Best Norba National result ever for a 29er?

Not counting the STXC win a few years ago on a road bike at Sonoma, Waltworks team rider (and my next door neighbor) Nick Stevens had a pretty decent race at the Sugar Mountain Norba national race this past weekend:
-In the XC, Nick finished 41st in a tough ~85 rider field despite breaking his seatpost off and having to ride the final lap with no saddle.
-In the short track, Nick was 24th in a ~70 rider field. He's hoping to crack the top 20 this weekend at Mt. Snow as he'll get a much better callup for the next round.

I believe this is the best short track finish ever in a national for a 29er.

You can read Nick's writeup here:
http://web.mac.com/nowork/iWeb/Bould...20Reports.html

Note the lack of a saddle (if you look carefully) in the picture of Nick running a descent. Doh!

Man, you live in a good neighbourhood!

Do Norba National racers actually travel between coasts all season? I thought OUR national series has me travelling a lot...

Very cool that people ride custom builder's steel bikes at that level. I'm pretty sure that there's zero Elite riders over here that ride steel.

Yep...

We're in a townhome/condo complex with a ton of youngish/outdoorsy folks. It's really nice, and a great community - everyone knows each other and we all hang out and go riding/skiing/etc. Very different than other places I've lived in my life where I didn't even know the names of my neighbors.

Last year, I was dropping Nick like a bad habit on the descents on his Giant NRS. Now he's on big wheels and I can't get rid of him anymore. I should never have built him a bike!

Clox - outside of the top 30 or so riders, most people don't travel all over to race in the US. There just isn't enough money in it to justify the travel costs. But a lot of folks from around here are out east to do the Sugar Mountain/Mt Snow/Mt St. Anne triple - they're all within relatively easy driving distance of each other (by US standards) and it saves some airfare.

Most of the national series races are at ski areas which usually have "mountain" in their name.

Most US riders probably travel further for their "local" races than you do for your national events.

And the record gets broken...

Nick was 23rd in the STXC at Mount Snow on his 29er. Read his race report here, if you're bored at work:

JHK 2nd at Deer Valley STXC on 29er?

I heard that JHK finished second to Kabush on his 29er. Anybody have any news on this?

Dave Weins won a NORBA Nat on a Diamond Back Override Comp back in like 1991. Running 700x45 Panaracer Smokes. Yes that was over a decade ago and in the last century and millenium as well.

And now 2006 the Fisher team are raving about the 1.8" Bontrager XR's...
What were people thinking to ditch that rough diamond that just needed bigger rubber to be suitable for everyman?

And the number 16 Expert woman in the national XC rankings is Shontell Gauthier on her Willits. Way to go Shontell!
