New Mtbr Classifieds!

Hello All,

Mtbr has now launched a brand new Classifieds system. This new system has many great features and more security than our old system. Please read about the features, and if you have any questions/comments/concerns, please post them to this thread here.

Link to the New Classifieds is:
http://classifieds.mtbr.com/index.php

Some of the new features are:

1.) Registration is the same as the forums (and photo gallery). No more separate usernames and passwords

2.) Better security through a more thorough registration process, seller feedback ratings, and forum reputation/post count as a guide to the user's reliability

3.) You can now use Paypal to pay for your ads

4.) You can utilize Paypal within the ad, for product payment

5.) New Categories! Including 29er bikes, Vintage Bikes, and Vintage parts

6.) You can enter your zip code to see distance of seller to your location

7.) We still have the "Latest Ads Posted" page (aka Daily Market) with RSS feed!

8.) The old "checklist" feature is now known as the "Watch List", to help you mark certain ads to keep track of.

9.) You can post comments directly to the ads

I'm sure there are others, and I will be adding more info to this thread, as is needed.

Stay tuned.

Thanks,

-gregg, MikeG, and the Mtbr crew

It sounds great Gregg!

The better payment options and increased security should be a real advantage. Are advertisement prices going to change at all?

How are you going to implement the new system - will it be run side by side with the old system until the old advertisements have expired, or will you be transferring them all over to the new system?

Keep up the great work guys!

Dave.

We'll run both systems side by side for a two week period. After that, the old Classifieds system will be read only for 1 month.

Ads will not be transferred, but we expect most people to start using the new system right away.

Pricing has not yet been decided, but during the beta-launch, placing a basic ad will be free, upgrading to highlighted (darker grey background) is $2.00, upgrading to bold is $2.00, and upgrading to italic is $2.00.

No more Gold or Platinum priority placements.

Bravo!

I must have flagged down about 15 scammers the last few weeks. The feedback rating, and associating it to the site user features would definately be a huge plus.

The Username and Password for the New Classifieds is the same as the Forums!

Please note that the Username and Password for the new Classifieds is the same as the Forums.

If you are not registered in the forums, you can register here:

http://forums.mtbr.com/

And click on the "Register" link. This will be easier, since you will have one username and password for the Mtbr Forums, Mtbr Photo Gallery, and Mtbr Classifieds.

No more having to remember a separate login and password.

Thanks,

-gregg

Really like the format.

Does this system have the capability of sending listings updates through email like the "auto notify" feature on the old system?

Thx.

yep. Drill down to any category listing page like this ...
http://classifieds.mtbr.com/showcat.php/cat/3

Search for the text "Subscribe to Category"

Change requests

Can you add the category to each record (e.g. frame vs. full bike) in the Latest Ads Posted?

Since you can now have an open forum for comments, you're going to have things like "Don't buy his, I'll sell for less", etc. Are you going to post up rules for this type of thing or is it anything goes?

Thanks.

Two excellent suggestions, Homebrew. Definitely we'll try and get the category back for the Latest Ads Posted page. The old one had it, so the new one should two.

And yes, there will definitely be a need for guidelines for postings within an ad. Off the top of my head, the rules would be:

1.) no spamming other people's ads
2.) comments and questions would be restricted solely to the seller or their item

Stay tuned.

How about "Search by Country"?

Because of the expense of shipping internationally it would be nice to see what is for sale in your particular country. There seem to be alot of Aussies and Canucks lurking around...

Just tried to place an ad with 4 photos totaling around 14 MB--page took awhile to load, then jumped back to "step one" of the ad placing process. My ad was not posted.

Any idea whats up?

With 14MB worth of photos I have a fair idea!

I assume the same rules regarding image size in the gallery would apply to the classifieds? Perhaps that could be mentioned in the advertisement creation process?

I don't think a search of the old classifieds turns up results from the new classifieds, which is a bummer. I posted an ad in the new section but hardly anyone is going to see it because most folks browse the old ones. A good way to get traffic to the new area would be to make searches run in the old classifieds return items from the new area.

Otherwise the spot looks good, and I posted one up just as easy as pie. Good stuff, and nice job implementing the pictures.

We're running the two systems side by side for 2 weeks, then shutting down posting to the old ones, which will remain read only for 30 days.

To tie the searches together would require too much coding for something that will be going away soon.

Judging from the number of listings, it looks like the new Classifieds have taken off very well! (of course, it just might have something to do with them being free....for now...)

Yes, like the other member stated, 14 megs is wayy to big. I will work on getting the file size limit listed, so it's clear exactly how big the files can be.

You will need to try and get your images under 200k each.

Thx.

Hi Gregg,

Do you know if the contact seller feature is working. I've tested it and received no email. Have not gotten a response on any of my ads. Pretty strange since I usually get at least scammers. Thanks.

