Actually, it looks like they moved the down tube junction up for suspension fork clearance, then added the gusset for strength.

Sparkle or no?
Some of the latest Surly colors have had a really nice appearance in the flesh with that nice metallic powder coat. This picture makes it look like the earlier powder coat jobs. Which will it be?
Maybe it doesn't matter. I still like my Campstove green one better!

Holy crap, I had better rush out and get my hands on a brown one now. I always thought blue was a universally appealing color. I was wrong. That blue is superb on the Salsa El Mariachi. It's not working on the Karate Monkey, I'm afraid.

Maybe I'm overthinking this... but with the headtube extending downwards more than the previous iteration of the KM, would Surly have redesigned the fork for a shorter axle-to-crown height to maintain similar geometry?

I'd guess no. I'd wager that they kept the head tube in its same position in space, but shifted the downtube slightly upwards then strengthened that area with the gussett. This gives more breathing room for wide-stanced fork crowns.

The HT is likely the same length, but the downtube junction with the HT has been moved upward then the gusset added to allow for better clearance. Axle to Crown should remain the same.
Edit, or ditto.

The new color is:
Just smurfy! Depending on your opinion, interpret that any way you want, as the smurfs used smurfy for just about everything.
I like it.

Le jour de gloire est arrivé!
Contre nous de la tyrannie
L'étendard sanglant est levé (bis) [1]
Entendez-vous dans les campagnes
Mugir ces feroces soldats?
Ils viennent jusque dans vos bras
Égorger vos fils, vos compagnes!
Aux armes, citoyens!
Formez vos bataillons!
Marchons, marchons!
Qu'un sang impur
Abreuve nos sillons!
Que veut cette horde d'esclaves,
De traîtres, de rois conjurés?
Pour qui ces ignobles entraves
Ces fers dès longtemps préparés? (bis)
Français, pour nous, ah! Quel outrage,
Quels transports il doit exciter!
C'est nous qu'on ose méditer
De rendre à l'antique esclavage!
Aux armes, citoyens...
Quoi! Des cohortes étrangères!
Feraient la loi dans nos foyers!
Quoi! Ces phalanges mercenaires
Terrasseraient nos fiers guerriers! (bis)
Grand Dieu! Par des mains enchaînées
Nos fronts sous le joug se ploieraient
De vils despotes deviendraient
Les maîtres de nos destinées!
Aux armes, citoyens...
Tremblez, tyrans et vous perfides
L'opprobre de tous les partis
Tremblez! Vos projets parricides
Vont enfin recevoir leurs prix! (bis)
Tout est soldat pour vous combattre
S'ils tombent, nos jeunes héros,
La terre en produit de nouveaux,
Contre vous tout prêts à se battre!
Aux armes, citoyens...
Français, en guerriers magnanimes,
Portez ou retenez vos coups!
Épargnez ces tristes victimes
À regret s'armant contre nous (bis)
Mais ces despotes sanguinaires
Mais ces complices de Bouillé
Tous ces tigres qui, sans pitié,
Déchirent le sein de leur mère!
Aux armes, citoyens... .
Amour sacré de la Patrie,
Conduis, soutiens nos bras vengeurs
Liberté, Liberté chérie,
Combats avec tes défenseurs! (bis)
Sous nos drapeaux que la victoire
Accoure à tes mâles accents,
Que tes ennemis expirants
Voient ton triomphe et notre gloire!
Aux armes, citoyens...
(Couplet des enfants)
Nous entrerons dans la carrière [2]
Quand nos aînés n'y seront plus
Nous y trouverons leur poussière
Et la trace de leurs vertus (bis)
Bien moins jaloux de leur survivre
Que de partager leur cercueil,
Nous aurons le sublime orgueil
De les venger ou de les suivre!
Aux armes, citoyens...

Still like my KM's Camp Stove Green the best. Especially with a new British Racing Green Brooks saddle on it! Now if only I could find matching handlebar tape.

Why can't Surly get rid of that ugly bent sea tube. I know its suppose to reduce the chain stay length but it really looks crap and ruins the lines of what could be a classic design.

I'm glad surly is keeping the good looking bent seat tube. It reduces the chain stay length, and looks really nice, it's destined to be a classic design.

The bent seat tube is what sets the KM apart from all the other look alikes. It achieves many things including the fact that it allows full fenders to fit perfectly.

Then it would not be a Karate Monkey. If anything, I wish they would have gone to a replaceable dropout that allowed vertically loading the wheel. Either that or moving the disc brake mounts between the seat and chain stay to allow removing the wheel with disc brakes when they are adjusted properly.
Some type of "curve around" asymmetric seat stay could probably do the job with a brace. This would allow the disc brake to be mounted horizontally and all problems would be solved.

I think you're getting out-voted, Scott. I, too, like the cool bent seat tube. Not only is it a nice feature, it looks cool as well. What would really be nice is if they would drop the top tube like the Soma Juice,

Another vote in favor of the bent seat tube. Admittedly it does limit seatpost room (I had to trim my 1G Thudbuster to make it fit), but it is the visual hallmark of the KM, distinguishing it from other bikes at a distance. No way will Surly throw that out after 3 1/2 years of production.
I still think something needs to be done about the disc mounts on this bike, and I'd love to hear if they've addressed it for '07. Most configurations require unscrewing one or both of the caliper bolts to remove the rear wheel. Replacing the fork ends with sliders, EBB or replaceable dropouts would make this a different bike and be contrary to the Surly way -- but sur(e)ly it would be easy to alter the disc mounts to allow easy wheel removal.

I don't mind the bent seat tube either.
However, the new gusset is a poke in the eye. Knowing that it is there to accomodate (poorly designed) suspension forks just makes it worse. Having that extra bead of weld hanging out there is probably not going to help things either, aesthetically.
I always thought that the KM lended itself nicely to classy, retro styling. Between that color and that gusset, I guess those days are over. Granted, that look isn't for everyone. . .

First of all the bent seat tube is what makes the monkey one of the sweetest riding 29'ers on the market.
Second, everyone just stop *****ing about the horizontal rear drop. Big freakin deal you have to loosen two bolts to change a rear flat. The horizontal drop is what gives the monkey its swiss army versatility. How sweet it is to switch between gears and singlespeed without having to use a singleator. Eccentric B.B., just stop!
Third, holy **** is that blue. Did they get some left over Cannondale paint or something? I am glad I have the skidmark brown.

I wouldn't change a thing on my KM frame. Sure, if altering the disc mounts can make wheel changes easier, do it. The geometry is perfect, raising the BB is a bad idea, IMO. I run SS and rigid, canti brakes, so for me the bike is sweet.

I like the new KM. Dig the cool html blue.
The bent seat tube can be a potential issue for those who like to drop their saddles. The smaller frames 16 & 18 don't have much room for lower the post. But as someone else mentioned, the bend is one of the key to the KM's sweet ride, so I'll take the bend
