New XL raw RIP 9 Build

Just finished building a new Niner RIP 9. I took the parts off of my Jet 9 and added a FOX F29 120mm and I also got the 15GQR Chris King conversion kit. Total weight came out to 27.14 lbs.

There is foot of snow on the ground at the moment so I don't know when I will get a chance to drive it, but I am curious to see how it compares to my Jet9. The frame weight of the RIP is almost 8 pound, so it is almost two pounds heavier than the jet.

Looks beautiful.

I'm a little confused though, how your build is lighter by about a 1lb than my wife's build...

when your:
frame
hubs
brakes
chain
grips
handlebar

are all heavier than hers?

Either your scale is off or ours is.

Regardless, most big guys set their bikes up really awkward. Congrats on a fetching build on a great ride.

Boy, oh boy the more I see these new RIP9s the more I'm convinced I need one Really nice looking, like the RAW, look s sharp. Now try to explain to me how a foot of snow is keeping you from taking this beauty outside and peddaling it around I know if I had a sweet bike like that sitting there all built up it'd take a Tornado coming or Blizzard or some such to stop me riding it

Yeah, really...what's a little bit of snow when you got a nice, new RIP9 sitting in your living room? Just give some neighborhood kid a couple of bucks to shovel a path down the street for you.

Sweet build. Congrats on the weight!

My XL RIP frame in raw is 1.49 lbs more than the XL JET 9 of old. I've pretty much got the same build as you except I've got the heavier XT cranks, Blunts instead of Arches and my tuned boat anchor Avid mechanical disc brakes. Mine weighs in at 27.75 lbs with 520g race tires and it weighs in at 28.8 lbs with my all around favorite Fire XC Pros. I know with my Aspen tires and Xpedo Ti/Ti pedals, I could get down to 27.41. I could shave a bit more with stem and my seat post collar, but I'll save all of that for my JET when it arrives. Anywhere in the 27-29 lbs. range is sweet for an XL RIP!!!!

Once your snow melts - if you are like me and have spent time on the JET- you are going to absolutely love the RIP. I'm pretty much amazed by it after riding it for 2 weeks. That amazement will continue for a bit more until the "newness factor" wears off. When your snow melts, just point your RIP at anything and have at it.

And make sure you check clearance with your XTR big ring and the yoke. I had to drop down to a 38T (all I had on hand) big ring to keep the chain from getting wedged in between the big ring and yoke. See thread here about the issue. It may only be an issue with XT cranks and not the XTR.

Thanks for the kind words, it should be a fun bike. I had a mistype in my first post it should have said 27 pounds 14 ounces not 27.14 pounds. That might be the confusion.

That said, the scale isn't off because I weighed it my LBS and it was essentially the same. If I ran my candy 4 ti's it would be even lighter than it is now with Candy Sl's. Not sure why your wife's bike is heavier, but here are the specs.

I am running the following:

135 g carbon sella saddle
XO Grip shifts
Stans arches with King hubs
Racing Ralphs one evo and one snake skin (tubeless)
XTR front Der
Sram xo rear Der
XTR Cranks
Juicy Ultimates
Ti bolt kit
Easton Carbon bars, carbon seatpost and EA 90 stem
XTR Cassette and chain
Ti Skewers

Unless your wife is 6'4", I am willing to bet my frame is heavier than hers; it weighed in at 7 pounds 15 ounces for the XL. I assume she is running a med or small frame?

Brett from Niner has an XL RIP that is similar in build and in weight, so this is a legit weight for this build.

I test rode that very frame and finish at the Brown County Breakdown. It handled pretty light vs. what you indicate for the frame weight.

Seeing your post, I went to the King website and noticed that you can convert a ISO Disc or 20 mm to the 15mm standard. Did you do the conversion yourself? How hard was it? How much did the kit cost?

Thanks!

You can thank Bruce above for the idea for the 15QR conversion on my king hub. Two weeks ago he told me about this kit and I got it for $65. It takes about 5 minutes to do and it is simple. All you need to do loosen and tighten one 5mm bolt and that is basically it. Really slick!! Take the old QR out and put the 15QR in and you are done.

Thanks Bruce. I saw your build and it looked very close to what I had in mind from all the parts I pirated from from my jet.

I heard about the issue with the chain getting stuck between the big ring and yoke. I guess I will find out soon enough if XTR also has this problem.

Compared to my jet, this frame is a lot more substantial. I suspect it will descend with the best of em. However, I am curious to see if it climbs like a pig. Not to mention I am curious to see if the front end is going to get light on steep technical climbs.

I have a XL Jet on order as well, so I am curious to see how the new jet compares to the old Jet and also how it will compare to the RIP.

I have all my weight weenie XC parts on the bike at the moment and I am kind of tempted to throw some bigger rubber on this bike to make it more of an all mountain bike.

I live in Evergreen, Colorado . Hopefully it will warm up next week so I can do some rides in the front range of Denver. I got a great deal on the King Kit from my LBS!

Well, it's ski season in your part of the world. What are you doing talking about mountain biking?

Mash on the pedals with all you've got in the middle ring out in front of your house. You'll know within 100 yards if you have the problem or not.

It does not climb like a pig. Actually climbs great (which surprised me even after having read that it climbed great by everybody else). You've got to ride it to believe it, I guess.

On my local trails where I have ridden tons of miles on the JET/Dos/Sugar/Monkey the RIP has really surprised me on the climbs. Because of that, I almost raced it today in a duathlon, but reached for the Dos Niner when I was told they took a leaf blower to the trails so the singletrack was buff dirt. No need for my Fire XC Pros on the RIP since the leaves were removed, so the Dos with Aspens got the nod. Desending on this bike is wicked (in a good way) with the tapered steerer Fox fork and the burly RIP frame. I may have to go back to 180mm rotors to keep me out of trouble.scuba diving egypt

If the RIP is any indication of what that tubing can do for our upcoming JETs, I think we will be tickled pink in the 3" travel platform. I've only run the RIP with Karma 1.9's and now the Fire XC Pros (about as burly and aggressive as I need for my uses). I think the Ardent would be a great tire as well for the RIP as they are a step down in aggression from the Fire XC Pros and don't have as much rolling resitance. But the suspension really keeps whatever you run glued to the ground. I may even pull the Ralphs out once fall/winter is over and give them a shot on the RIP.

Here's to some quickly melting snow so you can get out on your sweet looking RIP.

Just to be clear, Kings can convert QR-15mm or 20mm to 15mm, but not QR-20mm.

@ BruceBrown.

Believe it, on the RIP, going with 180 to 185mm rotors. The bike is so smooth on the downs, you really have to pay attention to your entry speed into corners. It is deceptive, so it pays to be aware of it. The RIP will definitely allow you to go alot faster before you realize your last known configuration went to sh*t, and that's where larger rotors, combined with the long footprint of the 29er tire will save your bacon.

Very nice. I just finished mine a week ago. I love this bike. The dropouts for the maxle lite are a little pricey but worth the investment.
