Fall Gathering - The Info Thread

OKEY DOKE.

Here's the info -

September 29 - October 1
North and South White Pines Group Camps, Pisgah National Forest

Directions:
From intersection of US64 and US276 in Brevard NC - Go west on
US276 into the national forest. Proceed about 2 miles or so, and
turn right at the sign pointing to the horse stables. North and South
White Pines will be about 1/4 mile down the road on your right.
Each camp has a small parking area, and the North camp area is
a couple hundred yards farther up the road from the South.

There is no gate or lock. Show up whenever you like on Friday.

You will not be able to drive right up to your campsite. No RV's or
trailers or what-not. You'll need to walk a couple hundred feet to
get from the car to the site. Anyone bringing a keg will receive
personal assistance with unpacking from The Management.

But at least you don't have to drive through A Deadly Creek Of Death
this year.

Parking is limited. PLEASE carpool to whatever degree is practical.

We are theoreticaly limited to 25 people per camp, for a total of 50.
I'm not going to count and I'm not going to worry about it. The ranger
may or may not decide to worry about it. Whatever. I'm a lot more
relaxed about things this year.

One semi-rule I'd like to throw out. The North Camp is hereby
designated The Obnoxious Camp. The Obnoxious Camp is for loud
drunk people who stay up all night and have psychotic dogs, etc.
The South Camp is for people who want a full nights peaceful sleep,
have children, etc. There's a wide flat trail between the two, so
co-mingling is easy.... but if Beefcake and Dickey decide to stay up
all night listening to Poison and beating on trees like they did last
year, at least you'll have an option.

For those who want sophistication, Davidson River Campground is
only about a 10 minute ride away. They have all the comforts of home
there.... assuming that a feature of your home is an ex-Gestapo old
man who follows you around and makes sure you're not "in violation".
It's amazing what some people will put up with for a hot shower.

Speaking of "violations". There is frequently a police checkpoint set
up at the intersection of US276 and the Horse Stables road. PLEASE
DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE. I'm super cereal - Ask the PMBAR folks
about this one. Now drinking and riding..... That's a different story.
Just have a light on.

OK. That's all the boring lame stuff. With two gatherings under our
belts, ya'll know the drill for the fun stuff.

Post up if you've got any questions, and see ya'll soon.

Dang horses - got to ruin it for everyone else.

Seriously, there's nothing you'll need to drive out for that's worth the risk. Be safe. Bring it with you. Take a blankie - even if you're just planning to visit.

I'm planning on going. I live in south Asheville / Fletcher and have a minivan and could carpool with some others. The parking areas at the campsite are tiny. If people don't car pool we could end up with cars all down the side of the road. Do you think the rangers would have a problem with that? Could attract some unwanted attention.

We could also work out some way for people to park at the ranger station. I guess people could drop off their stuff at the campground, park at the ranger station then ride their bike over to the campground. They wouldn't tow your car from the ranger station if you left it over night. Would they?

Yeeeeeeeeeeee Haaaaaaawwwwwwwww,

Are there many people that will be doing the Tabacco Free ride in Dupont on Saturday or are most people just riding?

I will be riding in the TFR. . . on Saturday and looking for some Pisgah craziness on Sunday.

All true. Anyone who would be willing to park at the Ranger Station and ride back
to camp gets a free Natty Light and my everlasting gratitude. Anyone willing to park
along side the road is nuts and should probably have their head examined. The locals
consider drifting their pickups through the turns at 60 mph to be good sport.

Please pack in as tight as possible. If you're that guy who needs to park his car at a
45 degree angle across two spots because it's so *****in', please do us all a favor and
stay home.

I am planning on doing the Tabacco Free ride in Dupont on Saturday.

Sunday I am looking for a group to go exploring Pisgah. Do a traditional epic from the stables to Trace or whatever. It's all gooooood.

I am not sure if I can make it. I've got a lot going on involving adoption stuff and the "Worlds" are the next week, but boy it sounds like I had a good time last year....

