April Gathering - No Foolin' 2007
Yeah... It's that time of year again Spring is almost here... Mark your calendars, ask for that vacation time now....make plans to attend!
SO WHEN'S IT HAPPENING?
The camp will open on Thursday March 29, 2007 at 3pm.
Please disperse by 2pm Sunday April 1st so we can go home.
WHERE, MAN, WHERE ??
Lower Cove Creek Group Camp, Pisgah National Forest.
WHAT'S THE DEAL ?
Show up and have a good time! May have a couple of semi-unorganized activities, but plan to be bored , mostly everybody can just hang out, ride, visit, eat, drink, hang with old friends, and make new ones. I don't really care what you do as long as you're having fun, not hurting anybody, and not destroying the campground.
ACTIVITIES ?
* Semi-organized ride - Most folks that show up will be locals that know their way around the trails pretty well.
we may do another Dupont or a Bent Creek Ride one day, but we'll have to consolidate vehicles so we don't have another 20+ car wagon train down 64!
We'll see what happens, but rest assured you will get a darned good ride in, and nobody will be left in the woods. Meet at the fire ring for details
* Big ol' Fire ( Tomato - you're in charge)- Jamie & I'll make sure we have plenty of firewood for the community fire. Individual ground fires are not allowed.
* Is that all you even lazier promoter than Supercracker Zach? - Yep, that's about it. Ya'll are a bunch of creative, resourceful folks. You'll find plenty to do. Besides, I'm no promoter.... I'm just some random person who rented a campsite. Thanks to Droop for frontin' the cash for this thang to happen!
WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING, AND WHAT WILL BE THERE?
Cove Creek is a large open meadow down in a mountain valley. It's really pretty, and there's tons of space. There is an Upper camping Section and a Lower Section 'We're in the LOWER...Tried to get both, the other wasn't available... so we'll have to respect the folks on the other end of the meadow! that also means folks from the other camp area will be traveling through our meadow. That's just about all there is.
You'll have a place to set your camp, vault toilets, a fire ring, and a creek with nice waterfall a little ways upstream. If you need anything other than that, you probably ought to bring it with you. Seriously.... There is water but, no food, no trash cans. Plan to be self-sufficient. Campfires can only be in provided rings , Darrin had a great portable fire pit at the last gathering and that worked great, but NO digging your own pit for a fire! thanks
DOESN'T SEEM LIKE A GOOD DEAL TO ME.
Well, the good news is that it's free. I'm not claiming anything grand.... I'm just hoping that having a time and place will get the snowball rolling. If ya'll show up, we'll have a blast regardless of any fancy planning.
ALRIGHT THEN, HOW DO I GET THERE?
I-26 take the Asheville Airport / Arden exit 40 (old exit 9) and go south on NC 280 for 16 miles.
At the intersection with US 64/276, turn right onto US 276 (Pizza Hut on Right) and enter the National Forest. (Big Stone Gates) Pass the Ranger Station and Davidson River campground. Turn LEFT passed stone bridge Towards the Fish Hatchery, and continue as pavement ends and gravel begins stay straight on 475A and Cove Creek is a couple miles on your right. There is a gate and you'll need to close the gate behind you! (gate must remain closed at all times...too many rules)
From the South its easier to take the hwy 64 exit in Hendersonville and head to Brevard then straight into the park. follow above directions
WARNING - You must drive across a creek to enter the camp. It's not a big deal Any normal car can make it, but please do be aware of the weather and realize that the creek could rise and become impassible should we have a big rain.
RULES (Booooo !)
Well, I'm not "in charge".... I'm just providing a campsite. But please, PLEASE.... be cool and don't be destructive, violent, angry, or stupid. I can't and won't enforce any rules, and I can't and won't be watching out for people. Take care of your neighbor, and don't tear stuff up. If you do, I'll have to pay for it and that would make me sad. I AM NOT CLAIMING RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANYTHING, YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN. If the Ranger shows up and you are burning down the outhouse, I will deny all responsibility and help him put the cuffs on you.
Ride and play at your own risk. Please do not sue me. Seriously. I can't afford it.
Picking up your trash and toting it out would make me very happy, and would help keep me from being late to work on Monday morning.
stay posted for gate combo the week prior to the Gathering!
-Brad

One last non-rule I think should be included:
PLEASE shut the gate after going through - even if you didn't open it in the first place. Don't give Mr./Ms. Ranger Sir/M'am a migrain from riding up and down the road all day to remind the happy campers about official rules.
It makes him/her a very unhappy Ranger. That makes for unhappy campers.

The Date!
Note i tried to change the Thread Header with no luck of course
The Date of the Gathering is March 29 through the 1st of April
Not April 07.... so if you show up on the seventh, you're crashin' someone elses gig!

