OT: who out there is a MUSICIAN?

i was just wondering how many of you guys out there are musicians? sorry, i'm sure this has been done before, but if it had i haven't seen it so oh well. if you are a musician answer these question!!

-what instrument(s) do you play
-how long have you been playing
-what style(s) are you into playing
-what gear do you use
-are you in a band

i'm just intrested if people on here are in the music world at all.

here is about me and my setup

I'm a 17 year old junior in HS who has been playing guitar since 4th grade. i've been in a few bands as lead guitarist from styles ranging from funk to screamo to progressive metal. however now i'm more into doing my own solo acoustic stuff right now.i really only like to jam with a band if we are playing blues/jazz/with some progressive techniques thrown into the mix. here is my gear list...get ready its kind of long for a 17year old. its all in the order i got it.

-crappy crate begginer guitar
-ibanez rg520qs... best guitar i've ever played and still play it over my really expenive ones!
-ibanez acoustic... medium quality don't know model name though
-ibanez electric bass... its a cheap POS
-ibanez artcore hollow body... can't remember model number, but i love this thing for blues
-carlo robelli 12string...only bought it cause it was on sale for like 75bucks haha... did some set up work and it plays like a 400-500 dollar 12string now.
-carlo robelli fretless bass... choes this over a fender cause it sound just as good and was half the price. new pickups will make it a great buy.
-Ibanez UV777BK... steve vai signature 7string... great guitar, but my rg520 just plays so much faster then any top line ibanez, PRS, gibson, jackson, and just about anyother guitar i've ever played. but this 7string is like the greatest 7string ever made!!!!
-Carvin c980t...my new pride and joy...the best acoustic/electric carvin makes! got it for half price brand new!!!!!

as for amps i just play some crappy stuff
-little crappy crate amp
-peavy 112 express trans tube
-peavy 212 classic vtx tube amp
-hartke bass amp
looking for getting myself a mesa boogie cab/head though!

as for other instruments i own and play the piano, a kick ass pearl drum set (3500dollars new) that i don't play too oftern : ( along with a sweet harmonica, a flute...i suck real bad, but my gf is good at it, i'm really good at the cello and double bass though as i own one of each of those too, but then i own a violin...and i really suck at it!! i also own abouch of effects pedals, processors, and other music related items. i also have a 500dollar M-audio computer recording system!

so sorry for this being so long, but lets see what everyone else out there is playing!!!! i'm sure there are alot of you out there who are going to think alot of my gear is crappy and i'll agree with you...i have some crappy guitars, but you can't go wrong with the rg520, uv777bk, and the carvin!!!!! gosh with all the money i've spent on music i could have bought a used bmw m3!!!

ps. i'm about to purchase a classical guitar so i can get my Bach on and my familyi is also getting rid of our piano in hopes of making room in our house for a baby grand!

lets see what everyone else out there is doing in the muisc world!! let see pics!

yes...

-what instrument(s) do you play
Five string bass (main instrument)
Guitar (adequate rhythm guitarist)
Keyboards (make noise)
Sing (more like yell)

-how long have you been playing
26 years, started when I was 16 in high school, always played bass

-what style(s) are you into playing
Funk, rock (heavy/new wave), jazz

-what gear do you use
Homemade guitars and basses, I'm just starting to make my third bass. the one on the left is my main axe right now. 5 string fretless with EMGs in it.

I also have a 16 track ADAT based recording studio in my basement. I play my bass through a 500W Carvin head with 1x18 and 2x10 cabs.

