King Kennedy Climb: Sat Sept. 8 - Search for the King

There's been a lot of smack talk about Kennedy times, and speculations on who climbs it in some mythical 12 minutes and 34 seconds...or what have you.

Well, we're looking for the current Kings. We know there's a lot of local talent in the bay area. Nothing like a good o'l head to head battle royal to sort all that out.
Tag Heuer is sponsoring the event with official timing (me with a stopwatch).

Come one, come all.
Come spectate.
Come be a moving roadblock.
Come see if the 29s are really within grasp.

9:30am Saturday Sept. 8th 2007 <----This ought to be enough time to line up some fast bikes.

Categories?
Fast as hell
SS?
Closest to predicted time (TTW format)
Fastest keg hauler?

You guys think this can work? Is Ned in town? Where are those Colombians in Willow Glen. Menso, Genshammer, Foggy, Northbay, Eastbay?

Search of the Kings.....(or Queens).

I'm there and I've been back on the French diet for 2 weeks so far. I'll be going for a PR on 9/8. Menso, you gonna drop me in the first 1/4 mile or are you gonna toy with me until the 1st wall, then bolt? The latter strategy probably won't get you under 32m, so you better find someone faster to humiliate.

Excellent......(hands rubbing).

Great idea on the BBQ. I'll dig into that.

There's plenty of lawn and parking at the LG High school. There's also a big park on Blossom Hill just 4-5 blocks away.

Count me in.

Should be fun. I'm in it just to shoot for the PR for myself.

....now for bike selection.

That one is easy. 2.5 Super tacky tires, Flat pedals - good start.

I feel pretty comfortable on most climbs. On Kennedy however I wonder if the fact that my super light Ritchey Innovader (that is now quite bald) is something of a liability. It still gets me up many other climbs in the area but I wonder if I could gain a minute or 1:30 by putting a knobbier tire in the back. Or maybe just the original Python that my bike came with would be best. The Innovader is due for the recycling bin anyway and I have a unused Python ultralight. But maybe I would be better off with something with a bit more bite.
I can't make this ride but I do pay attention to how fast I go up Kennedy as an indicator of how fast I can climb in general. My times are divided into 20th and 21st century though. Someday I would like to break my 21st century PR (about 44 minutes). I think my 20th century PR (38:10) is pretty safe though.

Can we have a category for heavy bikes (over 30#) or heavy combinations (Bike+Rider over 230#)?
In general I would be for putting all bikes on a scale before the competitions starts anyway...

I have no idea how fast you are, but the mere thought of riding SS with platform pedals up Kennedy's 1800 feet in <4 miles makes me wanna "talk to RALPH on the big white phone." Ask CHUM what he thinks. I imagine Expert level XC guys could do it, which is definitely not me.

Either I ride that or a 6"+, 35lb, 1x9 dualie with platforms. I actually like climbing on the SS better since it's a HT and front fork can be dropped to 95mm and locked out.. but yeah Kennedy definitely sounds like it could kill me in retrospect. I guess I'm up for a challenge just to test myself??? Maybe I'm too optimistic I'm not fast.. but dogged.

That sounds like a lot of fork travel on an SS rig. I'm assuming this SS is XC oriented?

If you actually want to ride your bike I suggest the 1x9 dualie with platforms. Other wise bring your hiking boots, water and a lot of time.

I will go up top early to see the sprint finish between Menso and Beaverbiker at the the top of the second biotch?

It's a Sinister Ridge.. with a Pike coil (Had a Z1 but found it to be a bit too tall), 32x18, 28mm rims, 50mm stem, yada yada. It's set up to be more of a burly trail bike but feels great so far on the xc rides too with the low front end.

Thanks for the premonitions of what looks like to be a hellish ride so far

C'mon is not that bad. If your bike's got gears is plenty doable even for a turtle like me - it's just a matter of time, but I don't think there is any hiking involved.

Unfluid One, you'll do fine.

Something tells me I need to climb this thing at least once before 9/8. Gives me time to practice my "The Look".

In that case (if it were me), take the gears and the heavier bike.

The more, the merrier.