Darnnit!
Planning a ski trip to the west mountains with the family that week, will probably be down there a few weeks later though...prolly end of April or early May.
Hey Brad, I don't think we're gonna do the August Crested Butte CO trip like we were talking. Thinking about August trip to Snowshoe WV instead...I'll keep you posted on plans.

I can bring some firewood if need be Brad , just let me know, I'm sure Tomato wouldn't mind. Sorry about last time when I brought wood to the Double Dare and wasn't able to hangout. If I can get things squared away with work hopefully this time I can drink some beers with all the homies. Hey Tomato, don't end up like Beavis, I have came very close. Alcohol, Fire, and Gasoline are a nasty combo

Sorry for the newbie question...is this the same field/camp used for this years Swank 65? Also, I'm assuming it's OK to camp for one night, and not the entire weekend? With a toddler it may be all we can do to pull off one night of camping.

Yes, and Yes... with toddler, you're brave! Late March temps are pretty chilly (have been the last 4 April Gatherings - snowed two years ago) went riding today in 70*F in Janurary, so who know's what it'll be like in a couple of months. come on out!

Brado- try contacting our moderator to change the heading.
Sweet, should be there.
Starting with this event, March-May now looks like this:
Pisgah Gathering
Knobscorcher
Cohutta 100
PMBAR
12 Hours of Tsali
24 Hours of Burn, if happening (Eddie?? Website not updated...)
I don't know about y'all, but to me the South appears to have it going on...

Rich, not saying that was my March-April, saying that's the South's.
So, yes, for some people , there will be a conflict with the Cohutta and "some other event."
Advance congrats to the others, by the way.

Whoa - now there's a pic Old Pharts can relate to! I especially loved the one I have on a disc of a family member looking on with this expression:
I also have some post-crash Slarti & The Sock wedding photos on a floppy. That too was a special event. The Shop That Dare Not Speak It's Name and the wedded couple are still going strong - last I heard. Sigh... Romance mixed with bikes is so cool. Anybody want to elope at the gathering?

Yeah, it's definitely worth checking out. I haven't been there in quite sometime, so I can't really comment on what has changed in the last 10 years. Here is a link that can maybe answer some of your questions: http://www.hotspringsnc.org/

We try to do it at least twice a year, in April before the Seasonal trails close, and in the Fall right after the Seasonals open in October...

From WV
Brad,
How's it going? This is Dave and we met a while back talking bikes online and met in person at the 24 Hours of Pisgah. I'm friends with Ken, Tony, Tim, Darrin in case you don't remember me.
Looks like I will finally make it to the gathering this year. Since I'm usually in Pisgah up to 5 times per year this will be visit number 1 for '07 I'm probably going to have 4 to 5 other people with me. One guy has been down before, the others new. If you need a ride leader for some of the outta-towners I'd be happy to help.
Give me a yell sometime. Maybe we can get a group from your neck of the woulds to come to WV in the Tea Creek area of the Monongahela Nat. Forest to camp and ride.

first time for pisgah
So a me and a friend are thinking about making a trip down that weekend from baltimore. Hope out of towners are welcome! we just happened to see the advertisement while poking around mtbr. We have never been to pisgah so my real question is about the trails (uphills/downhills) and what bike to bring. I have a SC heckler that is built really burly for freeride/downhill, which is the kind of riding I mainly do. Its in the upper 30lb range but could be lightened up. I also have a hardtail which is my more AM/cross country bike. If someone could tell me just what the trails we will be riding are like it would be great. Cant wait till april, this event sounds great! thanks
OH and partying and camping go along real well, so will we be seeing that type atmosphere

bring a bike you can pedal uphill. The trade off isn't worth the added hike-abiking you'll be doing with a big bike. There's some proper dh trails here but you have to earn them.

1. Yes
2. Yes
3. Depends
4. Super
5. It'll work fine
6. Yes
So bring both bikes or at least bring the options for the bike you do bring. There are some trails that are more suited to a lighter bike for pedal friendliness and some that are better suited (more fun) if set up more beefy and DH friendly. BUT, all of them can be ridden by any kind of bike, it just depends on what you're used to and what you want to do.
I sometimes pedal a 36 pound FSer for 40-50 miles and love it, but I go at my pace and I know I can go the distance. I also have plenty fun on my slightly lighter hardtail that's set up with beefy tires and a thru-axle front fork. All depends on what you want out of the ride.
This type of gathering will have many different rides going on, so bring what you want with options: tires, shocks, etc. Around the campfire you will eventually meet up with people that match your riding style and find your niche.

