time came across strongly from every one I talked to.
- Poor Noah: in case you haven't figured it out, look closely at his pic above (big guy, green shirt). Doesn't that mark look a little like a certain bike part? Well, it is a fresh trailside brand from his rotor - just imagine the story about how he got that... And last year, he also got to be on the "Heckletooth Death Ride"... maybe he shouldn't go back to MBO, but he was smiling the whole time both years.
- An even better organized event this year. While some groups experienced a few glitches, the NorCal group lucked out in that we had (mostly) trouble-free rides. The rain on Sunday put off a lot of people, as evidenced by all the cancelled or empty shuttles - but I think they just missed out on different and equally good rides.
- Speaking of rain... we had a self-organized, bonus NorCal "Liquid Sunshine" group of 17 riders, 1 jogger + 2 Oregon guides that showed up, head out on Monday on the McKenzie River Trail in the pouring rain. While the first 1-2 hours of slogging down the trail were a little miserable, once I was completely soaked through to my underwear and socks, and covered in mud, I gave into the situation, and ended up having a lot of fun.

That's a perfect description of the ride. I was feeling the same way each time I rolled up to Carmine in the van. She was gracious enough to offer us several bailouts with a dry, heated vanride, but I just was enjoying the ride too much.

The first ride, I remember seeing jdubsl2's huge grin at the bottom of Larison Rock on thursday evening. I told him to just wait until the weekend rides. I don't think it dissapointed. JustJeff summarized the rest of the weekend perfectly.
Chum summed it up pretty good to me: (paraphrasing) "in three days, you've been shot at, fell off a cliff, rode soaking wet for 4 hours and it was 3 of the best rides EVAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
It was nice to spend time riding with my MTBR buddies and making new friends. I got a head cold on the drive up and it has now turned into a chest cold but I tried to make the best of the situation. I really enjoyed the riding I was able to do and I look forward to going again and trying more of the trails!! Thanks to Aussie Bob, Big Larry and Fiona for the Salmon Creek adventure!!
The MBO gang really know how to put on a spectacular event, Great Job!!!
Thanks for everyone that came, sorry about the rain in the end.
I might have a couple pics. I was having too much fun to stop and take many though. I have to say... Middle Fork is still my favorite, but Tire Mountain in the mist/ rain was a blast. Lawler/ Hardessy were fun but a distant third for me. It was great getting out there and riding two new (to me) trails and hitting Middle Fork again.
Middle Fork... the pictures just don't do it justice.
I'm so glad I was able to make this trip after all.
High Points
A good MTBR NorCal turn-out
Nice weather, even the rain on Sunday turned out to be good for Alpine
Smooth operation by MBO
Carpool with EBrider and his sweet rig
Lawler and Hardesty were a BIG delight for me - a super roller coaster
Sarah finally getting up and riding after the nasty head banging at the bottom of Lawler
Fiona finding my mongramed knife that was knocked out my pocket by the roots on Salmon Creek
Noah's "Rotor" branding. When I first saw it, I wondered why he gave himself a rotor tattoo.
Infinite amounts of New Belgium Beer
Justin being super funny when wasted
The shuttle picking us up at the bottom of Alpine so we didn't have to ride back through town this time
0gre and Fiona's Troll House cookies - a new batch every night
Fun times with all at MBO!!!
AND....THE RIDING IN OREGON!!!!!!
I also must say I was impressed by the smooth running by MBO. A few of the many things gone right:
* Hot showers with timely shuttles
* Adequate food provided at the right times, cooked and served by Oakridge volunteers
* Lots of guides on every ride
* Use of radios this year to help when things don't go right
* Excellent Shuttles with bikes wrapped in blankets on trucks
* Lunch makings provided, with water and energy drinks provided at convenient locations
* Lots of advisors to help guide people on what to do
* Excellent T-shirts
* More new rides that are super, like Lawler and Hardesty double-shuttle rides
* Adequate "Honey-Buckets"
* So many things went smooth, there was nothing to complain about. But I'm sure it was a lot of work and planning that made it all work. It was a very pleasant weekend with lots of riding and riders to share it with.

