FR builders/riders in Central PA!!
Hey there everyone, the fall season is here and we are going to be starting to build again here in Lock Haven (35min from State College and Williamsport). We have been given permission to build on this mountian behind my house, and as of last year we have been taking advantage of this by building FR/downhill trails. All of the current stuff has been built by just two guys. I was out back scouting today for things we would like to build and realized we are going to need help this time, ladder work, bigger jumps and step-up's. Also new ideas, we would love to hear other ppls thoughts on what they may want to build. We have tools (chainsaws, winches, shovels, rakes, even and old CJ jeep to get us and the bikes out there). I have pictures if anyone would like to see what is going on so far, but more help is appreciated fto get a few more projects done. Obviously, you help build, you ride anytime you want.
Just so you all dont think we are 12yr olds, building little jumps here is a list of what we have so far. 3-4 decent riding berms with small launches built along one main trail with 4 branches, 2 paletted berms into a downhill launch (eventual step-up and bottom of run), a 23ft table-top (a hip jump to go in once we get enough ppl to help build). Like I said it would be worth a little drive just to come and ride what we currently have, but def. worth it if you wanted to see something you have thought about building put into action. Thanks again.
P.S. If anyone rides street/dirt jumps, we have a pretty nice bmx scene down here that has been cool enough to let us use their dirt jumps, as long as we keep them mantained.

Duffy,
good to see you haven't given up on this project. i really wish i had some more time and energy to get up and see firsthand what you are building. what i have seen so far really does seem to point to a good amount of potential.

Well thanks thanks for the props, I guess. Umm, I thought brandon paided you for the bike? I know his cash went somewhere at the bike shop. The black paint on the bike is that what has you upset? Yeah I have seen your remarks throughout the message boards and whatnot, but I just figured we all had more riding to do so I might as well not comment. I thought it was $750 for the bike? I admit seems cheap, but is that what you said? If Brandon did not pay you for the bike, then I personally will pay you what he owes yet on the thing, and he can pay me back later. All I wanted (and I am sure he does too) is to get some freeride trails going on in central PA, we have been working hardcore to get what we have, and I kinda thought there may be some others around here that might be interested in riding and helping.
Well I dont want this to seem like a personal chat between you and me, but can we try to clear this up, so we have a larger group of riders in the area.
To everyone else watching this drama unfold come check it out for yourselves, the trails that is. I dont think we are that disrespectful to other riders, so if you are interested get ahold of me and we can set up a time to ride or work on some of our local stuff.

Duffy,
i don't want to drag out the details, so i sent you a PM. short of it is, he paid me almost half the 750. the painting only bugs me that i never got the rest and hence the bike isn't his to paint.
anyway, if that gets worked out, i'll be more than happy to check out the trails. i'm sure others will also, there are a lot of big bikes rolling around town.

I'd definitely like to see pics of what you've got already. I was just talking to my buddy Nate (screen name: be350ka) about wanting to put together some Freeride-type stuff. I'd be down with doing some building as time permits. And like Don said, there are quite a few guys in town here (State College) riding big bikes. Maybe word could be spread around the local bikes shops here to see if anyone else would be interested.
Keeps us posted on when you're going to have workdays and maybe we can hook something up. What type of terrain features are you looking to build? Just for reference I'm a definite FR newb so I'd love to have some progressive-type terrain features. Not that I'm trying to dictate what should be built (definitely not, so please don't take it that way), but if it's gonna be all 15' high skinnies and 40' gap jumps then it's out of my league and I'm probably not gonna be interested. If there will be a mix of intermediate/black diamond/double black type terrain features then that sounds cool to me.
I just re-read your post and the stuff you guys have built so far sound awesome and right up my alley. And I don't have anything against skinnies, per se, just as long as I can get some practice on some low ones. Anyway, now I'm babbling. Bottom line, I'm interested in helpin out.
Keep us posted (and post pics if you got 'em).
Patrick

Yeah there are alot of logs in that jump, it is actually a tabletop (25ftgap) but the dirt around there is so hard to dig, plus we has alot of dead fall we had to clean up so we just threw it in the backside, it is solid though. Land consitantly straight is what is giving us the hard time, ha.

