Need advice on Melbourne - 2-3 days to ride, need to rent a bike, etc.

I’ll be in Melbourne for work from March 8-10, and would like to extend my stay to do some mountain biking in the vicinity (within a half-day drive or so) for a few days. I would need to rent a bike, and possibly hire a guide. I’m mainly interested in all-mountain/enduro-style riding - technical singletrack, climbing, and an emphasis on fun, technical descents (but not requiring a DH bike). The dates I have available are either March 6-8 (Sun/Mon/half-day on Tues), or March 11-12 (Fri/Sat). I’d have a rental car, but not sure if I’ll be able to fit a bike in it. I wouldn't necessarily need to return to Melbourne each night.

Any suggestions for places to rent a bike, and maybe hire a guide, would be most appreciated. Also any must-do areas to ride. I did already find one outfit (Blue Dirt), which I emailed a similar question to.

Thanks,
Sean

Hi Sean
Try posting on Rotorburn and I'm sure you'll get some more responses. Saying that You Yangs is the best place near Melbourne. We have trails closer to town but these are more techy xc but still ok. If your not driving you can take the train to little river (as in dodgy band) train station and it's a flat 10km ish ride to the You yangs. As for bike hire I'm no help. Sorry. Have an awesome trip. If willing to drive half a day you MUST go to Mt Buller (3hrs drive from melb). Good rental options on the mountain, plenty of trails of all types and difficulty to keep you busy for days. I usually drive up early for a big ride day (village trails then Epic trail), beers and pub dinner, easier ride day next morning (Delatite or Klingsporn and shuttle back up), drive home in the afternoon. Mt Buller Bike Festival is the weekend 12-14 March (Labour Day long weekend), could be cool to join in!
