07 Fisher X-Caliber

07Xcal.jpg
A couple of these have made thier way into my hands.
No real difference between the spec of the 06 and 07.
clearance.jpg
I really like the new color though, a nice sparkely (sp?) silver.

If anyone wants to see some different shots, let me know.
I have a Paragon to build next

Same frame?

The frame appears to be unchanged from the 2006. Does anyone know if they beefeed up/redesigned the seattube where it has been breaking?

Best looking frame color in a while IMHO.

Too bad they didn't correct the frame.

The question is, what size tire are they specing on the rear. If it's a 2.3 then they have improved the tire clearance.

Tires are the good ole Bontrager Jones XR, front and rear. They are listed as a 2.2 (55/53)
For funsies, I'll try and stuff my Exis on Delgados in the Paragon I'm building right now and post a shot

Yep. That, and the Force, of course....I have fore-seen it...You don't KNOOOOW the POOOWER Of the DAAAARK SIIIIDE...

I'll try to put together a ride report later today if I get around to it. I've always been a pretty good creative writer. I'm thinking the gist will be "good tire clearance, standover clearance, firm and predictable ride quality, a bit heavy for a Alum hardtail, and some concerns about frame breakage, but otherwise a thumbs-up!!"

.

I talked to a GF engineer in April who assured me the seat tubes are fixed.

disappointed

No added clearance, no seat tube gusset, and IMO bland color - I'm disappointed... But the more I think about it the more I want a steel frame, so I'm curious if they're rolling out a ferrous 29er.

Thanks for the pics and info!

i prefer...

the orange of '06 to the silver. just got my x-cal last week and every weld and chainstays look identical to '07. so far i'm enjoying 29er experience and bike does fit my 6'3" like a glove. do have to get used to the size though, as techie singletrack was an issue on yesterdays ride. on downhills, turns, and straights this thing flies!!

Yeah, they probably did a ceremonial dance and sprinkled some tube-B-strong on it. I'm not convinced. I want to see a nice hydroformed frame, designed from the ground up based on what they've learned not to do. I'm glad I'm not torn between buying it for looks and not buying it for fear of breakage... I can't stand the new colors either. I really wanted to like it, and I'm disappointed.

On a sort-of related topic, if one were to buy one of these frames, would there be any way to change the color without voiding the warranty? Can "Gary Fisher" be persuaded to do custom colors like Trek's Project One thing? Would an independent painter painting it probably lead Gary Fisher to not replace the frame if the seattube snaps sometime later?

Each bike company handles repainting differently interms of whether it voids the warranty or not.

Santa Cruz requires that you send the frame to them to have repainted, if someone else does it then the warranty is void.

On-One is very generous and lets the owner repaint frames by whatever means (yourself, a pro, a powdercoater, etc.) and it's still covered by their warranty.

Check with GF customer service to be on the safe side.

Yeah, I would have liked to have seen a seat tube gusset like the Ventana hardtails.

it's a good thing gary fisher has all you guys to help them design their frames
otherwise every bike they make would probably explode
btw every fisher hardtail, 29er or not, has the same seat tube extension
i guess they must really be asking for it

I have to agree on the color, the '06 gold flake over orange is HOT!
Gee I wonder if spec'ing a too short seatpost has anything to do with the breakage issue? I have been sizing up GF 29'ers trying to figure out which on I can get and replace the fewest parts on. I'm only 5'6" and when I get the seat height right on the small (15") frame the seatpost doesn't extend below the top tube-seat tube juncture.

From the FisherBikes.com website in the Questions area (linked at the top)

Paint/Decal/Finish

Q. I'm getting my frame re-painted locally. Can I get replacement decals to put on when it's done?
A. We do not recommend non-factory re-paints and it could affect your warranty. However, we do have replacement decals available for bikes from the last 2 model years. Your local dealer can show you what is available and order them for you.

Q. I have an older bike that is in need of a paint job. Can I send it back to the factory and have Fisher do the work?
A. Yes, we do offer re-paint services for our bikes. Contact your local dealer for current color options and pricing.

The seat tubes are exploding on their own actually, without our help.