I didn't mention we are throwing a teeter-totter in at some point, it is pretty much all assembled and everything we just have to mount it to the log and it is ready to ride. Here are a few more pics

WOW Duffy,
you guys have been busy since last i saw.
i've got 2 suggestions for the building portions:
1. when you need dirt, dig it from the exposed rootball of a blown down tree. it is really easy to dig there.
2. most of those features are built with logs. they are going to change as the logs decompose, so keep your eyes peeled for stuff starting to feel questionable. and keeping them somewhat exposed is nice too so you can look at them and see how much they have rotted. if you fill them completely with dirt, you'll lose that option.
if you guys can actually schedule a work day / days in advance, i'm sure we can get some interested people involved. the notice is the hardest part.

Yeah, what Don said.
What you got so far looks awesome. Get us some advance notice on workdays (weekends are best for me, I'm a Mon-Friday guy) and we can carpool a group up from State College.
Man, jumps, berms and everything. Don, we need some berms on our local trails. And jumps. And less rocks. And no climbing. Sorry, I'm just dreaming of days filled with chairlift rides and downhill runs.
Seriously, Duffster, keep us posted.

Hey,
we built a berm for you Patrick. it's not our fault that it is made out of rock. what else do we have to build with??? certainly not dirt.
i put some other stuff in up on tussey. opened an optional line and put in a small log ride. i'm working on some more. might go out today and do some work. depends on the rain.
agreed weekends work best. i'm usually off sundays.

On tux, is that where you're referring to? Yeah, that's actually some sweet rock work. Unfortunately, i usually skip that section and go up/down Kettle.
You're absolutely right in that there isn't any dirt. Which hurts when you fall. Which I do (a lot).

Nice, I haven't been up there recently. I like to ride the ridge from the gas line towards Bear Meadows Road (and I hate going the other way), but since the camp trail is off limits for a while I haven't done it. I could approach from the other extension, but I just haven't had the motivation to go that way yet.

Nice. Let me know if you're heading up there on any weekends. I've haven't been keeping too close tabs on the nmba site, but I haven't seen any work parties recently. Keep me posted.

Patrick,
most of this stuff i've been doing during a few spare hours on my wednesdays off. i usually just go out to the forest early for the wed 6pm ride.
i bagged it today blamed it on the weather, but i should have gone. the rain held out till 5 or so.
weekend days for working would only be on sundays as i work most saturdays. it's getting to be a good time of year for building as it gets too cold for me to ride anymore.
i'll see about letting you know if i get out on any sundays.

Hey Duffy
Hey Duffy, I was in the bike shop the other day with my new Pike while you were working on your bike. I have access to allot of "scrap" wood at work. I wood like to help you out with your project sometime. I currenly have a good stock pile of wood here at the house, but I have a shed project in the spring to do with it. After that I will see if I can hook you up with some usable lumber.
I have pretty good wood working skills. See my pictures, this is a little ramp project I did.
Looking at your pictures make me think twice about selling my Gemini, oh well I still have the Heckler I'm currently building up a little stronger that I can huck a little.

I'd be interested in visiting sometime to share ideas. It is a little bit of a drive from my place (in Bloomsburg), but I'd give it a try. I'm not afraid to work. You could come run some of our trails sometime if you are interested, but it might be a little bit more tame than some of your stuff.