-are you in a band
Yep, Version Larry. We haven't been playing out much lately (too much of life getting in the way) but we try to jam once a week in my basement. Someone told me we sound like a combination of Black Sabbath/Green Day/David Bowie if that makes sense.

wow man!!! nice bass set up there!! i'm really intrested in building guitars and this summer i might do some luthier appretiance work in british columbia on buildnig classical guitars and learn to do inlay work, but right now i'm trying to get all the parts together for my next project. i'm making a fretless guitar out of a crappy fixed bridge ibanez, putting a fernandes sustainer in it, have to make a custom nut and maybe some custom modding to the stock bridge to get the action and intonation right! it should be fun! i got the idea from seeing steve vai palying a fretless guitar on the G3 video and i decided i need one! it will be werid playing a guitar with a fixed bridge though...i'm a flloyd rose kind of guy. the guitar i'm using is hard to find cause i'm getting it used and ibanez donest hardly make fixed bridged guitars and the ones they do aren't really expensive, but model i want has to have the right neck, a wizard II, and i won't go new cause i'm not going to cut up and tear up a new neck..i'd feel bad. plus i'm going to have the guitar repainted anf if all goes well, i will eventually swap out everything to a better full custom ibanez knock off body and have some sexy custom inlay done to the fret board!!

way to rock the carvin amps man!!! i really want a carvin cab with a triple rectifier head : )

i use to play bass in a band that really just manily covered dream theater..ick..i dont like them, but they had some sweet six string bass stuff, but i had to barrow a bass to play it and i didn't care enough to stick with them so i quit..shouldn't have. the guitarist in my band was amazing. he got a near full ride scholarship to berklee school of music and in the guitar center competition he was beat by the some guy who finish like 2nd or 3rd in the compition the previous year. kids got insane chops and can play any dream theater, vai, satch, becker, angelo, song he wants and he has only been playing for aobut 5 years. he got to show john petrucci his skill and even petrucci was impressed and said that he hasn't seen anyone so good back stage who wasn't already a know name. i mean petrucci asked to jam for a few minutes with the kid before they had to leave!!!

mad props man!!

ps. man sounds like an intresting sound your band has! if i were to be in another band i would have to be a funk/jazz band or a progressive/jam band. cause if i'm not playing the blues, jazz, neo classical stuff then i'm shredding stuff like jason becker, vai, and a few other shredders.

hey nice jem man!! i really want a jem 10th!! soo sexy! I sitll think that the ibanez wizard II necks play faster then any other neck and i feel that ibanez have the fastest feeling IMO. i've played a jem DNA, LNG, BFP, 7vwh, and then the regular floral pattern an while all very sexy looking and sounding i would only change one thing....if only i had a jem and UV with a wizard II... i would be in heaven!!!

ps. I HATE jem 555's......grrr

yea.. 555s are weak.. cheaply made..
anything 7 plays like a dream.. a friend of mine had a 7vwh, and the neck was a bit thicker, had a really solid feel and sustain to it, but just wasn't as fast as the 7DBK

cheers mate

-what instrument(s) do you play
guitar, rythm, lead

-how long have you been playing
let's see.. 41 years old, started when I was about 15
don't want to do the math!

-what style(s) are you into playing
rock, prog rock, alt

-what gear do you use
PRS guitar, custom Rivera amp, basic fx, a little delay mainly
have had everything from small basic combos to use huge stereo rack setups

-are you in a band
no..
have been in numerous bands around Austin, but been 10 years since last gig, got burned out... used to rehearse 20-30hrs a week, several recording sessions, several local live tv shows, several videos

I now play for fun when I have the time.. I tend to get back into guitar heavy in the winter if the weather sucks....

I would much rather be riding than stuck in a dark rehearsal studio

Kawai drum module
An old Radius Mac clone running a Digidesign Sample Cell Nubus card, Turbosynth and Bias Peak (got a bud who works there)
Rhodes 73 electric piano wtih Dyno mod (on loan from a bud, needs tuning)
Soon to inherit a Baldwin piano from my mom's house, as soon as I can afford to have it delivered.

Guitar stuff:
Little VOX amp, I modified to incude an effects loop
Fender Stratocaster, a cheaper one but good tone, stays in tune okay
Fender Lead II that still needs rebuilding
Lots of stomp boxes

My studio setup is all in pieces at the moment, but I'm building it back up soon.

My Gear

It's nice to know that other people here play music as well. I play drums and it's my main passion next to mountain bikes. So, in order:

What instrument do I play? Drums.

How long? Over 20 years (but I'm still practicing )

What style? Rock, Pop, Metal, Blues, Funk, R&B, Soul, some Jazz (I love all kinds of music, but I mainly play in the Rock genre).