This sounds pretty cool... Was poking around here http://www.mtbikewnc.com/index.html and was thinking I should get down there to explore some this spring... Then I found the gathering, very cool. So will there be a good amount of riding or is it more of a partying thing? It's a good drive from Pa., so I'd like to see a fair bit of the trails. I can donate a case of America's Oldest brew, Yuengling, to the cause.
How far is this from the Tsali Trails? I was thinking of heading down early and spending two days at Tsali and then hit the gathering on the way back up.
Enjoy life's ride, Mike

There is alwasy lots of riding opertunities and lots of partying and lots of riding with hangovers. Something for everyone.
Tsali is roughly 2-1/2 hours drive from the site of the gathering.

Chalk another person up, I'd like to join in on the riding goodness. This will be my first time riding in the Brevard/Asheville area...I moved to the Winston area in August, and have had no time to make a weekend trip. See everyone in a couple weeks!

Fire wood?
Is there a shortage of firewood for the Gathering, or is this covered by other pyros. I am coming and have tons of deadfall on my land. I would need to know by tomorrow b/c I am out of town all week and would need to breakout the chainsaw tom. or Sunday.

Beside's the official fire ring, there may be a few Pyro's with portable pits, but if that Tomato guy show's up... well, let's just say: You bring it, he'll burn it.

Or, leave it for the next group using the site.

I consider myself the master of the fire pit. I'd challenge the tomato to a flame off but I think the first to blink would loose his eye lashes. I don't think a few more logs will be a problem. Didn't marshal say he was bringing a truck load? Two in the hand is better than what the hell am I talking about. Don't listen to me I've had one too many homebrews.

Don't think I'll be able to make this spring gathering, I'll plan on the fall fiesta again.
Also, we cruised thru the Cove Creek site last weekend and the pump handles were not on the water pump. So plan on taking your own water. Or maybe a quick call to the ranger station to see if/when there will be water available. Didn't venture to the upper site, so I don't know if it has water or not...
BTW: y'all might recognize me by the sweet ass showcased in the original post

Yeah, I'll be bringing a load of wood on Thursday. Gonna try and camp Saturday night if everything goes according to planned. Regardless, I will be bringing some wood for the pyros to enjoy even if I don't camp

Considering how your Double Dare weekend turned out, you & K have to at least show up to see the un-Official Fire Contest. It wil be a One-pit Wonder competition, and I'm unsure how the scoring can be be tallied, so you & 4000psi may end up being be the deciding judges. Then again, we could always add a secondary contest with the portables. I'd like to bring the one-time-used-on wheels free unit I was given and will gladly pass it on to anyone who wants it. If I can get it over there and.... if it survives the gathering.
BTW: Everybody "thanked you" thoughout DD.... except maybe Brad-o, who Bob'd most of the burn from the lost section on a SS.

I am hopeful that we'll be able to , just have to wait and see. I was hoping to be back on the bike already, but it looks like it's gonna be June or July at the earliest. I am feeling good physically, but I can't risk having a crash. I was really looking forward to seeing if anyone would be interested in trying to build one of these , oh well, some other time.

I'm not from the area, so this may sound like a dumb question to some of the locals, but do i need to bring provisions to hang a bear bag with my food? or is this not an area where my truck will get jacked if i have food in it? (seen one too many "when good animals go bad" specials with bears busting in windows to get a snickers bar)...thanks

What? Are you really worried about natural wildlife or mountain bikers? Well, since there are NO Dumb Questions....
With all of the people and noise thoughout the weekend, bears will not be an issue. Campground tame raccoon/opossums/squirrels/crows, hungry mountain bikers and wild dogs might be cause for concern, so don't leave your foods and shinny stuff out or unattended. I'd suggest a simple crate or to put foods in the car. (BTW: Crows are the worst of the list. I've seen them haul off whole loaves of bread and some very heavy key sets. Often wondered if that's where Team Dickey's key fob ended up - in some tree on Thompson Loop at Tsali to later be found by... nevermind...)
A clean camp spot is a happy camp spot. Please help the hosts by bringing bags and hauling your stuff out. (There are dumspters at Sycamore rec area.)

Hey all. I know it's early in the season but with the unseasonably warm weather, has anyone noticed yellowjackets (as a potential problem for those allergic) being an issue? Here in WV, the wasps, bees, and Japanese wasps have been out in horads.
Also, I know it's a bit out of the way for the gathering, but my buddies and I plan to do Kitsuma on the way home. Anyone know it's condition right now?
A few of my buddies have never done Dupont so I'm hoping to have an epic day out there if anyone is interested.
This is going to be an incredibly fun weekend!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It was hot yesterday maybe 80. Saw a few wasps and bees but I think there all looking for a place to set up the hive. If your deathly allergic, I recommend packing you epipen or whatever. I doubt it will be a problem but it's always good to be prepared when venturing out into the wild woods. It's been dry and all the trails are in good condition.