Kudos on the ramp building spacoli, is that box set local here in Lock Haven? It looks really nice, quite a few tranny possiblities on that thing.
Yeah you far surpass any of our woodworking skills, we pretty much build as we go, a little bit of planning just laying out the trail, but then the man-made stuff just pops up all over.
Once you all get down here some time, you will see that almost every feature has some type of optical illusion built into it. Yeah, never try to first run any of the stuff up here, with out walking through it first. Everything has been ridden, so at least it has been done by someone, ha.
Jamie, you should definitely come up, give us your input. And we would like to rip anywhere different, change in scenery is always welcome.
And for anyone that may be worried about some of the stuff built so far, have no fear. We are some of the sketchiest bikers you will ever see, so if we made it you can too. Plus watch us and your buddies crash, always good for a laugh!
And we are up for any type of terrain feature, nothing is to lame to put in the trails. I am sure we have already built the worst ideas anyone can come up with, ha. Anything can be made more difficult by just throwing speed into it.
Once everyone gets a general idea of what we want to build, you all can feel free to stop in and work whenever you want (obviously ride whenver you want too, just dont wipe out by yourself out there)
I suck at planning, so how about I leave a standing offer. Either myself or the other guy that helps build are usually working at some point every weekend. I alternate working at the local bike shop (The Bike Gallery) every other weekend, but we close at 3. So stop in around that time. I am still a sissy about throwing out the cell #, but if you PM me, I will hook you up, no problem.

Duffy, I had built that stuff up and ended up giving it all away to the local skateboarder. I think he still has some of the 4' ramps and platforms, set up in a tennis court in our development. I could probably get those back and hall them up there and you can work them in to something.

Hey there everyone,
I will be out working on the trails, weather permiting this Saturday (21st). If anyone would like to join me feel free, I can give directions and if we get enough people, or screw it whoever shows up, we will go grab some food and make some type of a respectable meal. Next time I will get more notice out to ya.
Didn't take any pics today, but I have started on framing ladder work and everything. But what we work on on Saturday can be whatever you all would want to, plus bring your bikes if you want, I dont care if you all just want to ride around.

Use dirt -- the logs and pallets are just going to crumble over time. And those pungi sticks lining the berms look lethal.

Yeah we probably should use dirt, but we are to lazy and we usually have to cut up alot of dead fall to get the trail opened. If we ever need to replace the stuff it should be easy enough. The support logs are pretty sketchy, but there are far more dangerous things out there than those. Pretty much any feature we have built has an element of lethality in it.

I'm stocking up on lumber
Hey Duffy, I started gathering up some lumber at work, plenty of 2,3,4,5,6ft 2x4s and some 2x6s. That will make good surface for all the ladders and teeters. I will see if I can get some longer 2x6s they will have some nails in but they can be pulled out. I can also get some small peices of OSB or ply wood.
PM me and let me know when I can get hold of you either a the shop or at home. I will need some direction so I can drop off the wood. I'm hoping to come up the 21st if I can, don't know what I might have going on, I'm pretty busy with a Toyota truck engine swap.
I'm pretty excited about helping out, I love building stuff.
If you built it they will come.

That would be awesome, I am trying to do the whole "north shore" thing with making own rungs and stringers and stuff, but I suck at that. So milled lumber will be awesome, I am sure everyone just wants to keep it looking clean out there and I am sure we will.
I sure hope ppl will come ride this stuff, haven't heard much in the way of actually coming down, but once you all have directions you are free to ride whenver you want. Like I said from State College, we are about 45 min. So come on down!

Ok Spacoli came through in a huge way, so now we have a ton of nice lumber. A few dumb grunts (the lockport rippers, myself et al.) that find lines and move heavy stuff, a guy that actually knows what he is doing (spacoli), and land and tools to make it all happen. So hopefully everyone is on good terms and we can get some work done. I really think this stuff could be worthy of riding, when I compare it to some of the stuff I see on other websites. During this winter, we will hopefully get some decent website up and maybe attract others to come.
Please come give your input on lines and things you would like to ride. So we build stuff for everyone to ride and practice on. Thanks

You hit on a big one here. There need to be features that allow riders who have limited FR experience to build skills. So, it would be nice to see lines that offer a variety of "hits" for different experience levels. This would be the best way to attract helpers and retain interest.