What gear do I use? DW drums and pedals, Zildjian cymbals, Evans drumheads, AKG mics, VF 55A or 5A sticks. Sometimes for other gigs I'll use my PDP kit.

In a band? As of late, I've been performing with a couple bands (hired gun), but I'm looking for something more steady. I love performing live!

Rock on, everyone!!!

Jeez, music was my whole life up until about a year ago.
I play trumpet (since 4th grade), guitar (since 8th grade), and banjo (for 3 years)..
I have lots of guitars that I never play now- college has sucked my soul dry, thankfully I still get to ride!

Guitars:
Custom B.C. Rich Beast
Gibson Les Paul (2)
Gibson Les Paul Custom Art Historic, "Old Hickory"
Gibson Explorer
Gibson ES-135
Kenny Hill Classical guitar, spruce

I play pretty much any kind of music, of which jazz is my favorite.

I'm an electronic producer, been doing this 16 years now. I mainly use Cubase SX3.1, Ableton Live 5.2, A Virus TI, MOTU Ultralite, Elektron Machinedrum, Pod XT, Ibanez s540fmTT, Allen & Heath Xone 62, 2x Technics Sl 1200mk3d's, and a tb303.

Music is pretty much my life, MTB is a break from it A very nice one admittedly.

Here's a link to my tunes, check out the downtempo songs if you're not into electronic dance music:

I would think that there would be a lot of musicians who mtb because of the physicality/coordination/endorphin thing, I know that's true for me as a drummer.
Played since 5th grade on the same set I bought used with my paperboy money, bout 25years ago. Its an old blue Rogers 4 piece, very swanky looking.
Always played in one or more bands at a time except during a couple breaks. First band was a mod cover band around the time of Quadraphenia, right now it's a punk band called Suzi Homewreker http://www.myspace.com/suzihomewreker and some experimental percussion/noise stuff in development. We recently did music for a Burlesque play, kinda old fashioned bluesy stuff for the bump-n-grind.
I like to play and perform a lot so I'm always trying to start something new.

Some nice gear. Good looking basses, I love those Fender Lead II's build that sucker. Sounds like a decent guitar you have planned to build.

I play guitar, and mess arround on bass, but I suck.

My current set up is lacking, simply a 79 Japan made Fender Strat, and my Tacoma acoustic, EMG pickup. My only amp any more is a Mesa/Boogie Rockett 44 combo, running at half power.

I dont play in a band, but played a bit live with friends, not in a couple years.

My past gear list is as follows

Fender Strat, Jap, still own.
Applause acoustic, sold
Fender Jap strat, sold
64 Gretch solid body, forgot name - sold
Danelectro reissue, sold
Jap hollowbody, sold
Jap Jazzmaster copy, dissasembled
crap strat copy, dissasembled.
Ibanez JS100, sold
73 Fender Musicmaster, sold
92 Fender Japan Telecaster, sold.
Ibanez RG 5XX, sold
Hamer SATF, sold - wish I still had this one
I know Ive forgot several, I made a list once and it was over 20 guitars. I am pretty good friends with some dealers, so I get to have alot of em.

Several amps, almost all tube. Too many effects to name, but now I dont play with any. My mesa, my guitar, and me. Or the acoustic, which I play almost exclusevly now.

My guilty guitar is a Parker Fly. PIMP with the carbon neck, SS frets. Has to be the absolute fastest, easy to play guitar ever. Also love PRS, but havent been impressed with playability. Warrior Instruments makes some killer stuff too, a joy to play.

Good luck to all the giging musicians, and it was fun to read all the gear. And Tarekith, thats a nice setup, and some good music. im impressed.

I have a '65 Fender Mustang that, along with an old Vox amp, I got as a trade for an old pool table. I play rock (and now that I'm a dad, lots of kids music), but the best thing I do is teach free guitar classes to kids after school through an orginization called Litttle Kids Rock.

Right now I've got a bunch of 9 and 10 year olds playing AC/DC, Ramones, Jet, and Pink Floyd (the easy songs). After a while the kids start writing their own songs, which I record, add some drum/bass tracks, and they sound great. We've even had some famous musicians (Jason Newsted, Roy Rogers, etc.) cover the kids songs so we can sell them as fundraisers.