Gregg-
Just a thought- the amount of information shown is overload for me when browsing. It it too difficult to discern what items are listed without taking in half of what people posted about the product. Could you cut that box down to a one line summary if more requests are posted?
Thanks, and keep it up!

could you consider incorporating the following:

add a size column for framesets and complete bikes - so you don't have to actually double click every ad (where the size doesn't show in the description) to figure out what size frame/bike is for sale

add a steerer length column for the front forks section

add an eye to eye / stroke column for the rear shocks section

This would help wasting time opening up ads that are not applicable to the size frame you ride, if the fork, shock would even fit on your bike etc.

When posting a comment to someone else's ad, the interim page says something like "You've successfully edited your ad", which is presumably not right.

+1 or having Frame size in the table view.

Hey Gregg!

Question - with regards to the Contact Seller feature - I found something i'm after, but it's "too good to be true". I sent the seller a P.M. before noticing the Contact Seller feature (i'm bright, eh?!?!?!?). Question is - does the Contact Seller feature go through P.M. or e-mail? I don't want to send another P.M. and seem ..... pushy (I know he's a busy man).

As always, PATIA!

And since i'm here - MikeG check you P.M. box please!

Keep up the great work all!

EDIT - sorry, one more - if I place/open/start an ad now, can I add a pic(s) later, like 1 or 2 days after? Thanks!

Gregg,

I noticed the other day that you had implemented a user classifieds link under the user gallery link, but now neither is being shown?

The gallery link has always been really useful, and even though only a small percentage of users would be posting advertisements, the classifieds link was interesting too. Do you have any plans to re-implement at least the gallery link?

And welcome to MTBR eatsleeprunbike!

Cheers, Dave.

I just posted 2 ads (sorry, not meant to spam) and missed the postal code (Canadian, eh?!?!) in one of my ads. It wouldn't complete the final step untill I entered it. Worked for me. The price I can't comment on as I had that correct from the start.

And since it's been mentioned - any help for us Canucks that have a xxx xxx Postal Code format to help prospective purchasers "figure out" shipping? Just curious. Not sure it'd make a difference either way as "we" would have to/should get a quote anyways.

And one more blab that I was going to post anyways .....

CANADIANS!!!!! - please be sure to put the word Canada somewhere in your ad. We can find each other's ads easier. It doesn't matter if it's in the Description or the Keywords text, just get it in there somewhere. PATIA!

Hey guys!

Question with regards to the Comments footer - is there any way these can be made to provide an e-mail notification? Or maybe they are and I missed it? I just noticed I received one and didn't have a clue it was there.

I'm just curious to know if it's "our" sole responsibility to tend to or if we can get a little help.

I'd like to leave postive feedback for a seller from a recent transaction. Can you tell me how to do this? I've been looking all over, but maybe it's right in front of my face somewhere?

Thanks! Great work on the classifieds, BTW!

“Other Components” or “Other Accessories” sounds logical to me.

The search function could come in handy too.

Hey Chris, you have to click on the sellers username to access their "profile" (it says "For Sale By" then their username is below). That'll take you to another page - it's there that you will find the option to leave feedback.

As for my Q - I think I found it. Same area where you select the option to Edit Ad or mark SOLD IT!. I'll give it a shot and see what happens. Someone wanna do me a favour PLEASE?!?!??!?! Go to my ad for seatposts and put something in the Comments box so I can see if it worked????? PATIA!

Here's a link to make it handy (NOT meant to be spam just a test).

Quick question what's the best way to call "dibs"? should an email be sent to the seller or will a quick reply added to the ad be the best way to get an item first.

Hey Gregg & Mike:

Any way to make it easier to search for ads for items in Canada? (Shipping used stuff across the border can be a real pain in the...)

The distance by zip code doesn't work for us since we have postal codes instead.

If you added a "Canada" location button or something I think you would get a LOT more Canadians posting ads.

Really up the seller, I would think.

For example, even though buyer X is not the highest "bidder" or "first" person to respond, the seller may choose to go with buyer X over buyer Y because buyer X is local.

So, given scenarios like that, I think it best to go with seller's choice instead of purely on a first response "system".

If the sellers use their noodle and put the word Canada in their ad somewhere (like I pointed out above) then it's taken care of. IMHO, and I know it means little in this case, it's up to the seller. I know, I KNOW, not the same as what you're talking about. I believe you might be referring to something more like a flagging system of some sort?

You have problems shipping to the U.S.????? REALLY?!?!??!?!??!? I can understand receiving from the U.S., but sending???? REALLY?!??!?!???!!? Please, DO share. (or just send me a P.M. if you don't want to hi-jack the thread)

Hey, Mr. Moto,

This feature is working now, please give it a test (either send yourself a message, or have a registered friend send you a message via the "Contact Seller" link).

