Preston FR Photo Thread

I just got a Preston, and I would like to see what some other people's Prestons look like!
Here's mine:

Damn fine lookin' rides! I'm hoping to be able to add yet another beauty to this thread by next Friday.

So kitchenware, how are you liking the Lyrik/Dhx combo? I've ordered the same setup and am wondering if it's as good as I've been dreamin' about

The suspension feels pretty evenly matched. Yesterday was the first real test ride and I feel comfortable saying that it's one of, if not THE best bike I've put together to date. It's a bit heavy feeling with the temporary wheels, but it climbs well, feels well balanced front/rear and is a blast going down. I like it.

I bet a Lyric would be a perfect match for a Preston with its 545mm A-C. Good choice.

I would have to agree with the choice of running the Lyric. Except mine is on the 06 frame (I couldn't resist the closeout prices on last years frames)

Yes it's a large.

So far I'm absolutely loving the DHX. I'd have to agree with Kitchenware who started in an earlier post that combined with the Lyrik the bike feels pretty well balanced. I'd also have to agree that this bike is probably one of the finest I've ever had the pleasure to swing my leg over.

The domain damping is very similar to the Pike which is highly recommended. I think the dumbest advice is saying something is not recommended because it's "lower end". There are low end products that do not perform, and low end products that perform surprisingly well. Looking at the reviews the domain has gotten I would say it seems (I have not tried it personally) to be one of the surprisingly well performing products.

For a more budget bike I would guess it's the best new fork you can get. I would imagine the transition guys have tried quite a few different forks on the Preston and here is what they told me about the domain (I asked via email).

Quote:
both the Domain and Pike are excellent forks. The Domain
U-Turn would work great on the Preston. It is heavier than the pike for
sure. The U-turn is a much beefier fork and one of my favorites.
Deciding between the two really depends on your type of riding and
trails you ride. If you aren't doing a ton of freeride stuff with bigger
moves, the Pike will probably work perfect, but if you want something
that is really plush and stiff and don't care about the weight, I would
go with a Domain.

Quote:
the Domain actually feels like a really beefy Pike. It has
great small bump sensitivity and is just a great all around feeling
fork.

I have a tendency to buy very expensive parts for my bike, but have very often noticed the difference to a GOOD cheap product (in terms of performance) can be very small...

edit:

I'm sure the Transition guys have the best objective picture on how different forks perform on their frames, especially ones they sell with the frame. I'd recommend asking them directly.

... Absolutely not. The Domain was the fork I initially intended to go with on my Preston. That is until I called up Transition to discuss the fork options. They included the Lyrik which is not listed on their website for the Preston at a very reasonable up charge... The Lyrik then became the biggest no-brainer on earth! Call up ..you may be very pleasantly surprised!

Now to keep this thread on topic....

I know...I know... the Preston needs some new pics taken. Maybe when we go out and play today I'll bring my camera.

Ooo Ooo I want to play. I finally got this thing built after about 3 months of slowly collecting parts as to not arise the suspicion of the girlfriend.... then BAM!® one day there is a new bike in the garage lol My LBS had this frame hanging in the shop for a year, finally I broke down and gave it a home. Got the Frame, Roco and Fork for $900!

Specs:
2006 Preston, size large
2006 Marzocchi Z.1 Sport with some special "Works" love
2007 Marzocchi Roco Air Rear Shock
Transition Revolution 32 wheelset
Maxxis Minion 2.35 Single Ply wire bead mounted tubeless with Maxxis strips and Stans
Race Face Evolve DH Crankset
Sram X.0 rear Derailleur
Sram Xgen Front Derailleur
Sram X.9 Shfters
Avid Juicy 5 Brakes with Straitline Blades
Sunline V-one Stem
Sunline V-one Pedals
Azonic StripBar handlebars
Race Face Evolve seatpost
WTB Pure V saddle
ODI Ruffian Lock On's with Anchor Freeride bar caps

I finally see what all the hype is about with this bike. It rides great in just about any situation you throw it into, and it climbs very very well for having no platform on the fork or shock.

Of course the whole reason I bought this bike was so that I could have a short travel full suspension to add to the stable to compliment my Banshee Morphine hard tail and the Prestons big brother...

Two totally different bikes for two totally different types of riding, but both absolutely kick ass for what they are built for. The guys at Transition have got it nailed and have made a repeat customer out of me. Next on the list, a Siren for the lady

Yeah, I like it. Its very linear if you know what I mean, it basically feels the same throughout its stroke where say the Roco TSTr on my Dirtbag ramps up at the end of its stroke. The reason I went with the Roco Air is that the Swinger 4way that came with the frame was impossible to spring for a rider my size (6'3" 240lbs). I would have needed a 1300lb spring, so air was the only way to go and the Roco air has the biggest air volume of any air shock and its insanely cheap compared to a Fox DHX air.