I used to play Trumpet & French Horn, but after high school I got myself a Fender Squier Strat off Ebay, and now I have:

Epiphone SG copy
Ephiphone Les Paul Custom
Washburn X2 or somethin like that
Ephiphone Acoustic

Been playing for about 5 years

I've got a couple random pedals: (I don't have them with me so I can't name all of them)
Boss Equalizing pedal
Boss DS-1 Distortion pedal
Ibanez Weeping Demon Wah pedal
and an Ibanez phaser pedal

I use a Marshall MG50 (I think thats what it is) amp

I'm in a band of a bunch of rookies, but would like to play in a band with people better than me so I can improve. I love playing Punk, Alt Rock, or Rock. Think Stone Temple Pilots, Velvet Revolver mixed with Green Day, Offspring, Smashing Pumpkins, Bush, and Foo Fighters.

But I can't start talking about playing in a band cause I'll want to go buy new equipment

It's good to see muzos represented so well here on mtbr..

I'm not a musician per se, but I am proud to say, I can make noise on most any instrument that I've laid hands on, and I've laid hands on some strange ones...

I do play a little acoustic guitar, I have a Martin D28.

Mostly, I have been a live sound engineer for the last 25 years.

Here are just a few pics I have laying around and sized. If they come up in order, my 'desk', an old picture of Ashanti, Busta Rhymes, Art Garfunkel, and Joan Jett.

Kramer Strat rip off
Peavey EVH Wolfgang
Takamine acoustic
and my new favorite thing in the world...
Taylor 814ce grand auditorium

Effects:

Not currently in a band..grad school limits my life to playing in my apartment and riding the Pittsburgh area singletrack!!

Been playing drums for 42 years. Learned how to play lefty about 30 years ago, after seeing Billy Cobham blow my mind! Double-bass setup, gongs, percussion toys galore. Vai is God, also like good fusion, ala Dream Theater, Gordian's Knot, Dave Weckl, etc. Seen Vai twice, including most recent tour here in Chicago.
Classically trained, no band. Gotta get a midi keyboard and put some of this stuff in my head on tracks. Been awhile since I played - renting a house for me and the family until next July. I write music frequently while riding. After the first hour, everything starts to get very clear for me. Marathon and song in hand, I return to the crib triumphant! (Not every ride ends with a tune, though...)

-what instrument(s) do you play
Bass and upright bass a little classical guitar , can't play with a pick!
-how long have you been playing
27 years doh!
-what style(s) are you into playing
Jazz, funk, r&b (60,70's stuff)
-what gear do you use
the list is too long....mostly basses I made myself, I tend to play more on my 5 str fretless basses, and the upright.
I have a 1964 Ampeg B-15 for the uprite and a Mackie SRM450 for electric bass , with a Universal Audio LA610 preamp , on big outside stages I bring a EV SXA180 sub.
-are you in a band
I have a "jazzish" trio with a guitarist and a singer , and a full blown 8 piece corporate band..... I write a bit too on my own , I'll do something one day with those songs....

Play professionaly , I am also a sound technician. Tours , festival , and at a concert hall.

I also own a studio, long list of gear , HD recording ( G5 and Digital Performer5 ) as a live sound engineer , I bring the Powerbook for SpectraFooX

I had a "enduro" bike race , 3 days, 110Km per day, a tough one, just after a tour that was alcoholicaly deep, thats when I learned that music full time and bike racing don't go together........

Insturments I play:
french horn and bass, and can hold my own on trumpet

How long I've played them:
played Horn for about 8 years (insturment I started on in school)
I taught myself Bass a bit over a year ago, so I'm pretty decent by now

Insturments:
Horn: Holton Farkas
Bass: BC Rich Warlock (4 string)

Styles:
As far as bass, I play mostly death metal (know alot of Opeth and Behemoth, and some Death), as well as some black metal (Dimmu Borgir, Bathory), as well as some classic rock stuff (mostly Led Zeppelin and Cream)

Band:
not in a band, just have some friends I jam with sometimes

there are alot of bassists here, bass guitars and bikes must get along well....

