Delirium has got to make some of the best beer out there. Which makes me think... I should take off from school early and hit up happy hour at Yard House... half-price Tremens on tap!

The brewery is called Huyghe and is in Melle, Belgium. I used to live near the brewery and here are some pics. They also contract brew tons of other beers you would know if you drink Belgiums on a regular basis.

Delerium Tremens? A case of life imitating art, or art imitating life? Either way, a wuite the delicious inebriant!

question. i like the Tremens a lot. i don't consider myself a cheapskate - but over this way, the stuff is pricey. i keep some because of it's uniqueness but at the same time, for justifiably less, Duvel serves as a decent sub (similar in style imho) in my household.

am i alone in thought process here? or am i seriously missing something that demonstrates these twice as good / worth twice the price?

I always thought they were about the same price. Around 9-10 buck for a 750

a Duvel .750 is $7 or $8 at Trader Joe's. but put it like this, i recently bought a case of 24 Tremens (shorties) and it set me back $98 after tax. Duvel, last i bought 24 shorties set me back about $57 as i recall. i didn't pick up any this year and from what i recall through my source the cost is up slightly and would now be somewhere around $65ish.

Great brew, but Cyclotic where are you getting 24 pack of Duvel?

not sure in what sense you mean that - are you asking where in the sense of what place sells to me by the case or in the sense of you didn't realize that they arrive generally to merchants by the 24 btle case? i'm guessing you mean it in the sense of rarely seeing the actual boxing for higher-end brew because of price - they are generally offered in single bottle format or by 6er?

not home now but will insert a picture of a few of the full cases i snagged.

330 ML. come 6/4 packs per case, or, 24 bottles to a case. The 750s come 12 to a case--like wine.

exactly, Evil. i said 6er but in actuality, after considering it, most of the decent to higher-end stuff i happened to pick up full cases of the last few years are divided in (6) 4-packs.

not to get too sidetracked - my real concern/curiosity was how others felt. to me, Duvel is somewhat similar in weight/style to Tremens - i know they differ but as far as "purpose" i find them similar to a degree.

that said, and i don't know - cause it sounds like the price disparity might be more a local issue(?) but i was wondering if anyone else sees it as the same dilemma and whether or not the $30 difference per case is enough to view as discouraging (from Tremens) / encouraging (towards Duvel)?

I don't typically buy cases of one beer, however, if I liked both those beers and did buy cases, yes, I would opt for the cheaper one.

Ahhh Delirium Tremens.... I spent some time in Belgium & Brugge ('Bruges') tasting more beers than I care to recall, and DT was a standout (along with the Westmalle Dubbel among others). I remember buying as much DT as we could fit into our backpacks before flying back to London. So cheap in Belgium too (relative to the rest of the world). Sooo exxy in Australia. No fair

Thanks for posting those pics BTW themanmonkey. I've never seen so many pink elephants in the one spot.

That's quite a disparity in price. Over here (Belgium) I'd say most of the beer I drink runs about the same price. I usually pick up 2 cases at a time and pay about $100 for both after conversion. So I don't think you are paying too much for Duvel (although I don't drink it, I consider it to be too clean so I am unsure of the price) but the mark up on the Delerium is pretty high.

Ive never seen it sold around here in cases, everything is a 6pk. I wish they offered cases.

just to be clear, as Evil Emery stated, both Duvel and Tremens are packaged in '4pks' cartoon (6 cartons to a case). i made the mistake of saying 6er... just because i'm used to referring to the inlay trays as "6ers".

to be quite honest, i opened my mouth. the shop i get mine from doesn't put brews out on the floor by the case. i talked to the merchant - i believe he places his normal weekly order(s) and adds an additional case (i've selected) to the normal take.

it's a win / win for both he and i. most distributors increase their wholesale discounts to merchants based on more product taken - thus if anything, my additional cases may help drive down his wholesale costs - and even if it doesn't contribute to that - he's still unloading a case on the spot even if at a lower mark-up than individual bottle sales would yield.

now for my consulting fees. make the check payable to: ME!

lol.

Ok i'm considering a bottle of this, but its $12 for ONE bottle. So someone please tell me what it tastes like or compares to. If its similar to Chimay or Duvel or whatever. Is it light, dark, fruity, crisp....

To me it tastes like amped up Duvel. i think Mahoney hit the nail on the head - "CLEAN" when describing Duvel:

i personally think the two, Duvel and Delerium Tremens are comparable (i refer to em as "champagne" brews). i was also shocked to see .750 Tremens on a shelf for about the same price as Duvel .750's Friday afternoon! Oh and they are very good if you like the style, but no way i'd (personally) pay $12 for a bottle of this.