I called Marzocchi and talked to them on what air pressure I should run for my weight and they told me 225psi but I have found right around 175psi gets me the proper 30% sag I want and it doesn't bottom out very easily.

PS if anyone needs a 6.5x1.5 Swinger 4 way, I will let the one that came on the frame go for $100 brand new

Hello all !
Does anyone got the Preston Fr with a pike ?
I want to buy one but I don't know the fork i'll put with.
I hesitate with the 36 Van R 2008 and the lyrik Solo air but they are more expensive than a pike.
For the moment i've got a psylo XC on my hardtail.

And what do you think about RP23 or Van R shocks ? are they very different from the DHX 5 ?

Thanks for your answers,
Have a good ride,
Loïc.

I have a Wotan which has 545mm axel to crown (fork hight). This is very close to what Transition has tested it with. With the Pike thee Axel to crown is about 520 (even a bit less) which is 25mm less.

The Wotan also allows dropping the forks height by 40mm which would make it even shorter then the Pike. I have used it with this setting in very flat and technical terrain where there is really no downhill. Often it even feels better that way, though the angles feel like riding a Klein Attitude (xc bike). However as soon as I head to something with downhill and drops I love the higher fork.

The Pike will not be as short as the Wotan in it's lowest height. Still I would imagine it will make the bike more of a trail bike (though it will probably still feel great going downhill). I think it's also very much up to what you are used to. My old bike had an even more relaxed head angle then the Preston. Maby for this reason I feel like I could have an even taller fork when I am at a downhill center, though it would make the bike a lot less nimble.

If you want to save money I personally love the Roco Air shock.

Yup, I got 2 flats on my last run of the day and was out of tubes, so I had to walk it down Bike held up great, only thing holding me back was my skills.

Definitely need a bit more seat time before I can give a better review, but it seems like a perfect match for me. I weigh 150 lbs with gear and I'm use to rinding my hardtail on rocky XC/AM terrain so the Preston is a great fit as a light DH/FR rig. It's fairly light even with a burlyish build so it is very flickable and maneuverable but still heavy enough to hold a line over the rough stuff. I know it wasn't designed to be a DH rig but I find it more than up to the task for moderate DH riding. Maybe when I get good enough I will upgrade to a full DH rig but the Preston will hold me over till I progress.

I was running 35 psi like I always do. First one happened after landing a jump. Second one in a rockgarden. The two days of rain prior to the trip didn't help riding any either. I'm gonna make the jump up to full downhill tubes.

A good rim strip tape & baby powder can also make a big difference. I personally like the Velox Rim strip tape.

To add to that "review", I recently rode my 2006 preston at whistler for a few days, and it worked well. I was sticking mainly to intermediates though. The only really annoying thing were the brake bumps, which I think wouldn't be as bad with more travel.

I am doing a build right now, I went with the Pike I talked to transition and a few other guys that run the preston and they all swear by the pike its a perfect match for the preston.. I was debating it aswell the Fox 36 is a real good option cause you got the 160mm for that DH stuff which is nice.. But for under 500 bucks fox is a no go.. I got my Pike for $400 check out ebay or call Victor over at Ride This about a front fork he will hook you up. But the Pike is a real good option the Domain got some more travel but the Pike is a way better fork

I'd say try a z.1 from marzocchi. The cheaper ones can be had for about $300 and they are sturdy.

yeah i saw the z.1, i'm thinking something along the lines of this, i went to jensonusa.com, and modified the 700, or 800$ buld, i think its the second choice, and i got it to around $600-650, then one of the closeout frames from the TBC store, or from adrenaline bikes, or there was some place that had them for 620$, and then a cheap fork i might upgrade next year, depends on how everything goes, but for the fork i might wait until the Toronto Bike Show and get a deal there, and in the mean time i'll gain some money working for my dad.

Yeah, but the damping isn't any good in the cheap ones. RV, SSV, etc don't work worth crap over repeated hits. HSCV or RC2 is where its at.

You do realize that they have exactly the same damper, except with slightly different adjustments, don't you? The 318 has lacks the lockout of the Pike, which is, as far as I'm concerned, useless on a long travel fork. The Domain is just heavy, because it's got steel stanchions, more travel, bigger stanchions, etc.

The domain is a 1.5lb heavier than the Pike. I am not sure which domain you guys were talking about 318 - 160mm or the 302 - 180mm. Either way I beleive the Pike is a better fork than the Domain but thats my .02

This might create a bit of a buying frenzy but a guy on eBay sells a bunch of them in different sizes. Starting bid is $25

Nice rig and build kitchen! Out of curiosity, why'd you go 36 vs 32 on the rims? Everything else seems to be fairly moderate on the weight scale (XT cranks, etc)

Good eye... those are temp/lift wheels. I'm building some 823s for trail use, still undecided on which hubs though.

