First off, I'd like to thank everyone for the awsome ride on saturday! Even though I endoed & lost my rear brakes before we even got to the Foresthill Bridge, and then every muscle in my legs were cramping up on the return trip, this was one of my favorite rides I've been on. I've got a bunch of pictures to go through, and some didn't come out as sharp as I'd hoped (i'm not used to the camera I had for sports stuff), I did get some great shots. I don't know who most of the riders were just by looking at the pictures, but if you want a hi-res copy send me an email saying which picture you want & I'll email it to ya.

I've been deflowered...An Auburn virgin no more. The words Foresthill and Confluence and Maria's are no longer mystery, but a clear picture in my mind (o.k.... maybe Confluence is a blur ) Thank you John for getting me to and from Dan's ( I meant to leave the other half of the six pack in your truck as a physical show of gratitude. You can imagine my surprise when I got home and I had half a 6er in my bag. Fear not, I took care of them for you. I owe you a few.) Thanks Dan for getting me to and from my favorite mountain bike ride so far this year. I ran into a couple of folks I hadn't seen in a while (Cap'n and Pete) and the goat burrito lives in my memory even now (I'll go with carne asada next time).

Hey!!! I live in Tahoe and the snow level is slowly creeping its way downward so I am going to have to drive down to the foothills to ride. I have heard that there is a great trail out of Auburn. Maybe this is the one that you profiled in pics. If anyone could provide some basic directions from Auburn that would be greatly apprectiated.

That was my first ride with any of the MTBR folks and it was really great. D@mn that was a big group. Seemed like everyone was pretty strong as well. Luckily y'all take good long breaks so I got a chance to catch up ;^> Speaking of which, one of the things I liked about this group was how supportive it was. Towards the end I was bonking and lagging pretty far behind the main group, but I never felt any pressure to step it up.

I met some really great folks. I hope to run into you all again. Of course, I got a bunch of real names, but now I realize I don't know what screen names to connect them with. Anyway, for those whom I met, I'm Jeff, the guy from up near Truckee (the school teacher at the ski academy). I was riding a red Heckler, white helmet, and I have a goatee (sp) and was usually one of the last 3 or 4 people to show up at each stop towards the end of the day.

Man, I was whooped at the end of that ride. Cramp city from the return on the connector trail til the end. I was so shot that I was f'ing up left and right down the Culvert Trail and the Confluence. I landed several jumps and drops every which way but straight. I hit that run quite often, and I should probably have just chilled out on it yesterday.

My God, you ss'ers are freaks of nature! What are they putting in your cerial?

Sorry I missed you all at the Taco place. I was not paying close enough attention to the directions and I did not find it.

Anyway, thanks to all who put that together, and especially Char (hope I got that name right) for meeting up us with with water and Gatorade. Also thanks to those who showed up early to set up the shuttle.

Hey, I live near Truckee and I go down there a lot over the winter to ride. I'd be happy to go down with you sometime. PM me if you are interested. There is also some great stuff around Nevada City.

For a good map online, try www.mtbsingletrack.com it's a great resource for riding in the Auburn and Nevada City area. Great maps and directions.

First off I must say that this was my virgin MTBR ride and I could have no asked for a better group to ride with. Although I wasn't very talkative and kinda shy, that doesn't mean I had a great ride. It was the biggest and longest mtn bike ride I have ever been on. It totally killed my legs though as we were finishing up down the forest hill divide trail. I just wanted to have a search and rescue team come out and find me to take me back to the car. But I hung through it and survived somehow. This ride just pushed me that much harder to stay up with the group and for the most part I did so. This group ride was much different that riding with my buddies back home and I sure did feal it. I just want to say thanx to EVERYONE for making my day sooooo much fun. Ok, enough about that lets show some pictures. If you want any hi-res pics just let me know and I'll send them to ya. Thanks everyone, especially Dan for driving up, and the sweepers for keeping me company. I had a great time, and I am pleased to see that more than one other rider felt pretty well toasted when it was over. Although this was my first official MTBR ride, I have met a few folks through MTBR, and I am continually amazed at how cool, interesting, funny and FAST you all are. (30 miles on a Single Speed - - - in Sandals !? )

Meeting a number of cool new people, enjoying some beautiful wilderness area, and traveling at warp speed through our killer California paradise, is a great way to spend a Saturday. This group is grand. With superstars like Boulder Boy, Johnny Fire Cracker, Francis Ford Coppola, the Zane-inator, Ogre, DANger, and yes, Joseph it is easy to be caught up in all the fanfare.

Thanks for all of the photos.

On reflection, this was the largest, longest, and best mountain bike ride I have ever been on. Awesome trails, awesome conditions, awesome ridebuddies. I have BigBoulder, Cher, and the rest of the trail leadership to thank for it, so, thank you for making it happen.