It's pretty difficult to put together a huge group ride since what everybody wants
to do is so varied... and the best laid plans generally come to naught - so I'm not planning
anything in particular. Generally, everybody just groups up with others with similar states
of fitness, sobriety, ambition, sanity, etc. and plays it by ear. Also, the FS frowns upon
ginormous groups of riders, so keeping the group size down is A Good Thing.

Anybody who is not familiar with the trails and/or wants to join a group should just holla'
while we're BS'ing around the fire. Everyone should be able to find a group that suits
them. Just be sure to shout it out that you're looking to ride with others and it'll happen.

Tell you what.... If you qualify*, I'll let you come to the gathering for HALF the price of the
entry at Worlds, AND I won't charge you for any prizes that you might win! How great is
that?!?!

"Bob, tell him what else he's won!"

With your participation in this Fall's gathering, you'll also receive......

A FREE HANGOVER ! ** That's right! You'll wake up in the morning with the ultimate
in sensual...... um, sensations. Can't you just feel the throbbing head? Taste the bile?
Anticipate the groovy dizziness? What's more fun than vomiting on your handlebars
while sweating profusely two hunded feet into a 30 mile ride?

But that's not all. This year only*** you'll also receive a FREE HAND MASSAGE. You
heard right ! Harley R. Doggerson will be on hand to tenderly chew the stress away from
any appendage**** that you happen to dangle in front of her! Can't you just feel the
stress washing away along with the rivulet of blood that gently drips down your fingers?

Did I mention the free food? Once again we will be handing out THE BIG WAD OF
BREAD AND THE CHUNK OF CHEESE THAT EVERYBODY RUBBED THEIR HANDS
ALL OVER ! Wow ! There will also be Cheezits if you want to get your sh*t-smelling
breath on.

I'm seriously, you guys. How can you top that?

* See qualifying procedure. Must have participated in a previous Gathering in a year
that is a prime number -OR- Must have participated in two consecutive gatherings with
a combined participation of at least 100 people, with neither event having a participation
of less than 20 -OR- Must have consumed at least 13 beers in 4 hour period within the
last 4 months -AND- ridden no less than a) 30 miles offroad or b) 70 miles onroad within
12 hours of aforementioned drinking -OR- kiss my butt in public -OR- give me a whole
bunch of money. Other rules and restrictions apply.
** 12-pack not included
*** Other years not included
**** Don't even go there
sh*t That's a censored part of the text, not a footnote. Duh. I mean, what the hell are they
teaching in school these days? Surely you could have figured it out from context. IT'S
NOT A FOOTNOTE. Stop reading this immediately.

You just told the www that you taught your dog a blood-letting acupunture treatment.

I can't wait! Fortunately I've not taught my dogger any such acupuncture tricks so she might be well liked! Just bring some extra fig newtons and beef jerky and you'll have a friend for life -- she LOVES that stuff!

I'll be joining the TFL ride on Saturday like extrmtao and will be up for a good ride to Farlow or Trace Ridge on Sunday.

If anyone from ATL is heading up, drop me a line and we can carpool up there.

Too bad I won't be there to let folks know if/when their breath is in fact sh*t smelling. For clarification, it was some fancy type of cheezit...tabasco er something. Anyway, I won't be there...I'll be in California that weekend which makes sense b/c apparently that's where I live now.

Y'all have fun now...and know that if I was gonna be there, I'd be on the rowdy campsite side.

go north young man

Forshizzle. Me and my pals, the cheeze its, will probably be in the ATL with a super friend (not aquaman) at his bachealor party, that is unless i can convince about 9-15 people i don't know to take up MTN biking, debauchary, general uncleanliness and binge drinking in the woods. some people didn't plan their wedding festivities around MY plans properly. My time in the North camp will come soon enough. I will miss all of you, while i am warm, drunk and watching odd shaped things bounce in ways i thought they couldn't. Have fun and remember to walk AWAY from the banjos.

there will be a few of us that'll be up there Thursday afternoon / evening... we're staying at Davidson River CG (just Thursday) some are staying.... anyways the plan for us ....Thrift Cove / Black Mountain...Thursday eve ride..... Friday will be either Hatchery area or maybe a roadtrip to BC to do Greenslick for some good air. Saturday a bunch of our group are headed to Dupont for the TFL Ride....

for the ones of us not doing TFL Saturday i'm thinkin about a Squirrel Gap ride

Sunday are headed up the Road for a Black Mountain Trail lovefest may throw something else in the mix. depends on when everyone wants to hit the road.