It's a fire road climb in Los Gatos, Ca. I wouldn't drive from Sacto area to San Jose to climb a fire road, but this hill climb will be for some serious bragging rights and after you crush us, you can drive over to Demo or Santa Cruz to get in some single track. The trailhead/start line is actually just off Kennedy Rd about 1 mile east of the little green google arrow in the link here. Rensho will post better details as we get closer, I am sure.
http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&q=...=1&sa=N&tab=wl

Be ready for 30minutes or more of constant suffering, with 2 to 3 long walls at the end.

I just climbed to the top on the SS.. barf. I took plenty of breaks and managed to only hike the first "wall", and the 2nd half of the 2nd wall, so something to work on this year.
definitely a great workout and one of the most satisfying cardio ride...maybe 2nd only to that triple loop at Demo.
I won't even go into how long i took today....but this comes to mind

Hell, the one time (first and last) I SS'ed Kennedy, I think I had at least 5 dismounts.

Brutal.

Nice work on grinding it out!

Depends on what kind of rider you are I guess.

I have a buddy who does Kennedy on a CX bike and he can flat hammer it.

Me personally, I think I'd be faster on my MTB.

If you're a climber type and have a nice light CX bike you can flick your way up the mountain, then you could probably put down a decent number.

What's your low gear on it?

34x27 is my lowest. I guess I'll have to give both the CX and the MTB a trial run before Sept 8th.

I just had my third SS (32/17) climb on Kennedy. As always, the last wall must be walked! (I could manage it on my geary in the past.) The rest of the climb is a patient crawl for me.

I will be there on 9/8 but will not care about finishing time... Crawling is good...

with 34/30 on this climb. I have a 34/27 on my cross bike too. I think my mountain bike would be faster with a 32/32 . With a 34/30 on my 21 pound cross bike I think I could gain a minute or two and stay seated for a good portion of the climb. In fact I really don't want to climb it in a 34/27 and I never have. Not only that but it's not much fun going down the back side on the cx.

Trailhead is here. stats are 3.9mi in 1900ft. No elevation to contend with. There are extended sections at 18%, 1 biotch at 30%, 1 small biotch at 28%, 1 biotch at 20%, and 1 downhill . All on loose FR.

Menso's barbeque party

Hi Rensho,

Count me in. (but I'm only racing against JeffH).

Have you found a good spot for a barbeque afterwards?. I'll bring charcoal, buns, burgers, tomatoes and stuff to have a nice mtbr send-off-to-college party for Menso.

J.L.

P.S. Is there a TTW tomorrow?

You make this ride sound so appealing, I can't believe I rarely ever ride it anymore it's usually hot with annoying gnats flying around your face in case the above description did not sound fun enough.

We'll do a mass start for the Kings race.

Everyone else will be on their own to make it up to the top. You'll either see the racers on the course as they fly by, or at the finish line.

I'll sync watches with someone so we'll know actual time at the top.

The Kings race will start at 10am. That gives 30mins for assembly and riders to start up for the top in time to see the finish.

This is lining up to be a nice Battle Royal.

I'll put it out to the Team Wrongway guys as well as some of the other clubs. Let's see if we can strengthen the field for the Kings TT.

Gonna be good.

Judging by what I've seen [very briefly, as he flew past] at the endurance races, my money is on Sean Allen, on whatever he chooses to ride.

My plan is to be first place in the cyclocross division. First and last... so nobody better join the cross party.

Is there any type of qualification to enter the search of the kings? Even though I might be the last, I would like to be timed. Is that ok?

Ali, good to hear from you.

Just show up with your bike and ride. We'll time anyone that wants to be timed.

You're welcome to start with the Kings as well , if that's what you want.

I won't be starting with the Kings. Maybe 20mins ahead of them. I want to be at the top to see the killer finish!

Good idea.

I am looking forward to meeting you guys again. I will bring a number of my friends too, who mistakenly think that I am a strong rider. I want them to see what strong riders are like.

LOL. Next I expect Lance will show up and claim he's so slow lately and needs a head start too.

I'm trying to see if I can get time off that Saturday to show you guys what slow is really like.