Sorry for the delay, it was intermittent and a little hard to track down.

Please LMK if you are still having any difficulties.

2 fast questions:

1) How do I remove my ad once I've sold something?

2) Is there any way to make it easier for the buyer to leave feedback? Right now, he/she has to navigate several screens, and most buyers aren't motivated to do all that.

To remove an ad

1) From the classifieds main page click "My Ads" in the upper left corner.
2) The next screen will be a summary of your ads. Click the title of the ad you want to remove from the "Ads" column.
3) This will bring up the detailed description of the ad. At the bottom of the ad, underneath the description and keywords will be a check box that says "Delete Ad". Check the box and then click the "Submit" button.
4) Poof! the ad is history.

Gregg will have to address the feedback issue.

There is no check box that says "Delete Ad". These are the checkboxes:

Add to Watch List · Report Product · Buy It Now · Receive Email Updates · Post Comment
Edit Ad · RELIST IT!

We are working on the server performance issue that some of you have been running into to.

This is a hardware related issue mostly, and it will take some "resources" to speed things up.

We have resources marked for this, but it won't happen for a while. Basically, we're going to take the old classifieds server offline (after the last ads placed have run their full 30 days), and re-allocate this server to the new classifieds.

Thanks for your patience. In the meantime, we'll keep trying to tweak different things to make it faster.

To piggyback on the feedback issue - I bought an item from the classifieds, and would like to leave positive feedback, but since the ad is now removed, is there a way to leave feedback?

The seller pulled the ad as soon as I committed to the sale, but I wasn't in a position to leave feedback since I hadn't yet received the item.

Any help?

Thanks in advance!

Cheers, Chris

First of all - it seems that you typed a RELIST IT(!) option, but your screen capture shows SOLD IT!. Perhaps issues are confused here?

Second, if you've SOLD IT(!) then mark it as such.

Third - mark it in your ad, right at the very top of the description page, like this;

BRAKES ARE SOLD!

You can even put it in bold;

BRAKES ARE SOLD!

That should help to catch people's attention and keep them from contacting you.

I would suggest keep the zip code search but please put back the city the seller is in. Having the city, state, country the seller is in tells the buyer a lot more about the legitimacy of the deal, or prehaps if they know the person selling, or maybe they saw them at some race. Worked better for me, anyway.

No confusion on my end - the screen capture is the result of following Call_me_Clyde's instructions.

I got THAT part - the screen capture was from an item that hasn't sold yet.

That ain't the point - the point is, where is this "DELETE AD" button? I want to delete the ad for my fork, not because I sold it, but because I want to put it on eBay.

Looks like LarryG spotted a problem ... the ads can be deleted by mods and admins, but not by the user who originally posted the ad.

LarryG - this is fixed now ... you should be able to see the delete checkbox

Mike, any chance of adding a country check box to the ad database?
That would allow searching by country (eg. Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, etc) to find bikes and parts locally. MTBR gets a lot of international users, but from what I've seen classified users are mostly in the US, probably for this reason.

How to post feedback on a transaction ...

Go to the ad ... find the user's classifieds profile link under the text "For Sale By". Click that and you'll get a page where you can leave feedback.

I know this is burried as we have 3 different profile pages (galleries, forums, classifieds ... well, four now with the new blogs) We're hoping to roll all these profile pages into one sometime soon

Good idea. I've added a Country text box to the post ad form. (Checkbox might work/look better, but we'll see how it pans out.) I'll add a Country column to the ad listing page once we get some ads with Country data in them.

I also think the supersize is too small. make it the same size as the ebay supersize. images were bigger before in the old classifieds, no steps backwards, please.

Hey Crew,
I just tried to buy a classified item. It had a "Buy it Now" option, which conveniently linked me directly to PayPal. Quick. Easy. Nice! However, the seller wrote me back the next day saying the item was sold 6 hours earlier, and hit me up with the PayPal fee and some bogus-sounding "refund fee". Hmmm...

Did I get:
- scammed, or
- just abused by a bad seller, or
- did I mess up?

If that is the way the Classified BIY system is supposed to work, what's the point of a "Buy it Now" option, if you still have to contact the seller, wait for replies, etc? I would think that in a real BIT system would be in real time.

Thanks...

I just sold a seat post via by it now and as soon as the item was sold the ad automatically displayed SOLD. Therefore someone couldn't pay me again for something that had already been paid for. I assume in your case the seller did not sell it via buy it now and did not then change the status of the item to sold manually.

Hi Gregg, my experience with the new server when navigating to/within is that it is extremely slow. Most of the time when I try to navigate to and within classifieds I get this.....:

I have checked my connection...all is good and I have not encountered this problem with other sites. If it is happening to me, possible it could be happening to others. Could be the reason I have not received many hits on my add too.