I'm sure there will be other groups doing other rides, that's the great thing about the Gatherings everybody just does their own thing, then hang out in the eve and drink heavily

you're more than welcome to ride with us...

I'll probably be getting there around 4:30 or so. Will probably ride up the gravel to
Pressley Gap and drop Black Mountain. It's a short ride, but lots 'o fun.

Thanks for the info guys. I am a intermediate rider and will be riding with my dad who is a beginner-intermediate rider. I have rode bent creek once ( Green's lick was awesome!) but otherwise have not ridden in pisgah. Will we be able to hang?

joining us on the Saturday ride, you guys shouldn't have a problem....not too technical (it is in spots) but it is a long ride. 25+ miles. the sunday ride i would suggest riding with a another group, Black Mountain is a pretty strenuous ride and technical Downhill (like i said there will be plenty of other people at the Gathering riding a bunch of different trails...everybody is pretty cool, and relaxed, so just ask around.

if you've never hit Pisgah before, some recommendations would be Caney Bottom for sure (over at the Fish Hatchery), another good one is Thrift Cove / Lwr Black mountain, accross from the Davidson River CG.... then the North Mills area Fletcher Creek, Trace Ridge

Have you looked into the (TFL)Tobacco Free for Life ride? Saturday over at Dupont...great ride! they have an advanced and intermediate ride... and it's a great way to experince Dupont... plenty of aid/food stations and bailout points if you need it..last year they had over 250 riders and it was a blast. pre register and save some money, you can also save some coin by not getting the jersey....they do it up right, with a nice box lunch at the end as well. and like mentioned earlier there are a bunch from the gathering headed that way saturday so you could tag along.

Watch out, some of these guys are like superheroes on bikes and the trails around the gathering are some of the toughest in Pisgah. Way way tougher than anything in Bent Creek. But there should be something for everyone. A wide range of riding abilities and many different group rides throughout the weekend. Just don't get suckered into an epic. An stay away from the ORAMM / Double Dare crowd.

I'm working friday till 5:00. Then I gots to go home and pack. So I'm hopping to get in friday night before sundown. Did sombody say squirrel gap on saturday?

Thanks guys. Although I am not an extremely skilled rider I am not afraid to walk/ride some technical stuff (I thought Bent creek was not very technical at all). Are most of the guys at the gathering epic crosscrountry types who like to hammer or just like having fun riding some tech stuff and getting air? Where there many begginner-intermediate riders at the april gathering? Sorry about all the questions.

Change o' plans for me....my GF is coming with and her being a rock climber she wants to go climb something while we're there. I told her we'd go hike / climb on Saturday then she's on her own for Sunday whilst I ride. I'd be game for the Black Mtn loop, but may be more game for something over near Fish Hatchery - I still gots to see Farlow Gap!

If anyone has ideas for good bouldering in either Pisgah or Dupont, please let me know. I'm going to check on a southeastern climbing forum for info as well. I'm sure there's some good stuff to play around on.

Oh, and we'll be there Friday night.

the Gathering is all types of riders, racers, bigAir, bighair, Fat, old, young, fast and slow. Newbees and seasoned. some like myself fit in several catagories (none of 'em good) don't sweat it, come out and have a good time.

My non-biking g/f will be with me as well. She will be looking for hikes and taking pictures at the TFL on Saturday. There is rock climbing on Looking Glass and another place halfway to looking glass. Ropes and stuff. I dont' know anything about that stuff.

there's a little spot off of 276 just above Looking Glass Falls, before you get to Sliding Rock, on the right, it's like a little Quarry off the side of the road. always see peeps climbing there.

