Gaspin' in the Aspen - MTBR Gathering in Northern NM - October 13-15
With less than two weeks remaining before GITA, it is time to clear your schedule, tell the boss that you're going to be 'cough cough' sick on Friday the 13th 'cough cough', break out the armwarmers, and fill your cooler with beer.
For more information, GITA 2006
sound off here if you're planning on coming, you know, for the logistics stuff...
hey, let me know if you're planning on staying at Camp May.. Nice views, fresh, crisp air, the place to be for after-ride food and brews...
We're planning on supplying a few grills and enough firewood to stay warm under the pavilion, everyone will just ahev to rpovide their own food. Smith's in town is the closest grocery store...

Thanks, the link is great and informative! I'll be there for Sat & Sun rides. Wish I was fortunate enough to do Fri too, but honestly would end up bonking on the South Boundary if I tried that! Can't wait.

I will be there for the South Boundary ride on Sunday. Been thinking about this ride since our last ride up there. Can't wait. I would like to do some Los Alamos as well. Don't know if i can get a pass for 2 days or not. I will try though.

I'm planning on driving down and joining y'all. The far better news is that I'll be bringing Cynthia (aka BRG) and Sasha with me.
So here are three Coloradans that need to be told where to show up and at what time. We have no camping/hotelling/crashing plans at this time, and don't even know what town(s) we should be aiming at...I am not sure, but I think that the girls are OK camping, but I might need an outlet for my curlers.
We plan on heading down Thursday night (I think), and we'll be riding Friday, Saturday, and SBT on Sunday and continuing north after that ride.
This will be my last hurrah before shoulder surgery on the following Tuesday, which will keep me from MTBing for a long while... So I expect y'all to tucker me out!
PS - I am willing to trade significant quantities of Tommyknocker and Java Porter for a few showers and a ristra or two!

sweet on ya for bringing company!!
dude, my shower is less thatn 20 minutes from camp may, where all the festivities will be taking place, so consider it available, and I'll score you two ristras before you roll in.
Let me know what your plans end up being, hotel vs camping. At the very minimum, you can give me a call about when you want to get in and I'll hook you up with directions (I'll just meet you somewhere Thursday, if that's when) to a good place to crash
we will definitely give you the opportunity to tucker your a$$ out, how long do you expect to be convalescing? A few years back I had surgery the first week of November, and couldn't ride until March. It drove me crazy....

I'll make the drive up for the Saturday ride, prolly stick around for a while afterwards to have a taste of that Java Porter RWT is bringing - I hope he brings a lot!
I may be in for SBT on Sunday if enough shuttle vehicles are available, and if it doesn't snow before then!

Pretty sure the missus & me are in for Friday. Saturday is up in the air. Probably will be just me for SBT, although that could change depending upon when the mom-in-law departs for Tucson. I'll plan to bring a load of firewood up Thursday PM the 12th, unless you think other parties might use it up before we take over the pavillion.

Hey nu mex dudes
I don't know which one of you is which by your screen names, but I met some of you at the colorado ride a few weeks ago. Good times BTW! How long does it take to get down to that camp may place from where we were camped? I'm really going to try to get down to this if I can get another body to go with.
I'm Mateo, the one with the green Spot.

Figure close to 4 hours, but you can do it in less than 3 1/2 if you're really workin' it.

Closer than I care to be to a Sportsman Orgasm...
Ummm...a growler of Mountain Sun Java Porter is $10, if memory serves..., but a keg is only $55...I could bring down a keg if there were enough consumers and if somebody brought a trashcan and some ice to keep it cold for Thur, Fri and Sat nights...
Would the JP drinkers please raise their hands?
Jeez, I went to high school in NM and it seems just like old times! (Only this time it would be legal!)