The after party at Big Boulder ranch was superb, where I was initiated into Bike Sumo, treated to a post-ride cigar, drank too much, carried on late into the night, and slept very well. There is love and hospitality at BB ranch!

And for all who commented on my BMX pedals before, during, and after the ride (I think I heard over 10 comments ) I have finally decided to trade in my beloved magnesium BMX pedals for some spd clipless. 30 miles on flat pedals made me a believer.

From the comments it looks like this ride was truly "breakthrough": lots of first-time MTBR ride riders, lots of "longest ride they've ever done" riders" (including me), and to think it all went down "post-season" - man those trails could NOT have been better!

Yes, that was an awesome ride. It was so great starting from town, and after driving up to FDLT several times previous, it was a treat to ride over that bridge.

My top five, in no particular order...

- Great road trip buddies. Thanks for driving, Dan'ger, you are a champ. And sorry for showing up at your house so early (although your email did not reach me until almost 10 PM Friday night...). Lutarious, Velocipus, JRM...great riding up with you guys!

- Connector Trail...drool...that trail is just to freakin sweet. Even if you drive up to FDLT, that trail is worth the out-and-back at the end of the Foresthill loop. Big props to FATRAC and all the other believers for that bit of sweetness.

- Confluence...shiver...probably my favorite section of the entire ride, although it was tough riding it at the very end of the day. I got away with several mistakes there.

- Ride leadership: I admit, I was pessimistic about that group staying together, but every time I got to a junction, sure enough there was at least one person there pointing the way. I didn't catch everyone's name, but thanks again.

- Imjps for leading the F**kin' A ride. It was a blast finishing Foresthill in reverse, thanks for suggesting it. And thanks for the geek stats!

Hey all, it's monday morning and I ain't gonna work. Too much fun weekend thoughts right now. Might as well write them down.

Pre-ride:
So bigboulder comes to Skeggs and we ride, ride, ride. Over the past few years, I've seen bigboulder a few times in gatherings but we never really rode together or talked in depth. Well, this guy can ride and he's a damm nice guy. So he invites me over to Auburn and I am in.

Saturday:
So Derek and I arrive at the Waterwheel and there's about 30 people over there. Incredible! My old co-worker Capm is even there with a ton of beer from his family brewery, Sac Brew. Jed and Suizy cruise by to say hi but not ride... roadies. Kyle is late as usual and Andy crashes into the parking lot curb and hurts his knee, elbow and ankle.

I turn my camera on and the battery is ded... not even one shot. At this point, camera duties are now up to JorgeMonkey, Joe-da-Trog and others. Kind of bummed but I know it'll be a lot less work.

Conditions: Well they didn't suck. Trail was perfect, Temps were perfect, the the fall colors were well ahh perfect. I'm just at a loss for words. The Auburn trails were an orgy of packed clay trails, imbedded rocks, roller coaster stretches, bridges, creek crossings, epic downhills with river and canyon views.

A group of 30 can't ride together right? Well this one can The A and the B group were having so much fun that we stuck it out together. It was a big ass house party on the trail. Rychelle shinn'ed some Rocks, Dan'ger endoed a few other riders got nicked. A lot of folks rode beyond their best!

Char aka Fiona was waiting at the halfway point with Gatorade and water. Char is an angel. Roger aka Roger__ rolls up with singlespeed buddies. 60 mile ride is easy when you don't have gears to bother with right Roger?


Maria's Tacos:
That place is goooood and it's cheap. At least 20 folks from the ride are still here. Amazing. We have a great time. Period. The stories are flowing as beer nourished the lactic legs.

Bigboulder's house:
Steve's got kind of a ranch. 5 cars make their way into the woods and end up at Steve's house. We set our sleeping bags aka 'crash landing' spots down and proceed to drink. We can't waste a minute since it's already 6pm.

Through the night, more stragglers roll in. Our favorite is Ben aka OBTAINER aka K-Max's brother in law. Ben can talk one million words per hour and is straight-up the funniest guy in Norcal!!!!!!!!

Bigboulder's hottie roomate rolls in and wants to party. She's got 3 kids 5-7 and they want to join too. Her roomate's girlfriend arrives and joins too. They bring 20 lbs of fresh trout and make Bigboulder clean it so they can eat and party!

So the next 6 hours are a blur of drinking cases of beer and putting a dent on a box of HARDDDD liquor. Fresh baked Fiona cookies keep coming out of the oven and broiled trout is floating around. We then proceed into X-box playing with the kids, a halloween fashion show, tobacco smoking, then bike sumo.

Bike sumo is a treat. We do this for an hour as the kids join in and referee the competition. During the practice round, Jilm taps me and I fly into the cement. I look at my knee and it's a bleeder. Medic!! The eventual winners are Ogre for the '****' socks and Madzane for the stem topcap beer cap holder.

Past midnight, time to conk out. Day two coming...