*nudge nudge* *wink wink*
Commercial activity of any kind is prohibited in the forest,
but if a few bucks happened to fall out of your pocket in front
of The Brado, and if he were to pick them up, I'm sure it would
help him defray the not-insignificant cost of renting the camp.
Hypothetically speaking.
I'm sure that, hypothetically speaking, if he were to find a
sum of money lying around that were more than the cost
of renting the camp, that any such surplus would probably
be gladly donated to a certain local advocacy group that
we all love.
Hypothetically speaking.
I think I hurt my hypothalamus.
See ya'll this weekend !

Calling all 5'6"-5"9 SS 29er Riders
Hey, let's all set up out tents right together and drink the same beer, and leer at everyone else because they ride gears/suspension, are tall, have good hygiene, don't use funny looking bars, and have shuttled Bennett at least once.
Actually, I just wanted to encourage anyone with a smaller SS 29er to bring it and let me take a short spin. Haro, KM, Monocog, El Mariachi, Vassago, Zion etc...
I just found a hole and crack in my chainstay and am trying to figure out my options. Cheap is key because we'll have a baby girl in May and she'll need things like food and clothing.
So when is everyone showing up?

beer[quote=Singletrack Pig] gears/suspension, are tall, have good hygiene
Hey, I can stink with the best of them! Gears and tallness has nothing to with hygiene, it is mostly overly abused knees from a lifetime of ruff housing. Looking forward to the weekend and should be arriving around lunchtime (dinnertime for yall who call it that) Friday.I am trying to bring some firewood if I make it home on thursday night.

That is the most horrible lead into riding gears that I have ever read.
I think TD has got you right on with the zion, cheap, altered in every fashion, steel, ridden by a experienced jerk, need I go on?
I would let you ride my Drunken Monkey but a fall from that height could prove fatal. Especially for a rider who wears the fishy variety of pants.
Kristin and I will be there Friday evening. Maybe just in time to start 72 hours of Farlow.

Are you serious?
The gathering is this weekend and there is no pep-talks, trash talk, beer talk, bike talk. GET WITH IT PEOPLE. What do you have jobs or something? MTBR takes precedence over everything.
On a more serious note before I start with the non-sense. Kristin will be hiking and will gladly accept applications for those who might want to hike with her.
Please fill out the following questionaire:
Do you hike and not bike?
Are you living?
If you answered yes, yes, there is a chance you could be eligible.
Now on with the smack:
Who is going to pretend like they are faster than TD so he will try and wrestle you at midnight?
Who is going to let Jody ride their custom 29'er so he can crack it and tell you he thinks the bottom bracket is to low?
What's going to happen if M-U-M doesn't bring the glowy pink flamingooo for a night-pee-light?
Who is going to find Brado's camera in the middle of the night and take a video of the explosions?
Who volunteers to ride up and down cove creek until the ice cream freezes?
Isn't someone going to mistakingly say that we should ride Candey Bottoms?
Doesn't some DH group want to shuttle Farlow while another group tries to climb it?
PATHETIC.

Hmmm...smack talk...
Seeing I haven't made it to the gathering yet after 3 other failed attempts (this one I'm definitely at), and that I don't know too many people... I do know a few very well like Darrin, Tony, Tim, Malcom from Savannah, Tommy, Brad as an acquaintance from 24 Hours of Pisgah, JT, Joe and few others I can't recall off hand...I bet I can beat the guys I named to the top of 475A to Cove Creek
or maybe I shouldn't smack talk...I might just get my arse handed to me

IT's not so much about riding smack talk as it is about smack talk in general.
Like this, I can call out SingleTrackPig, Broussard and a few others whom I don't know their screen names because I was the one who shot gunned a warm budwieser at 10:00on Sunday morning at the Icycle.
Take that beeetches.

My smack is amature at best.
However, it must come to an end for the day. It is time to ride my bike instead of typing about it
Watch out, Broussard has found the top keys on his board. YIKES>

Awww, man
I thought that was just between you, me, your cousin and the pig!
Knew that pic would show up to haunt me some day. At least I didn't break the pig.
Well MR. Fancy Pants with your new pearly white WRX with the nice silver wheels that perfectly matches your new custom pearly white bike and silver shiny bits- payback's a coming. Maybe I'll have to just take a big loose post oyster dinner dump in your hood scoop(count me back in Brado!).
So there.

I though hard about it. Of the 16,366 people who have incriminating photos of me,
I'm pretty sure you have some that I phear the most. If all I get in return is a loaf
on my hood, I'll call it good.
Speaking of gatherings and incriminating photo's,we should all just be glad that we
don't have any nauseatingly detailed pictures of our anuses floating around out there.
Well, most of us don't, anyway.

The Lighted Fla-ming-gawd took a dive off the porch at Icycle and lost it's legs. May end up in a creative roost position this trip.
No smack talk here. Just looking forward to the weekend!