So I wanted to post a picture of mine since I've started riding it during the summer, but always no time to grab a nice pic with the slr; then I thought "what the hell", so here's mine in xc-setup at the end of a longish trip in the italian Appennines (btw this bike is awesome, makes me ride downhill tracks as well as these 40km all-mountain trips).

Oh, xc-setup means fork lowered to 115mm and seatpost put HIGH.

(larger formats here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/aadm/1307129272/)

Technical details are:
RockShox Domain 318 U-Turn 115-160mm
Fox DHX 5.0 Coil
Formula K24 Brakes, 200mm front / 180mm rear
SRAM X7 Trigger (front & rear)
SRAM X7 triggers & rear mid-cage, SRAM X-Gen at the front
Cranks: Truvativ Hussefelt 170mm
Chainrings: Truvativ - 22/32 w/PC Bash, Cassette: SRAM PG950 11-32
Wheels: Spank Subrosa
Tires: Maxxis Minion 2.35 60a
Grips: ODI Rogue Lock-on
Seat: TBC - Park n' Ride
Pedals: TBC Stepdown

Promise to post a better picture sometime soon.

Nice ride, so how does the Domain perform? Very few reviews have been posted, but you have ridden yours awhile so hopefully you will comment.

Also, Formula K24s...thinking about putting them on my Bottlerocket once I have the cash. Power/modulation? Overall feel? Anything.
Thanks

I don't have a lot of experience in terms of freeride forks; the only one that I've used for a while was an old Marzocchi Shiver, the single-crown upside-down fork dated 2002/2003.

I can't really find anything wrong in the fork, but I can't say if all the fun I'm having on it is due to the frame, to the fork, of if it's the whole package !

Anyway, it seems to me that this is a perfect fork, only a bit heavy, but if I can still pedal the bike so well who cares then. It gives me plenty of confidence when going down on fast sweeping corners with berms etc, or when I tackle the slow, very steep trails in the woods, with plenty of small drops, roots, rocks. I can't comment on the quality of the suspension, i.e. if it's 'plush', if it bottoms out (never had this problem so far, but I'm not a heavy rider and also I'm pretty crap so I'm not going on big drops and jumps).

It's also so convenient when I just need to pedal for miles to lower the fork at the 115mm setting, increase the compression damping and then just go without the feeling of "suspension eating up my energy".

The only thing that I don't like: its looks; I mean, who wants a fork with shiny chrome stanchions ??? I want them black ! But it's really a minor issue this...

Oh I love these brakes. They are very powerful but also have excellent modulation; coming from a motorbike background I was really impressed by the sweet modulability of these brakes; I've setup my levers on the inside of the sram shifters, so I use them with only one-finger, and that's enough really ! They remind me of a racing Brembo radial pump that I've tried once on a Ducati motorbike in terms of feeling and power.

Also I like the fact that the brakle fluid reservoir is inside the lever casing, so no fear of destroying enything.

A couple of days ago I have also changed the rear pads and again this is impressive, so easy to remove the old ones and put the new.

Again, if there's one thing that I'd change, is the looks of these brakes; on my old xc bike I have Hope minis and the caliper looks like a small piece of art; Formula calipers they just look ok, not stunning.

Here's my revised 2007 Preston. Specs are:

XT/XTR drivetrain
Thomson seatpost/stem
Fox DHX 5.0 air shock
Fox Talas 36 RC2 fork
Chris King/Mavic 823 wheels
Hutchinson Barracuda 2.3 UST tubeless tires
Race Face Atlas cranks w/Blackspire bashguard
Formula Oro K24 brakes
Answer Protaper bars
King headset
etc.

LBS scale says the weight is 35 lbs even. I'm loving this bike more and more as I get used to it and dial in the suspension. It's a keeper!

I guess thats a Small size frame? Strange, cause it doesn't have that short reinforcement between the seat tube and the top tube....

yes, that's a small (I also noticed for the first time the reinforcing brace at the base of the seatpost just on this thread).

i'm 1.72m, short but with loooong arms and legs (girlfriend says I'm like a monkey); I was in between an S and an M and the Transition importer suggested to go for an S.
I suppose that's ok, it feels a bit short when climbing (I need to move away my legs when doing tight switchbacks otherwise I'd hit the knees with the handlebars) but when going down it's ok, and also gives me some more standover which I definetly need.

Built!

nothing exciting, the build is mostly parts from my old ride. the biggest set backs are my fork and wheelset. dont have the $$ for that so this will have to do for a while.