Sunday:

So we're all sleeping on Bigboulder's floor. The smart ones have air matresses and pads. Fools like me and Derek have to turn over every half hour. We all get up and just stare at the breakfast table and sip something. We make our way to the South Yuba trail and get some calls from some slackers and no-shows.

Riding today are Bigboulder, Ogre, Joseph, Derek and me. Char is at the trailhead to catch up on some sleep. The ride starts out with a big climb. My legs need a full hour to de-toxify and get started. Da pain, da pain said Tattoo.

Anyway, the singletrack descent comes and it is the lushest forest I've ever seen in the Sierras. It's a pristine singletrack coated with a layer of pine needles. The views were epic as we snaked through the forest.

What followed was the best singletrack of the weekend. There were two windy pieces of trail that challenged but not intimidate the rider. Speeds were high through the logs and rocks as Bigboulder represented for the Auburn SS nation.

We then proceeded on to South Yuba trail. South Yuba is a rocky, up and down trail with a cliff on the left side. It's a little intimidating but once you flow up and down and left and right. The confidence and fun factor just goes off the scale. Another big flowy descent and we're back in the parking lot. 22 miles. The perfect ride to end a a great weekend.

Time for more beer! We go to the pizza place, load up and go home.

Joseph has a ton of pics from both days. But like I said before the ride, the pics don't capture the moment. This was the perfect fall weekend ride where good folks happened to come together and everything turned out perfect. Old friends, new friends, just hanging out and having the time our our lives!!

After leaving the driver shuttles down at the confluence we pulled into the parking lot expecting to see a few people… By 10am there were 30 + folks ready to go. Everyone seemed anxious to get going and I was starting to wonder how we were going to herd that many riders (many had never been to Auburn before) on our planned route. Big props to Dennis, Ben, Jim, Johnny, Andy F, John and others for helping to keep everyone together. Although there was a little communication breakdown at the B group turnoff, I think that is was a good thing for everyone to have completed the A ride. There was such a positive vibe going all day (and all weekend). There were a couple of flats and small mechanicals (broken chains, brakes etc) but every rider that started the ride was there at the end. This was definitely the most successful large group ride I have ever been involved with.

Extra Special Thanx (EST) to Char in her starring roll as Fiona The Trail Princess. Super EST’s for the Ogre cookies on Saturday night…Mmmm Ogre Cookies and Trout!

Five survivors made it to the South Yuba River on Sunday morning with sore legs and hangovers. This ride is a lot like the Auburn ride we did on Saturday….It’s a lot of fun…only more lush, scenic, remote (we encountered only 2 other riders), technically and physically challenging. We were all tired…after all we had put in just over 50 miles of tough riding in two days (I on the SS) but, still there was that sense of elation and feeling of accomplishment that brought smiles and good cheer. That and the beer.

Well I'd much rather lug my D70 around on rides than my D1h. The D1h is 3 lbs with NO lens on it The hardest part though was tryin to catch up.... which is probably why I endoed hehe. My wife got a little mad at me since I was gone riding all day, then came home and started workin on pics almost immediatly (sp?) Guess I should be nicer so she'll keep lettin me ride!

from the Auburn ride, thanks to all the Auburn locals for showing us some of the finest single track Iv'e ridden, That was an e-ticket ride that I would love to do again.
Thanks to Char 4 the support, It was nice to meet the ones I see post on regular basis but never had the opportunity to ride with, Knee hurts a little but it's not stopping me,
I hope to see everyone soon for the next gathering.

Ha! Right on Ben, cool to see you post. I had a grand time riding with you. Your singing and jabber was a riot on the climbs...to the point of compromising my O2 efficiency at times I think. You were cracking me up at Steve's too. And you can ride. This forum's in trouble if you start hanging out here.

Yeah, it was nice seeing you all out there. I was taken aback by how many people were at the top of the climb on FHDT! Very cool, nice job to Big Boulder for putting a great together for you all.

We had a great ride ourselves, we got in about 65 miles and 9200 feet of climbing...oh and three dang flats, all me!

Like wise friend. I always look forward to a ride when in it involves Da man and his Bust it. Our S. Yuba ride was so sweeeeeet! I am still on a high form that. Good times were definitely had this past weekend.

This board is so strong and the momentum seem to be picking up, it will be interesting to see how things play out in the next six months as far as rides and opening of a new session in 06.

It has been a great season. Thanks for allowing me ride with you all these years and pushing my skill level up. This year was huge with our road trip to Fruita, meeting a lot of great people from the boards, and taking in some of the best trails/conditions this year.

The bar has been raised. It's gonna be tough to beat, but I hope next year is going to be bigger and better.

Big props to Steve for posting all the information to make this weekend go so great. I think he may have been a little shock to see just how many riders did show up based on a conversation that started between two people a few weeks ago. The power of BB does work.

I took over 100 pics in 2 days. The only pictures that came are the pix I have posted. I try to preserve the moment as I go. Not wait for it to happen. FP is our bush man. More power to him.
