Leysin Switzerland 6/6/2004

Sunday, I hooked up with locals Dave and Nina in Leysin for day one of my downhill season. Our day consisted of only two descents, which took us all afternoon (with obligatory beer stop in between). First descent, we take the lift up and normal route (mostly ski pistes) down, Dave shows me some sweet (and steep) trails in the trees which I would have otherwise whizzed right on by. Second descent we take the lift up and descend off the other side and down to the valley to the town of Aigle. For the first half we made our way down alternating through sketchy rock gardens and cow pastures. After reaching Leysin, the route consists of some sweet singletrack / doubletrack / cow pastures / fields / and a fun gully-like trail with banked corners down into the vinyards of Aigle. A total run of over 1600m of vertical. Return to Leysin by cogwheel train. A most excellent first day on the slopes.

Enjoy...

Wow!

As always.

I've been to Switzerland three times. In all my travels to mountainous regions of the U.S., I have never found anything that matches Swiss beauty and spirit.

Thanks for the awesome post.

hey maggot! leysin is about 26CHFS ($20 USD) per day. i normally ride at portes du soliel, which cost me 165 CHFS ($130 USD) for a season pass that lasts from late June to early October. after i average it out for a season, it might as well be free.

Beautiful

Maybe it's just me but you seem a bit over-protected for the terrain. I can only go by what I see in the pictures so maybe I don't see some of the more trecherous descents. Is it worse than it looks?

Keep in mind, it doesn't matter what the terrain is (rocky, loose gravel, open field, grass, dirt).. if you are going downhill... and fast... if you happen to fall at a high rate of speed, you sure will be happy you have that protective gear on.

a bit. i just happened on this ride to take pics on the most grassy bits. i wear full armor and have needed every bit of it at one time or another. an endo in the wrong place can mean and end-o to my season or possibly biking career.