Another drummer here. I have been playing for about 20 years on and off. (Nine years in the military didn't allow me to keep up with it as much as I would have liked to.)

I am just getting back into jamming with folks now. In fact, I just came home from a classic rock jam session.

As for drum gear I am in-between drum kits right now and am in the process of getting one put together. I have a nice set of Sabian cymbals, a bunch of Pearl drum hardware and a Pearl snare drum. A Yamaha snare drum and a Ludwig snare drum. I am considering going to a local music store and picking up a bunch of percussion stuff. Hopefully I will have a complete drum kit in a few months.

The only instrument

I have is my voice. I sing constantly. My Broke Back Mountain Biking friends, play the Rusty Trombone, and the Skin Flute, but that doesn't really count.

Whorehey, G and D, you know who you are!

Bass / Keys

I play Bass; I have also dabbled into keyboard a bit earlier in life. I was pretty good at that, although I am still learning on the bass. I took up bass about two years ago after smashing my hand nicely in a riding accident, it left a lot of damaged muscles that needed some form of exercise, having enjoyed many great songs all of which feature great baselines, I though that was the instrument for me... Also not being able to play guitar worth a **** helped

I currently play a Fender American Jazz bass, which I imported from the USA, as the sunburst body / maple neck combination is pretty rare in Australia, not to mention very expensive. I was playing though a Gallien Krueger 800RB and an Ampeg SVT410he cabinet but I sold those to fund moving interstate, looking for a good combo amp at the moment.

I don't currently play in a band, but have dabbled in songwriting with a mates rockabilly project, we play maybe once a month or there abouts and have a good time

If "aficionados" count...

I'll chime in....

Instruments?
Electric (rythm - can't play a solo even if my life would depend on it, just like I just can't huck!) and acoustic Guitar and.... uh, guitar. I can "read" (see and recognize what chords are being played on the fretboard) charango and venezuelan cuatro but can't play them, maybe if I would practice.

How long?
Since I was 15, I'm 31... so that would make 16, but take off three that I haven't plucked a string.

Style?
Rock and roll, of course... maybe some metal as my main influences come from there.
Latinamerican - no, not salsa or charanga. Traditional south american music mainly, the kind that is played with just a guitar, a drum called bombo, a charango (tiny 5-double strung guitar, with the box made off from armadillo's shell) and quena (flute) or windpipes (or sikus, in quechua dialect)

Set-up?
For the electric part:
Yamaha 120-SD (discontinued) with DiMarzio's Paf Pro and Fred neck and bridge pick-ups... as I praise full-sussers, I can't play other than humbuckers. Oh... and gauge 10 stringset... any will do, but I liked D'Addario and Slinky's. Long scale (25 1/4") with the low E string dropped to D.
Cheapo Laney HCR-30 combo. 30W RMS
(Blingy) Mesa-Boogie V-Twin Preamp with 2 12AX7 preamp tubes, STR which sound a bit rough and saturate rather easy, which I love. When I want more headroom I swap them for some other 12AX7's that have a lower output and more headroom, Groove Tubes I guess.

For the Latinamerican part:
Washburn cheapo dreadnought with hybrid gauge 10 phosphor bronze Ernie Balls
Classic Spaniard guitar. I guess it's a mexican Tres Pinos, which is a nice quality one with Black Beauty strings (can't remember the brand now, in Mexico you just go and grab them from the shop).

Band?
Used to... lousy rock band while I was in university.
In my spare time (back in those days too) I used to go with my pals from the southamerican music band and play at restaurants, parties and buses for money... LOL... that was crazy. But we had a serious side on that band and we got to play for cultural events and we even had a presentation of our own at a theather.

Music and MTB are my "therapies"... the stuff that glues all the stuff in my mind for good and avoids me going sane and happy all the time.
Who needs getting high or drunk when you can get high while playing your eloved instrument and hurt yourself bad and feel sore the day after when you go out with the bike?