I'll kick in for a keg, and for the trashcan and the ice. I just don't want it all to be consumed on friday night, because I ahev another commitment Friday night and won't be able to stay up there.

oh yeah, one more thing. I'm all about trying different bikes...I'm bringing a 29" WaltWorks hardtail that I love but that I may be willing to swap for an equally interesting bike for portions or maybe all of some rides, so anybody who's interested in trying it out bring me something to play on as well....I'm 6'2" tall...
By the way I've been on a 29er all summer and I'm a total convert...

well I've made it to the vally of the sun and started work, but I don;t think I'll be able to make it up and over to GITA. As Much as I want to see and ride with you all, the fast move took too much out of me. and the thought of getting back in a car is not appealing.
so have a blast and post lots of pictures and stories.

I'd take a keg of beer over an SS any day.

OK, I'm up for some of it. I've freed up some time on Friday and I'll get off the big bike for a bit. Also I could also use alittle extra exercise so I should do a ride or two with you guys. I'm coming for the Friday afternoon Pajarito ride and I may also make the Saturday ride. Are you starting from the lodge or Camp May? Neal and I are doing some extra riding after we get down. We can show everyone some of the newer log ride sections (real fun section near the Aspen lift that we just finished up). I can also lead anyone down some of the better freeride trails for the decsent since some are reasonable for good bike handlers (the new Half Aspen trail out in the west meadow is a great downhill for anyone) . Let me know what the meeting plan is and are you guys hanging and beer drinking at Camp May later?

brg, taking one for the team.... Thanks! Your sacrifice is appreciated at this end. FWIW, Sportsman overstates the SS-ness of our local trails, as he often forgets what it's like to live with only two lungs. For the rides he's got planned, you'll probably be glad you have gears.

I would agree. I would much rather do these 3 days w/ gears than w/o. I'm sure somebody will make it look easy, though

I’m shooting for Sat and Sun. I can bring some firewood if needed and will kick in $ for beer. The only question that remains is how many gears to bring.

tom sucks!!! he just don't understand, but we sure do love the beer...
The rides are great, with or without gears. Maybe Joe's right and you'll be happier with your forced choice (although he spent most of the summer riding a ss up here)
besides, you front ranging ssers have it made the following weekend...Intergalactic Championships on Saturday, BeanSS on Sunday...

I'll probably be driving down from the front range via Family Power, but I'm looking for a scoot back up after Sunday's ride.
You will be kicking me to curb somewhere in the northern portion of Colorado Springs. I'll pitch in for gas of course.

I am in Colorado Springs & just saw this GITA post, and I am definitely interested in going.
I would be arriving Friday night, riding Sat and Sun.
Loudpawlz, I have a truck for two, let me know if you are interested. Otherwise, I will start poking around to find someone who wants to go.

Scott,
I think I got the official thumbs up from the wife. I’ll be up there around noon on Friday and stay for all three days. I’ll be camping in a white caravan. With all the seats removed it makes for a nice bead.

LOL - You'll survive. SSportsman kills it on the SS, and Los Alamos is mighty steep for 1 gear. Unless its a 1:1. Um, yeah! Can ya go that low?
The real question is - are there any pool tables in Los Alamos...?

Albuquerque riders
hey, are any of you albuquerque guys/gals coming up to ride this weekend? you have been mighty quiet...
A guy that lives in Rio Rancho just e-mailed me and he's looking for a carpool to GITA. He probably lurks here (how else would he know, my blog isn't that popular), so maybe some mtbr style intros would get the ball rolling....

I'm planning on going up there for Saturday and maybe Sunday. The idea of camping and freezing my butt off at 9k doesn't excite me though. LA is an easy drive so it'll be a commuter trip for me, unless you see start seeing some lows ABOVE 40 degrees...I'm assuming I'll be full for both trips, as my turtle can just about fit two people and bikes.

rcc you really need to try to make Saturday's ride. It is that good, you'll suffer a little in the first hour (nothing that a conversational pace and a few regroups won't take care of though), but once we hit Guaje Ridge, it'll be 1.5 hours of technical bliss.
Sunday morning, we're meeting at the Bean Coffee shop in Taos at 9:30. It's the southern location, a little plaza on the right a block north of the turn off to Angel Fire, same plaza as Native Sons.
I suspect that we're going to ride through a little snow on Sunday
