I am getting something bike related for my B-day. My wife is willing to buy me a full suspension frame up to around $699, or I could ask for a Monocog 29er. I already have a SSso I could upgrade a few of the parts instantly (bars, stem, cranks, BB, pedals, seat)

everything else looks good on the bike.

advice please, my current SS is a little too small for me, and I would be turing that into a fun little BMX cruiser style bike if I got this Monocog.

The specs are for a cross bike.However,the geometry icon gives the geo and specs.Still doesn't answer the question,tho.

The guys at the bike shop called SBS for me and the MSRP is $499 for the 29er and $449 for the 26" Monocog.

Anyone know how heavy these things are? Similar to a surly? Someone told me that the monocog was heavier than a 1 x 1 so figures this could be heavier than a KM.
I want to get a friend on a cheap 29er and he does not have much $$.
I was going to get him to hold out for the complete kona 2-9 build but this looks like a good buy then upgrade to disk with some clearence sale hunting.

The Redline web page lists matte green. Maybe it is my monitor but it looks black to me. Any one see one in person or are they not available yet?

It is green, though very dark. It's a cool color, looks green to black in different lighting.

Website lists a 135mm rear spacing. If so, good to see the Redline move up to this standard. One listing on the full spec says " 130mm old rear". What does this mean. Is it truely 130mm instead of 135??

Sweet!!! This may do it for me. I've been lurking for a built KM, but this is going to be even cheaper!

Any idea on release date? The GA SS Champs are in late March and I'd sure like to ride it with big wheels.

If you look at the very bottom of the page, you'll see tabs of our different models. Click on the Monocog 29 tab for accurate specs. Sorry for any confusion....

Some of the posts above are showings inacurate specs for this model.
Wheel = Alex DH-19 Rims, Stainless spokes, Redline (Formula) Sealed bearing - disc compatible hubs (135mm rear OLD).
Weight = 27lbs (MSRP US$450-470) I'm working on lighter tube set for a "Flight" version of this model for 07..

ETA for the Monocog 29" is mid March. We're expecting no surprises as these are pretty much the same parts as our 26" version (except wheels, tires, etc). and the tubesets are the same as our 26" version (except for the 29" specific geometry)

Putting the thought of a GF RIg or Niner on old for five bills. I want to get into this 29 thingy and was about to pull the trigger on a Rig at my LBS this weekend. I got extra hydros, a H-bar on the way (for the SS 26" - may need to get another if I like it) and my fav seat and pedals. March (tick, tick tick)

For $500 it is a great price to enter into the 29er world. Especially given the reliability and good reviews of the 26 inch version.

I am excited about bring these bike to "normal" people. At this price, it makes the bikes a viable option for people looking for decent bikes. Simplicity of a SS, and add big comfy wheels and tires! I think they will make ss mtb'ing in general more accessable to a wider range of riders.

A cheap 29'r to ride and see if I even like before diving in really deep first.

It also leaves tons of room to gradually upgrade at will without spending too much all at once.

Okay folks, let's think of some sensible upgrades for the stock Monocog29.

Obviously, Avid Mechanical Discs, BB5. $120 or so including rotors? What cheaper options are there, perhaps with a larger front rotor?

To drop over a pound, Maxxis Ignitor or Bontrager XR tires seem interesting. $70?
Another half pound with lighter tubes, 26x2.3. $15?

We all have pedals, flatties are cool to have though. I like them for winter touring with my warmer hiking shoes.

Mary bars, belong on every funky bike IMO, $50?

I'd ride mine stock though,a nd see how long I'd last. Different pedals though, I like my skin.

I'll leave the tires on the bike. I think that the Exi's will fit well into what I'm going to be using the bike for. I'll be throwing some cheap Hayes hydro's on it, cause I have some laying around. I might try a set of Mallets on it. Clip in capability with platform stability for messing around on.

I'll have a prototype frameset in the shop next week. I'll be posting pics and a ride report then.

I'm thinkin' DMR Mech Hanger Chain Tugs, Sram X7 Derailer setup, NSB Hanger Banger, my Odyssey Twisted Clik pedal, and 661 clipless shoes. Yeah, that should be good for the 35 miles round trip to work.

talked to a shop owner today who tried calling his
rep, but got another, who basically confirmed March
is still on for release dates, but that nothing (as of yet)
is set in stone concerning Monocog 29er - also, price
they quoted me was $550.00, not $450-475... Kind of a
bummer, in that respect, another hundred bucks I wasn't
expecting, but my interest/curiosity is there. Question
remains, will the bottom line be acceptable on both sides
of the equation? Riders, AND Redline's???

another 29er single speed??? Hmmm. The option of mixing & matching parts with the Rig appeals. could turn one into a hardman commuter SS. Yeah. Yep. I guess I do need it. At that price, there's no reason not to own at least one.

Redline here... I'm curious who the shop guy was you talked to. As for a timeframe of delivery, we're still shooting for March. Today's communication has it towards the end of March but I'm pressing daily. As for MSRP? $469.99 and that's straight from the horses mouth... Shops can charge what they want but we will advertise a $469.99 MSRP.

Shop guy I talked to was Roger @ Broadway bikes in
Baltimore, MD - thing is, I get the impression I'm kind of
a "mark" when it comes to retailers, which is why I almost
would rather deal with a company direct, even ordering
sight unseen in some cases, because at least then you're not
at the mercy of a middle man (whose circumstances, urban
neighborhood bordered by gentrified yuppie types that WILL pay
extra for "status" models; Isn't too hard to imagine a nice
mark up there to pay the rent as well as visit strip club across
the street). Don't wanna give the wrong impression at all,
because I was treated very nicely - it's just that the couple of
shops I'm a little familiar with are usually staffed by guys who's
fit body shapes are good indications that they do alot of riding
themselves- instead of hobnobbing with "industry" names
at the trade shows (no offense is intended at all; believe me,
this is a phenomenon that's quite noticeable in the entire
"action sports" world). Basically, I live in the boondcks, & drove
an hour into the city because it seemed a legit route to follow,
ie., Authorized Dealer on the door. Can't help but wonder, though,
will a possibility exist to somehow order online @Redline's MSRP????

Shouldn't be a big deal to find some dealer in your area to get you a bike at MSRP. They really may not have know, this is a really new model. They only real way that I know something about them is in talking directly to the rep about this specifically. The MSRP, for instance, was not included on the 2006 model pricelist. It could have been a simple mistake, or an educated guess. "Hmm, same as 26 inch version but with bigger wheels. Must be a bit more." I'm not saying that this is what happened, just that it could be a possibility.

Bikes tend to have 99% identical parts between sizes. Frames differ. Sometimes stems.
On a frame, many parts are standard, BB, dropouts, chainstays, etc. Between the S and XL are 2 inches of toptube, 6 inches of seattube, some extra downtube, but that's it.