God I'm bummed I missed this! But gotta say, one of the fondest memories I have in all my years of mountain biking was riding McKenzie River Trail a few years ago in the pouring rain soaked head to toe. The trail was essentially one long puddle. EPIC!!

Hey Randy. Just got home an hour ago. Great time once again in Oakridge. Many thanks to yourself, Paula, Porter, Ben, Tom, and the many volunteers (Travis drives a mean bus) who make this such a killer event. And most importantly, the Disciples of Dirt. Boyd (cyborg), Wes, Abe (Gabe), Cheri, Albi, Shiggy, and all the others who give their time to the trails and then show us the goods. Many thanks again. I left for Bend on Sunday morning and had three terrifics days of riding. Did the Bachelor to Bend ride on Monday afternoon during a huge rain storm. 28 miles of sweet singletrack. Ran into Craig and Ina (mtbr's from Vancouver) this morning on the Deschutes river trail. Finished that with an 8 hour drive home. Life is good... Kudo also to Brock and Bob (bobcanride) from DOD. Bob really likes to ride his bike.
Hi Tom. It was nice to meet you and the many other Norcal Mtbr's at MBO. Hope Sarah is doing well. That was a scary episode. Cheers.
Ebo, nice to meet you as well. Those trails are tough to beat.
Thanks for the well wishes for Sarah, she's doing really well. Should be back to her regular self in about a week. Yep, scary crash for sure. That was a longggggggg 3-4 mi climb back up from the bottom that day.
Great riding, great vibes, and water water everywhere. I'm already planning to return, and also plan to look around a bit for a vacation cottage to buy. I could easily spend a few weeks a year riding in the area. The Salmon Creek loop I did on Saturday (north side up, south side back to town, with a spur to the falls) on the single-speed to recover from the arse bagging I received on Friday's Middle Fork ride really convinced me how much I love the environment.
Now, if only Stephanie will meet me for a ride now that we're back to the Bay Area....

Buying a place... I guess the trails were ok huh?
The crazy thing is as much was we rode, the locals were talking of more, more, more options. Are bikes illegal on the fire roads there??

We do not have "Fire roads." They are logging, forest or gravel roads. We use them to get to and connect the trails.
Much of the time we do not shuttle. We shuttle when "guests" are in town so they can ride more trail in a few days. Full length Bunchgrass and Middle Fork rides are the main shuttle rides (thanks, Randy). We will do sections of either as loops or out and backs. One of my favorite loops is ~45 miles with an 18-mile gravel road climb in the middle (or beginning or end, depending on the start point).
More options? There is a reason our white oval stickers say "OROR". "We can ride Alpine...or, or we can do Tire Mt...or, or, Moon Point...or, or Larison Creek...or, or..."
The area has ~500 miles of singletrack. Most of it is open to bikes. I have been riding around Oakridge for 20 years and still riding new-to-me trails.

Glad you were able to learn to enjoy the warm drizzle!
We of the Great Pacific NorWet do not need evidence. Having fun in the wet is a way of life from late Oct to at least May. Why do you think I ask "What mud?" every year at Sea Otter.