Thanks J and Brado!! I was thinking of taking her to Dupont and hiking back to Bridal Veil Falls and stuff. Maybe we do that in the a.m. then hit this place near Looking Glass....good info!

See, mtn bikers know all Others only thinks they do

I may be coming up later on Saturday. I'll bring my Poison CD.
I hope to be up there in time to get a quick Clawhammer/Avery Creek in before I break into the beers.

You going to have any tag-alongs? I should have enough energy after the TFL to get an Avery ride in.

If we pull it off it will be a military style operation. We will come running full dressed out of the back of the Element and hit the trail. Everyone in, everyone out, no one gets hurt.

Whoa, sounds very serious

You will probably be pushing some sort of crazy road gear up that hill I bet. Maybe I will just take a leisurely stroll up Clawhammer and wait at the top

Wild wild card rider included?

I moved to Asheville about six months ago and think your gathering sounds like alot of fun. Is anyone welcome?

I try not to let my flex hours day job distract me from riding in the woods. I ride four or five days a week for at least two hours a day, mostly Bent Creek for convenience and conditioning, and around Brevard, also Tsali when I can. I'd like to make some new Mtn biking friends and check out a few tech skills watching the more skilled (or at least the lucky and more daring).

Reading about your gathering reminded me of many gatherings with friends where I know we had one hell of a great time together doing something that involved alot of exercise, varying legths and types of recovery time and for some reason, some of the details of exactly what we did are a little fuzzy.

From what you describe, you're meeting somewhere near the washed out bridge at the base of Daniel Ridge trail?

Clawhammer can't be shuttled (except by horse).

Clawhammer can not be stopped.
It can not be reasoned with.

We are heading straight to the campsite (the one near the horse stables), and leaving right from there by bike.

Am I wrong in thinking that you can drive up to FS 1206 and have a happy descent down Black Mountain from there? I tried that one day but a yellow jacket put a damper on it before I got there.

Unnnnhh..... once you get on 1206 you'll have to climb up to the top of Clawhammer Rd on South Mills River Trail (I think) AND THEN still have to climb up Black Mtn before the descending starts.
BTW, I am no Pisgah expert.

No way to drive to the top of clawhammer 'buckthorn gap'. No way to drive to the top of avery creek trail 'club gap'.

The climb up the backside of clawhammer from south mills river trail on buckthorn gap trail is much easier than clawhammer.

Climbing Club gap trail is much shorter and puts you right at the top of Avery creek trail. But climbing club gap is super steep and rocky. Slow go and much hike-a-bike but only a few miles. I'm sure somebody could clean it just not me.

Clawhammer is smooth road like all the way to the top. You could grind it out on a DH bike. It would just take some time and energy. Avery is a very challenging downhill. Especialy the steep and rocky top sections. Could be worth your effort.

Clawhammer is an act of cleansing that all should partake. My first ride in pisgah was clawhammer --> black --> avery. I was so dissoriented after the ride that I hit my head on my hatchback 6 times when I got back to the car. Ahhhhhhhhh I miss those days of riding 7 miles and not being able to walk the next day.

You can do the club gap route if you want to "ssssss ssss ssshhh ssshhhhh shhhhudddd" drive up to the top but there is still some climbing to be done at that point.

Coordination is overrated. We don't have any volunteers. They are not planning on not
bringing nothing. I reckon' we'll figger it out.

There's a convenience store about 100 yards south of the main intersection at the Pisgah
entrance, and they sell split hardwood for $0.25 a stick. As entertaining as it was
watching you flail away at that tree-stump, I think we'd be well served by purchasing our
fuel. Support the local economy and what not.

Maybe Friday evening we can take up a collection, comandeer somebody's pickup, and
make a run.

I'll bring a 50 pound bag of salt so we can get it all brined.

Jack, I am not the organizer by any means but anybody is welcome. A vagrant could probably sit down by the fire and fit in nicely without anyone noticing

I came this past spring to my first gathering and knew no one. Now I know people my momma warned me about.

Bring your bike and be prepared to ride.

Hey BrouSSard

Hey guys...

