Monocog 29er
The production bikes are due next week!
This is the 17" pre-production bike
IMG_4007.jpg
I took it for a very short spin. Felt nice and I liked the fit. Should be spot-on with my dropbars.

Thanks Shiggy.
Love the stealth black look. Hopefully it will be the production color as well.

Thanks for stopping by the Redline pit today Shiggy!
The Redline Monocog 29er will be on display throughout this weekend at the Sea Otter Classic just in case others want to check it out in person.

What cranks will come on the production. Was planning to upgrade them until I heard Truvativ might be one there. Thanks.

or do the 17" here and the 19" on the website look almost exactly the same? Maybe it's just a camera trick deal.

Do they make a size smaller than 17"? Shiggy, would you go with the 17" frame because of your preference for a long stem and drop bars?

I would prefer a slightly longer stem on the stock 17" I rode but I did not feel cramped at all.
I guessed the 17" would fit me based on the ST angle and the ETT length (which is the same as the 19" Monocog 26er). I was right.

I asked Mike today. RPM is mainly an OEM component manufacturer. Good basic parts at a good price.

RPM components are entry level cranksets from FSA (Th Industries - Taiwan). We've been running them on the 26" Monocogs for 4-5 years with no reports of any problems. Good stuff and affordable.
Monocog 29er sizes are 15,17,19 and 21".

Is the front wheel on the 29 a Q/R or bolt on style? Just wondering... I'm hoping to receive mine by the end of next week.... and it is disc brake ready right... the set of Avids I have laying here need nothing else (except new cables and housing) to get going...
Thanks
FF

I think its quick release based on the end of the axle in the picture.
I'm waiting for mine too, ordered in San Francisco week and a half ago (19").
Its beginning to feel a bit like Christmas.

Banzai,
I have heard of some shops not wanting to stock 29er's on their floors yet, big bummer....
If you tell me where you are, I can point you in best direction to get one. Any shop that sells Redline Bicycles can order for you. Let me know.....

monocog 29er lost at sea?
It seems as though the monocog 29er has not arrived into port in seattle. According to seattle bike supply the ship is still out to sea. I hope the name of the ship was'nt the titanic.. anyway I guess they will be here when the get here. What is it they say about a watched pot never boils..bikerdad36

I really hope Redline does well with this bike because they've got such a significant sentimental history for anyone who rode BMX through the years. Who didn't lust after a set of Redline Flights, right? Good on them for breaking out what looks to be a great 29er ride at a great pricepoint.
Pic of my Redline (which unfortunately collects quite a bit of dust in the garage )

Craig -
Is the first batch of bike enough to fill the orders - or will there be outstanding orders on back order after the first batch of complete bikes arrive?
Thanks

I have been told that number of outstanding orders we already have out number the amount of units we have coming in on the first shipments. Our initial forecasts were blown out of the water....... are you from a shop???

I talked to my Redline rep today and he said I'll get one for sure. I was a bit worried.

No - BikerBob.com out of Ohio was getting me one - I ordered with him approx a month ago and didn't know how it worked if the orders were back ordered in the way they were placed - or they just show up instock and then its the mad dash to get a bike ordered....
Thanks
Fred

Crap. My shop hasn't called back to ask for the deposit so I'm sure they haven't even placed the order for mine. Bye bye bicycle.
Looks like I'll be getting that cross bike after all...

My rep at SBS said tomorrow before official orders can be placed. They're not in the system yet today. Also, more coming May 1. Don't give up hope.

Not a bad problem to get blown out of the water on your initial forecasts. Looks like demand continues to pressure the supply.

Well hot damn! I thought is was going to be more than the 26" version.
Maybe I should've waited and saved myself some $$ from the OnOne.
(Not to say I don't like the OnOne, but @ 1/2 the price!)

Redline even doubled the first shipments after positive responses in the 29" media (here). Something for other manufactueres to learn from. Before they do, we'll just all get an extra Redline which we dearly need for...well you know...
Unfortunately the 29" climate in Europe is not yet such that we'll see them rolling here. People are not afraid to own 1+ bikes, and the price could really make them give 29" a go.
Perhaps we'll have to run a poll to see where these Monocog 29ers are going : extra bike for already-converts, or someone's first 29", perhaps first 29SS.
I hope some also are for the actual shop floor, dealers that are converts themselves but don't have a public to sell expensive bikes to.

Im new to the 29'er world, curious how this bike at this price relates to the "you get what you pay for" saying?
Im interested in giving a 29'er a try, but want quality products, specially on the trail.
My lbs can get me one as stated above for under 500$ which almost scares me...

No worries.
While it's prudent to be wary of new products, the 26er Monocog has been on the market for years, and despite an even lower msrp than the 29er, has developed a favorable reputation and a strong following. You may sacrafice some durability at this price point, but more likely the only significant penalty will be weight.

Gears and suspension forks cost a lot. Leave them off and you can make a solid bike very cheaply.
If anyone in the East Bay (CA) gets one, come by and we can do a trail shootout with my BM Flyer. Retail cost is just about the same.