Nice to see so many musicians- surprised that drummers are so underrepresented!! I'm a percussionist by heart, drummer, bass, and didgeridoo. Playing for about 8-10 years. Tama drum kit, myriad LP and authentic percussion insts, Yamaha 4-string with passive pick ups/Fender 10" standard elec b that sounds real' nice. Didg is bamboo.

PS: That Ashanti pic is HOT!

Skillet Lickers represent

Fiddle, Banjo (Clawhammer), Hammered Dulcimer and a bit of guitar. All acoustical in the old time/appalachian style. Since 1973. Used to play out until the bar scene got old 20 years ago, have just been a kitchen musician ever since.

Full Pearl Masters BRX birch kit
Full Pearl Masters MRX maple kit (selling soon, Im a birch kinda guy I guess)
DW snare, Pork Pie snare as back up, and just about to order a custom Truth snare
first cymbal set is a full Paiste Sig series
second is a custom dark K Zildjian set
Pearl rack and DW pedal HH stand

My wife and I play in a 5 piece Christain band that plays rock music. We are also building a studio as well.

Another fav of mine is Sound Refinement, I have a decent small JBL SRX722/718 system-Allen & Heath and what ever else is laying around and I have provided sound and mixing for some small local bands. One band in paticular is a blues band that just opened up for Johnny Winters.
Fun stuff!

Lately Ive been stuck in that dark studio doing some recording and remixing, I dont like it much, give me the live stage.

Here's a pic of the band at BB Kings last year.

John

The one on the left is the better one...

Both are homemade, and both are through necks (you can't see the neck on the left one because the cap wood goes over it).

The one on the right is an active, fretted five string with Carvin pickups. The one the left is an active five string fretless loaded with EMGs. If I could do it over again, I'd shave more off the front of the fretless, the strings are too close to the front of the bass for good popping. Though its a fretless, so you can only go so far with popping and slapping on that anyway.

I just started laying out my third bass. Its going to be a fretted five string with either EMGs or Barts in it. Personally I think the pickups have more to do with the sound than anything else.

Thanks for the comments,
John

What do u play?

Cello

How long have u been playing?

around 10 years

What style do you play?

I originally started off playing just classical but when i got to college i started playing with different groups to make extra money, like at weddings and stuff. THen one day a guy that lives on my dorm invited me to play with his band as an experement, having the cello take up the rythm guitar riff. Not quite sure what genre i would fit in now that i play in a rock band.

What kind of gear do u have?

Alessandro Commendulli cello, with Jagar strings, shitty bow though

Are u in a band?

Um played with a few different groups, some profesional and now a band called "A Kings Ransom"

I play guitar, but took piano lessons as a kid and can still find my way around on one. I've been playing guitar since 1984 with a 9 year break in there. I started up again 3 years ago.

As far as styles go, I listen to pretty much anything with guitar in it, but my playing is pretty much straightforward metal (heavily 80s influenced).

As far as gear goes, my guitars are: 3 Kramer Barettas, Schecter PT Blackjack, Schecter C1 Hellraiser, Schecter 006 Blackjack. For amplification, I use a Crate Blue Voodoo 120 head, Crate 412 cabinets with Celestion V30s, Line 6 Spider II HD. Effects are: BBE 362 Sonic Maximizer, Digitech GNX3. For wireless I use ElectroVoice. I also have an endorsement with Curt Mangan strings (Steel Wound .10-.52)

I am currently forming a band, although you can listen to a few tracks off my last CD:

Dream

Let me know what you think!

AC/DC, Scorpions, and such.... but more into Jazz, and Classical these days..

As for what I think.. I think you guys sounded very tight, and you definitely captured that vintage Metallica sound that I used to love...

Do you guys take it easy on the trail sometimes if it is looking over your head, with the thought in the back of your mind, "I don't want to spill on the this and ruin my arm/fingers/chops for X number of months?"

I do =)

it's a hobby and not a living for me, so no... but to be honest, I take it easy cause I've got a stay at home wife, and two little kids to feed... and that would certainly suffer if I bit the dust!

I used to worry about that constantly when I played music for a living. Now that it's just a hobby for me, I still worry, but not as much.