You must be talking about me Don't worry I'm thinking about that, smaller drops and wider ladders, is 4' wide enough
I do want to build some big stuff also, a nice wall would be cool. no not a brick wall.

Hey guys,
Yeah, I dont really care what we build, just want to have a greater variety of trails for everyone to frolick about on. Like I have said before, feel free to cut and layout your own lines/features/stunts on the hill. It would be cool to see the creativity of other people out here.
I will help build anything, Spacoli has a great attitude about building and riding and I am sure we both want to help progress the trails as much as possible.
Thanks for your input, and I will definitely look to incorporate a greater variety of things into the trails, but I would greatly appreciate a few sets of eyes looking and then you all throwing their ideas at me, as well. If the weather is nice tomorrow, and I get out on the trail ( I plan on it) I will take pics of areas that are currently without any obstacles and will ask for what you would like to see put in. That will be one way of getting some feed back without having to drag you guys down here.
So I will just see you all in a few hours, once the sun comes up and we get a few pics posted.

all day
I will be working all day on some type of trail project, if the rain holds off I will be out on the trails early 9ish ( have to go pick up a chainsaw). The trails are only a few min walk from my house so I can meet anyone who is free.
I just got a message from be250ka, that suggests you all may want to have a fast, smooth singletrack run. I am sure that is just something we all want to have, so why not build it. Gonna need some feedback on this one though, I do ladders/jumps but my eye for rollers and things to pump for gaining speed is a little lacking. Let me know what we want in this section as well. Wouldn't want to get to tech since this thing is designed to haul.
If it rains I will be working in my garage forming ladder sections and just piecing together things that can be moved onto the trails, when weather improves.
I should be working as long as it is light out, taking breaks just to eat and whatnot. So stop on by.
My cell is 570 660 3938, if anyone wants to reach me for directions once you get into Lock Haven.
Hope to see some people down here.

Well, there is plenty of plain old singletrack here in PA, but I think that it would be cool to have a long flowy "singletrack" run with some obstacles thrown in that can be bypassed or hit. I just keep thinking of this Whistler video that I saw where the run was really fast with tons of berms and alternate routes with big and little hits. Thus the "fast singletrack idea" with hits! It may not be possible on the land in question, but it may be worth a look to see if it would be a popular idea when considering the terrain. I would say no to the idea if it would just be another trail and lower on the fun factor since the time and effort could be spent on other projects.

Check out the top video on the left column. This is what I mean by singletrack with hits. It may not be possible, but I would LOVE to ride that stuff.

update on today
Brandon and I worked all day today and finished an awesome feature. Once I get some of the pictures he took, I will post them or I will go out and take some of my own tomorrow.
It might be a bit tricky yet, since neither one of us have hit it yet, we ran out of daylight. But it is a super stable ladder drop to a very stable landing so what could go wrong, ha.
Well if we are talking whistler type stuff, we need insane amounts of help. But for what we have around here, I scouted out a fun little section of what could make a cool single track run. I could explain all of the positives about the area, but screw that we will just have to show ya when you all come down.
Good point with the singletrack all over PA, at one point Brandon and I used to be in shape and we rode quit a bit of XC in centre and clinton counties. So we know there are plenty of places to get some rolling speed, the only thing is pedaling to get there, and on the full squishies, that is just bouncy/boring ride to the top of the hill.
Brando and I where talking about what we would like to build next and where contemplating what suggestions you all have given. Trust me, we are in no way arrogant or stuck-up, but we found it kind of counter productive for us to go out and build things that may never get ridden by anyone newer to the sport (if no one ever shows up). And since we like to build things that force us to push our limits those features may never be ridden like they were intended to be. (if this paragraph makes us seem like jerks, please read the next one)
WE WILL HELP BUILD ANYTHING!!!! If you guys come down and show us what you want to ride and give us some help in putting it together, we will build it. We are just as interested in getting more people into the sport as anyone else, and we dont want the trails to be something that forces people away. So it is completely open for anyone to make suggestions and them come down and make them into reality.
So today some of the larger projects were worked on, maybe next work day we can focus on some new things. Hope to see you guys sometime.