Well, I finally got enough free time at work to get some video edited. This is my first shot at posting a video through YouTube so be gentle. Hope you all enjoy!!
MBO August 2007 was wonderful! Thanks to JustJeff and grrah for getting there first and setting up a perfect campsite right on the river for the MTBR group. Larrison Rock and Lawler were great riding! Everything was so green. The single track on Larrison Rock was smooth and fast and almost overgrown in places but still very ride-able even for less experienced riders. ibikergal and I took our time coming down and it was absolutely beautiful. Lawler was more technical and so much fun! The guides were fantastic, especially Krista, Boyd and Shari. Thanks so much for all of your encouragement and help. I was anticipating an entire weekend of intense riding until my crash at the end of Lawler. If I could re-do those few seconds when I still had the opportunity to break hard and avoid that dirt mound I would do it. I’m so sorry to have caused so much concern and inconvenience but I’m so grateful for everyone’s help. Kevin and Todd, firefighters from the East Bay, were on the ride and they were among the first on the scene making sure I was okay. francois was so good to sit with me while I was still incoherent and keep talking to me until I could make sense of things again. Meanwhile bustamove and Aussie Bob raced down to the shuttle to get more help and send rensho back up the hill. The Law gave up her jacket to keep me warm and she and dan51 and others waited with me until I was coherent again and on my way to the ER. A few hours later I was back at camp with nothing more than muscle strains and contusions so I was pretty happy about that.
Instead of riding on Saturday I was at the massage booth and later in the day I was able to watch the women’s riding clinic. Thanks so much to Laura and Dave for being there. Without Dave’s expert, gentle massage I think I would still be struggling with range of motion issues. And thanks so much to Shanti for putting on such a great clinic. I’m sorry I wasn’t able to participate then but I am really looking forward to putting those tips to work on my hill climbs, descents, bunny hopping, wheelies and back wheel pops when I completely recover.
I missed riding Sunday too, but I was so glad to get back on my beautiful Salsa el mariachi (which escaped injury for the most part) on Monday for the Mackenzie River “B” ride. It was my first rain ride and it was great fun riding with rensho, Aussie Bob, Fiona, Ogre, ibikergal, and Jasmina (who ran the trail instead of riding it). (I hope to ride with all of you again soon!) It was so encouraging to see ibikergal who turned back early in the ride because of a head and chest cold waiting for us along the way in her big white van at every stop where the trail intersected the highway. It was an incredible ride and I know I couldn’t have done it without rensho riding right behind me or just ahead of me looking out for me, keeping me safe on the trail and taking my bike over every bridge crossing and any difficult sections. The fact that I had such a great weekend even with the crash is really thanks to him. Thanks rensho for everything. You are my best friend evar! Also thanks to jeffh, Chum, Plim, Jdubs12, Big Larry, ebrider, mykor and anyone else I may have forgotten for making my first MBO so much fun. I’m really looking forward to next year.

Hey Sarah, Take it easy on the recovery and keep us posted. Your memory is so good that I think your cleared from that concussion.
I think what makes a great event is a great adventure, a good attitude and great people. We had all of that and things were good despite the mishaps.
For me, I had the best time. But, it can be a whole lot better! Here's my trouble list... I haven't ridden in about a month because of my pinched hand, had a migraine on the way up, my chain didn't work on the first day, sinus infection, missed Sunday's ride, rained buckets on Monday's ride, camera broke... wa, wa, wah!
But it was still a grand time and the promise for next year is huge. Maybe I'll go to both the July and August events to make sure I get it right.
Boyd's got the right idea. He flew in from Germany for the July event, stayed the whole month to ride, attended the August event and left.

Francois,
Yeah it wasn't a bad plan. Of course now I'm back in Germany, and haven't ridden my bike since MBO, but there's more to life than cycling (or so I'm told). I should be down at Eurobike convincing these German's to start making more 29er's, but I'll just give them a year or two
I hope you're feeling better soon, and get back on that beautiful Mamasita.
Glad you didn't let a little concussion put you off cycling Sarah. We'll be sure to warn people about that bump next year (or maybe just put a mattress behind it .
......tight singletrack, lush vegitation, big old tall trees!
Decent video job your first time out! Our Alpine & Tire Mtn. ride was awesome last year. Weather was different though as we were enduring dust the first half before dropping down to the logging road for the split to Tire Mtn.
I might have a couple pics. I was having too much fun to stop and take many though. I have to say... Middle Fork is still my favorite, but Tire Mountain in the mist/ rain was a blast. Middle Fork... the pictures just don't do it justice.
favor to ask: can anyone that used a Garmin (or similar) plot all the rides on one motion based/google earth map? Me thinks that would be cool to look at.
...--solo--everyone else bailed because of the mist ...
Guilty as charged. We ride enough in the rain up here that when on vacation...
At least we got to see Crater & Diamond Lakes, and ride Waldo in the dry.

I have the GPS tracks from the rides I did, but I've never used any of the online mapping software. I can give it a shot if some points me in the right direction.
Randy might have already done it for all of the rides though.