Also, I recently put a shock up for sale and I still got one of those 'reply to add' from a scammer wanting to pay for the item with a cashiers check for more than the amount that I asked for it. You can always tell because the email has the same verbage. Only one so far with the new add, so it is much better than the old in that I am not bombarded with these requests. So great job on that front. I wish there was some way string these idiots up by their toes and connect some sadistic torture device to their "Pork and Beans".

I'm having similar problems as Mtn. Biker123. Getting in to the forums or the classifieds is painfully slow, and at least 70% of the time the daily market seems to be down, and I see nothing. Just an FYI. I still (try to) use the daily market on a daily basis, however.

Yes, it's pretty agonizingly slow for me, as well... showing the "latest updates" page often takes a few minutes, if it renders at all, and individual sale items are equally pokey...

We've made a few tweaks that should help for some. The real boost in performance won't happen until we order, receive, and dial in the new servers, which all costs time and money.

Which means, we'll be charging for basic ads soon. The money for the new hardware has to come from somewhere, unfortunately.

The "Latest Ads" page was taken down to see if it improved performance or not. It was put back up yesterday (Monday).

So, in short, performance may be better for some now, but won't get a whole lot faster for a little while longer for others.

Yeah... I started to notice problems again yesterday (Monday), but seems fine again today. Thanks Gregg. So, how much will you be charging. Hopefully not a similar format as eBay. Where you gouge the seller at the end of the action with some complicated formula designed to confuse and extort. Maybe just some sort of insertion fee?

Buyer/Seller Ethics

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have made a few purchases and even sold a few things in the MTBR classifieds. I figure as a seller I assume the ultimate responsibility of providing a comfortable transaction for the buyer. The buyer assumes the burden of providing the money upfront in "good faith" that he/she has engaged in a transaction that is honest and as described by the sellers add.

With that said, I made a purchase last Saturday from the MTBR classifieds. I made an offer slightly less than the sellers asking price and he agreed. Without hesitiation I transferred the funds via paypal. The seller was very responsive to my emails at first and even agreed to do a slight modification to the item prior to shipment. The last correspondance from the seller was last Tuesday when I was notified that the item would ship USPS priority. Even though it was not stated, I assumed that it would be shipped that day (Tuesday) or the following day. Being that I usually receive priority shipments within two days of the shipment notification, I contacted the seller on Thursday just to verify the actual ship date and when I should expect the package. No response. I cantacted him again last night to let him know that I still had not received the package. Again no response. I can see that he is actively posting and viewing on MTBR, so I sent another message via PM after the mail came to express my frustration. I am not so worried that I got scammed as this individual has been an active member here for some time (I did do my research). I am concerned about the possibility that the package got lost in the system. Not through personal experience, but I have heard horror stories about USPS.

As the Seller, should there be a protocal one should follow when it comes to providing a comfortable line of communication with the buyer? Is it a lot to ask of a Seller to keep the buyer informed of all the details of the transaction? Should MTBR suggest or provide guidelines for sellers to follow for buyers who assume most of the risk. Assuming I don't recieve the package and I am unable to contact the seller, do I contact the administrators of MTBR or use the resolution center on paypal? What is the grace period for non-receipt of an item before I take action to dispute the transaction?

_Bryan

Time for ad to display after payment...

After I have submitted an ad and paid via Paypal, how long does it take for the ad to show up in the Classifieds section? I paid a couple hours ago and my status still shows as "payment not received for ad", yet my Paypal ad shows that the payment has been completed.

Sorry, there is not.

The ONLY way to get back at the top is to post a new ad.

Duplicate Adds Posted?

Yesterday I posted an add titled "2005 Specialized Big Hit Grom" and today I posted an add titled "2003 Specialized Enduro Pro 2003 size Large". Each add showed up twice on the classified forum.

While processing the credit card payment for each add I was first told that there was a problem and had to go back and process it again. Did my payment and add go through twice for each add or something? If so, please do not charge my credit card twice for each add and please delete the second of each add so there are not duplicates.

How do ads get renewed? More specifically how do I renew an ad placed in March?

paypal done-still no add?

MikeG;
Similar question...my Paypal account shows the payment was received right away, but my add's status shows it's awaiting payment.....

Any ideas?

contact seller feature working?

Gregg,

Do you know if the contact seller feature is working? I've tested it and and had it tested by others but have received no emails. Have had many "views" but have not received a single response to my ad.

Here's a link to my ad:

Go to classifieds, then click "My Ads". Click on the ad you want to delete. From there, Scroll down to the bottom and LOOK HARD!. Bottom right hand corner will be a check box marked "DELETE"

Couple of dumb questions. I just placed an ad.

I assume I will know if I have a bite only if I get a private message, or an e-mail for notification since I set that up to work?

Second question: is it kosher to mention my ad in a regular thread which is specific to my Newark Delaware area? Especially since I have limited it to local pickup only.