Agreed, the 26" Monocog has been around for a long time and is very well regarded. It (and its components) are built like a tank, which means it's quite heavy for a rigid V-brake singlespeed but also indestructible. I'm sure the 29" version will be a very hot seller.

The old adage "strong, light, cheap: pick two" applies here.
The Monocog (26 and 29) is not light. The parts are reasonably durable and mostly house branded. They will do the job. No bling. Few special features (no EBB or sliding dropouts, no shaped tubing, no suspension). You do get a disc ready bike which is a cool at this price point.
The main thing you get with more expensive bikes is less weight and more features.
This is a bike (like the 26er is) many will buy to test the 29er waters. If and when they like the big wheels (and singlespeed) they upgrade to a fancy bike.
Then there are the bike junkies like me who are getting one as a "backup" bike because it is such a good deal and it can be loaned out to friends. A bike to ride and trash and not worry about.

I've had a 26 monocog for several years now. I bought the frame and fork for like an unreal $109 bucks online. Parts off a busted stumpjumper and liked singlespeeding but now its my modified 3-speed with a Nexus wheel. Nice bike with a kick brake!
The steel frame rides really smooth. I didn't notice a weight gain compared to my old stumpjumper, even though it was about four pounds heavier at around 27 pounds on a bathroom scale. But I was more concentrated on adjusting to a singlespeed style, and I feel the 29er is going to be a lot of fun. I like the 32-20 for the hills in Marin, maybe a 22 for the ridges.
My LBS said later this week.

Well It doesn't look like I am in the first round of Monocog fun
Just touched base with the LBS that handles Redline and they weren't sure if they where going to be able to get one from the first batch (even though I put a Deposit down on Jan 16th) It probally has alot to due with the fact its a small low volume bike shop, and they are nice but laid back , meaning no Balls.....
I heard him call his rep or distributor or whatever they have and he just kindly asked, and was told his order wasn't near the top of the list he basically said ok and left it at that.
if I don't get it quick I might just wait for the Haro Mary SS....

I'm in the same boat. I'm going to go find out about this Haro Mary right now.
I called my LBS twice over the weekend, they said they would call Redline and get back to me if I need to bring them the deposit cash, still no word. They don't seem too interested in helping me out, I don't know if they realize how popular of a bike this is turning out to be.
Maybe I'm going to have to look on the Redline site and find a different dealer.
Until then, the cash is currently going to be set aside to order an IRO Rob Roy...just waiting for the LBS to call and tell me they can't get one...(yes I am being very positive about this)

I heard him call his rep or distributor or whatever they have and he just kindly asked, and was told his order wasn't near the top of the list he basically said ok and left it at that.
if I don't get it quick I might just wait for the Haro Mary SS....
|
The second shipment of MCs is due May 1.
The target date for the Mary is August assuming not too many changes are needed from the preproduction frames.

I paid the whole amount in the middle of March for the monocog.
Now, my LBS called me again today just to say that I'll have to wait another two weeks instead of the end of the week before I can get my sweaty hands on this bike. Nice shop manager taking care of his customers.
Thank God its been raining like a MF, so its not too bad waiting....

My lbs can get me one as stated above for under 500$ which almost scares me...

I'm just like this guy only difference is that I'm new to the SS design as well!! I'm thinking of buying this bike but had a few questions like where in the site can I find out the standover and TT legnth? WHat is it for the 17", 19 or Medium for the 29ers?
I have two Jamis w/these top tube #s
17" 05 XLT=22.5"
19" 03 dakar=23.75" <--great help from my friend Kam
I'm 5-9 and weight 210 pounds (or somwhere around the ballpark )
second question is can u put a diff fork on this bike to make it semi plush?
again, I'm very new to the Design and only been on the trails for a little over 5years!! this will be my first stiff SS bike so I got very little knowledge.

Are your top tubes measured effectively or actually? Sounds like you want the 17" Redline, it will be fine. If will handle wour weight no-problem, it's got lots of steel in it.
The fork is suspension-corrected. For semi-plush you may also just consider different handlebars. At least Ti H-Bars did that for me on my Surly.

Heck yeah! My LBS just called and said they could bet me the 17" MC 29er out of this second batch coming in May.
I'm going to put down $100 bucks today and then start praying to the bicycle manufacturing gods that I actually end up with one.
I am so pumped up!

Redline doesn't have specs on their site yet for the Monocog 29er, I ordered one anyway. I hope I have sufficent clearance...

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Are the 26" in aluminum and steel the same size? My shop had not even heard of them yet, and they weren't listed in his '06 book. No contact info on the Redline site or Seattle Bike Supply, so I can't email/call them. Maybe I'll try the dealer again. I was hoping the Redline poster would reply.

At my LBS, we decided that the area labeled Monocog on the Redline site referred to the Monocog 29er. Notice the standover heights are higher on the Monocog versus the Monocog Flight. I placed my order accordingly. Now I'm just hoping I get in on the first round of bikes!

Actually, I'm pretty sure it is the 29er dimensions. The 26" monocogs (Steel and AL) have the same dimensions - the left chart marked Flight Monocog. The right chart is definitely a different bike. Longer TT, longer wheelbase, higher BB, etc...