I was definately planning on making the "gathering" again this time until I found out that was my girlfriends birthday. I'm still planning on stealthing it in for a beer or 12 one of those nights... Maybe even try to make room for my bike in between all the beers so I can squeeze in a ride!
Sorry to hear you've resorted to stealin quarters from the campers like a bully in the cafeteria for wood. Maybe I can bring you some for free if you promise not to beat me up at recess...
If I do make it down, I'll be easy to spot. I'll be the 'extremely' sober guy... possibly wandering around the "obnoxious" half of the campground... with plenty of milk bones to keep that vicious ***** of a dog of yours from nippin at my heels...

As fer co-ordination, I have a truck that we can go secure some fuel with. There's always Wally World at the same intersection, they may have farwood as well.

Ah, Clawhammer...that was my first Pisgah ride as well. Had just been riding in New England for 6 months and thought I was a good climber....until that day.....

Fired up and unencumbered

Last gathering, much of my time was spent alternating between chasing after my friendly, but large, obnoxious and sometimes intimidating dog Bear, and my small, sweet and sometimes insane from exhaustion 3 year old son.

I got in some riding, but couldn't really focus on my drinking due to these "distractions". This year, I'm taking Owen to his grandparents Friday, dropping Bear off at the glue factory, and plan to apply myself for the remainder of the weekend. My wife Elizabeth is coming too, and really excited that I'm feeling so ambitious.

Oh, and I have a new bike I'm excited to figure out.

Relax Dickey, I'll still bring the rigid singlespeed 29er fringe bike with goofy bars so I can look cool and hurt myself. They are complimentary machines.

So I'm kind of torn...

Are there gonna be any big bike guys this weekend? I don't want to be the one who slows everyone down. Also, is everyone leaving to go to Dupont on Saturday b/c I would like to hit up some of the Pisgah trails (Black Mtn, etc) that I never have before. Regardless, should be a great party if I can actually make it.

From what I know of these types of non-events:

A lot of different (sized) people.
A lot of riding abilities.
A lot of those silly SS bikes.
A lot of braggarts Saturday at 2 a.m.
A lot of excuses Saturday at 8 a.m.
A lot of hikers making plans at 11 a.m.
A lot of belching.
A lot of camp fire smoke.
A lot of laughing.
A lot of fun.

Uh - what was the question?

Woo-Hoo! Countin' down the hours before I'll be in Pisgaaaaaaahh! I'm sure those who are already onsite are getting the place all nice and cozy and the sheets will be turned down with roses on our pillows when we arrive.

YEA RIGHT! That wouldn't be a bad idea, however....get someone to go to your races and camping areas the day before you to set everything then all you have to do is show up and enjoy!

oh well, in the meantime, I'll just keep sitting in the office twiddlin' away until noon....

Oh and Drkenan~ If by "big bike guys" you mean 29ers, there will be plenty of 'em to drool over. But remember, we can't discriminate against the little wheel folks just because ours are bigger

My GF doesn't get off work until 2:00 so we're not planning to leave until 3:00. So to answer your question, I won't make a 3pm ride. I would like to make some sort of ride tonight, but I make no promises about arrival times when I have to fight I-85 north from Atlanta on a Friday -- even at 3:00! It can take 3 hours to Pisgah or it can take me 5. All depends on how stupid folks get.

All you outta town folks be prepared for some cold. Low last night was 45. Tonights gonna be arround 43. It not that bad just be prepared. Certianly won't be as bad as last year when it was below freezing every night.

Looks like my gathering experience has been derailed. My babysitting has fallen through. I'm still coming but I probably won't be out there until Saturday afternoon. Probably get a ride in late that afternoon. Drink and howl at the moon saturday night then limp home Sunday morning to get drunk and sit on the couch, watch football and have kids climb all over me.

Howdy folks. Haven't been on in a while, some of you might have some strange recollection of me from the gathering last fall at kuykendall.

Shame to say I'm not presently in the area, and will miss this one. Drink a beer or ten for me. I'm hoping I can find a job out in that neck of the woods so I can go back there.