It's appears everyone is going up ahead just to see Menso and Beaverbiker duke it out at the walls at the top.
But who's going to hold those energy boys down while everyone else is trying to get a lead to the top?
(And is beaverbiker actually showing?)

It's clear you never rode with me.

With everyone claiming to be the slowest, I see a secondary-race growing. A race of Kings and Sloths?

Very sure the Kings race is more than just 2 riders. I see a few LG locals doing recon rides up and down that mtn.

If Sean comes down to ride, that will be a treat to see him match up against the young uns and the seasoned experts.

Sean, Foggy, Menso, Beavers and others.

Jeffh had a good idea of talking to Chris at Roaring Mouse to see if some of his team will come down.

I'm banking on less than 20 people racing.

I think I'm only good for a low 40's. I need to do a couple recon rides myself.

Foggy, I have no question you've done sub34; no worries there.

Conditions will be pretty good, other than the typical looseness of hardpack FR. Like Rumpfy says, hopefully we'll still be mild to cool at 10am.

When the date was set at Sept 8th, that gave enough folks some training and recon time to hopefully put in many PRs on this Time Trial.

Please be respectful!

Please be respectful in parking around the trail head. Don't block or partially block anyone's drive way.

If you're allowing CX bikes…

you should time the descent as well.

Genshammer and the buy-cell.com guys know how to get a hold of Don Myrah. He'll show up on a rigid 6 speed freewheel with thumb shifters and shame us all.

I'll be chasing expert upgrade points at Whiskeytown.

One more thing,
I like to ride Kennedy around 8-8:30 AM on a weekend. Since it takes me 55 min to get up, you may encounter me coming down.

I will be very easy to spot. I will be the guy with the eyes the size of golf balls, over heated, loud brakes, and my mouth wide open screaming "Holly Crap, get out of the way!"

It's a real test on how good I really am at reverse steering and power slides.

on an MTB. There's nothing technical on the climb to overwhelm your CX bike.

I mentioned this climb to some of the riders at last night's crit. Will you be sporting SJBC kit or the stars and stripes?

Good reminder.

We're likely to have everyone start in town and ride up to the trailhead. Trailhead parking is too limited.

Someone get a hold of Don then. That's exactly the intent of this climb, to air all these mythical ascent times once and for all.

Too bad you can't make it RJ2, would have been nice to see you.

That's a good way to go. Kennedy rd is rather narrow, but on Sat mornings there are more bikes on it than cars by 5:1

I'll have TimmyC get in touch with Don, but he's in no condition right now to challenge his old sub-30 minute times. Dude hasn't been riding in 10 years!! But the rumor is he's back in training...

Ok,

Cats:
SS
Estrogen
FS over 31lbs (we'll be weighing)
Kings
Old dudes over 45 (we'll be carding)

Another other ones?

Other than Kings, the cats are going by smallest time gap right? Or do you guys want to do straight up first up the hill?

I'm bringing a few friends to watch and participate in the climb up and over. One of the riders is a lawyer who got me off of a speeding ticket while on Kennedy last year. I am sure he would be more than helpful for anyone who has to deal with the speeding issue on the trail.

I'll most likely be on a green 2005 Enduro 130 for the heavy weight division and wearing my Iron Maiden jersey seen a few times at Laguna earlier this year.

Personally, I think it should be one class, one title. No distinction between age or equipment...just who ever has the legs to haul the mail up to the top first.

I'm not a King, nor do I play one on MTBR.

Start line: even with green portapotty.
Finish line: even with the tree at the top of the 2nd wall. This is past the 'false top), downhill, up first wall, flat, up 2nd wall. Tree on left.

The Kings race is as you mention above.

The other cats are just to let us mortals play along as well and have fun.

I always thought that 'false top' was the halfway point at the shady area with the tree in the middle. From your description though, false top is actually close to the end, before the downhill... Hmmm... Still learning...

That would be called 'The oak tree', and is 5/8ths to the top.

The false top is close to the end. I'd say 1/4 mile.

Ah, I see.

I have a feeling a lot of us will be there for PR's only.