Monocog Sizing
Sorry for the confusion on our website this morning. I saw all the posts and have our Art/IT guys on it. Hopefully fixed in the next 15 minutes or so....
The chart that shows "Monocog Flight" should say Monocog Flight/ Monocog" and the chart that just shows "Monocog" should say "Monocog 29er" (the upper right area). Looks like a few of you have figured this out. Let me know if you have any more questions....
Thanks,
Craig - Redline

Ordered mine yesterday. I was told one month.
I was pretty stoked on my buddies mono26 when he got it. Now I am super jazzed on the mono29. When I get it, I plan on being stupified... hehe.. well sort of.
Way to go Redline! My LBS appreciated your referral greatly.

The full specs and geometry have been up on the Redline site for several months.

Outstanding, thanks!
Now that I look at those numbers I'm wondering if the 21" is too big. I'm 6'2" with a 34" inseam and I always seem to be borderline L or XL with bike fit. So with the XL I've got an inch of clearance, so I suppose I'll go with that size. The local shops I've asked said this will be special order for them, so no chance to size before I ride.

Yes, it is. The specs for every adult bike Redline makes is on that page and the quote standover is for the 29er.

Didn't mean to add to the confusion; it was clearly not labeled correctly. Now that the website is fixed I can see you are correct.

Trigger Pulled
Just got back from dropping off the deposit. Now to wait for it. I'm already looking at tires and handlebars and all sorts of stuff.
Anybody got gearing suggestions? Specs show it stock as a 32x20 but I'm thinking a smaller cog in the back would help me alot. I'm out here in Illinois, I ride in Wi and IN also most climbs are short and steep so I don't think I'll need the 20..

I used to ride in Chicagoland until I moved away last year, I had a Karate Monkey, My daily gear was 34-18, which works great at Knoch Knolls and Palos, if I was planning a long weekend in Wis Or MI I would put on 34-20, and if I was riding on the PP or LSD I would put on a 16 for some speed.
Tell Brian I said hey!

Freewheel or cog? The Monocog wheels have a cassette hub.

ShinKen,
I'd try The Path in Tustin..... I'm not sure if they have any coming, but I know they're a strong a dealer of ours....
From what I've been told we are completely sold out of the first batch which will hit here in Seattle tomorrow morning. Another wave will hit about 10 days later with those all spoken for. Hopefully we'll have few extras when the next batch hits at the end of May.
Good luck!

Hey Vapors,
I set my order through Performance in San Francisco and with the "membership" card I got double points on a sale deal. Over $90 bucks in coupons to go towards some Avid mechs. Yessssssss! The shop guys here seem to have it together and Ron the buyer talks to the Seatle guys often and assured me that my order from March will get me a bike in a few weeks. The members card is a pretty good deal if you buy parts alot--especially if you can get them to special order things. My fingers are crossed.

Good deal! Now I'm trying to figure out if I should come up with plan B since I'll likely have to wait over a month for the monocog29er. I can think of a few things to use from my current bike that I'm parting out to sell (magura marta's, race face deus stem and carbon face handle bars, easton ec90 seat post if a single speed 29 frame exists with a 27.2 seat post diameter. Sigh...

Monocog 29er's are in the building!
Just an FYI that the first batch of Monocog 29er's have arrived and are starting to ship out this morning. We've built one up for QC and they look great. If anybody's interested I can throw up some pics of the production sample from this morning.
I also want to say "Thanks" for all that put in a deposit, or paid in full for something you haven't seen. I think that once it's in front of you, you'll agree it was worth the wait. Please PM me or post your opinions after you ride them.
Thanks again,

Sweet that you guys are working today, its a holiday for me and some other people.
I would like to see some actual pics if you get the chance, I'm assuming they are going to look pretty much the same as what we've seen so far.
This is exciting even though I'm probalby not getting one out of the first batch.

Yes, I'd love to see additional pics. I'm curious about the rear end, will it be possible to swap the bolt for a quick release? I'd also like to see how the gusset on the head tube turned out. I ended up going with the 19" instead of the 21", my favorite ballet isn't the Nutcracker so 1" clearance wouldn't do. I have to wait almost a month for mine because I'm out of town.

Small world.
Only met him once, but we ride for the same team - Paint Creek Bicycles. (I think he's a roadie...I ride mountain bikes. ).

My body just hurts looking at that thing...
I can't image riding that ball busting alloy frame in the rocks, roots, and bumps on my local trails. If I lived in Bend or some other sandy place it would be great. Regardless, an outstanding bargain for a pretty nicely equipped bike. Nice!

The Monocog 853 version of a 26" and 29" will be in around August and manufactured/ shipped from Taiwan, not China.

I also want to say "Thanks" for all that put in a deposit, or paid in full for something you haven't seen. I think that once it's in front of you, you'll agree it was worth the wait. Please PM me or post your opinions after you ride them.
Thanks again,

Whimp!
I have no problem with steel alloy frames being harsh, even after several years an a titanium alloy bike.
Your aluminum alloy full squishies must be making you soft.