Sooooo, have been plugging away at the trails. Hard to believe it was only 2 weeks ago that I posted on here, whining to get some help. Ha, still bitter, just kidding.
On Sunday a good friend and his gf came over and helped me start a new section of the trail, which is going to be amazing, I really do suck for not taking more pictures. I even have had the camera up there with me, I just never remember to take pics before and after the days work.
The new sections is not very freeride at all, it is just going to be ladder/skinnies paths. This type of building I am really getting into, everyday you notice a little bit of progress and it is something that everyone can ride once we get the main line completed.
Just thought I would post an update on what is going on. Oh we just had a Lowes open up, I dont really like supporting the big corporations, but man, super cheap nails, woohoo!
Will have pics at some point here.

well, things are progressing. you've gained a lot of exposure for what your trying to do. so now people know about it, and people are interested. and i'm figuring you're a quarter of the way there to getting people to come help with the labor.
winter sucks to work tho, especially if you have to dig in frozen ground.
and lowes plain sucks. i can't stand them, but i buy stuff there cause a guy i ride with works there.

Here is an update of what everything looks like today. I have a bunch of pics, but will just attach the few that sum up with is going on out here. The last pic, is where a wall ride will be going. The big tree with the sun hitting it, will be just behind the wall. There will also be more than one way to get to that wall, so you wont have to hit the drop to ride it.
See you all on the trails.

P.S. This has all been done, since last Saturday and only with 2 people! We are turning into freaking woodsmen.

Wow, that stuff is looking awesome. When things get sorted and Don, Nate (be350ka) and I can arrange our schedules we will try to hook up a carpool up there. Although winter is coming up and I'm not sure if Don or Nate go outside at all when it's cold out.
Very cool that you guys are making such a big effort to establish a FR playground in central PA. Nice job.

Duffy,
Things are looking good, you guys did good, I can't wait to get up there and build with you.
I still have the other load of wood for you. I will try to get it Friday.
I have been wrenching on that Toyota, the engine back in and it's running, but still work to be done. U-joint tonight, muffler, tail pipe and possible bumpers tomorrow.
I got my other wheel back for the Heckler Tuesday, I haven't touched it. I will finally get to ride and set up in that new Pike. That will be a nice break for me, getting away from wrenching on the truck.
I will call you, when I know for sure about the wood.

Cool stuff Jeff. Yeah Friday I will be at the shop as usual, but just give me cell a call. My truck wont be at the house so you can drop the stuff off, or wait for my lazy self to help unload it.
Yeah man, we look forward to working with ya. The stuff you have dropped off has been such a help. We have a few fun lines already to go, just need the skill and whatnot to build them.
Not sure what you are up to on Sat. probably working on the truck, but if you want; myself and two others are going to meet at the Gallery at 3 and then head over to the house and work. Feel free to join.
Will talk to you later on.

Ok, weenies.
I went out to ride the ladder and log stuff today, and I tried to make the first turn and bam, slipped off. I made that thing way to tight. Fortuantely the second two, including the bermed third one work great.
But one of you guys should have been my constructive critics and told me "Never build unless you have a bike to measure with." Any just sharing one of the many mistakes that are made out on the hill.
See you all some time.

That sounds like the inside line of the pump track out at Rays MTB in Cleveland (which reminds me: we should get a central PA contingent to head out there this winter...that place is sweet. Sorry, OT, we'll talk about that another time). Anyway, the inside line of the pump track there has one super-tight radiused turn that almost sent me flying over top of the wooden berm. And I ride like a damn turtle. So, don't feel bad, even the "pro" builders mess up their turn radii.
